hamilton: Hamilton Councillor out of line on MacMaster - 04/30/09 01:10 PM
Councillor Bob Bratina blew it recently when he stated, with disgust, that the university is "an unwieldy leviathan ruining everything around it," and a "huge nuisance".
MacMaster University-with more than 19,000 full-time undergraduate students, almost 3,000 grad students and more than 7,500 employees--has a huge positive impact on our city with its ability to attract bright minds, research money and prestige.
Bratina made the comment at a council meeting that concerned a proposed zoining change so a developer can build a 10-storey apartment building to house 600 students between Rifle Range and Ewen roads, south of Main St. West.

hamilton: Timing, price, and location: it's sold! - 02/03/09 11:15 PM
I like to deal in fair play to my competitors, especially when they are activerain peers also.
So here's a blog post from a FSBO company in Durham County (that's in Canada's mid-north). I can find little fault with what they say about selling privately, other than that they don't substantiate their testimonial. In fact, it verifies what I have been saying all along: That if the timing, price and location are right, you WILL sell your house quickly, privately or otherwise.
Unfortunately, a lot of Sellers are missing one of those elements.

hamilton: House price indexes not so accurate - 01/22/09 10:02 AM
Statistics can be made to state whatever you want them too, as long as you have info to back you up.
For example, average house prices reported in Canada are derived from the MLS(R) system. It is not wholly accurate as private sales and new home sales are not included. But economists and the CMHC use the results as a major economic indicator.
Well, some other financial institutions are questioning its validity as the prime method of determining whether we're in a bad economy or not. The TD Bank Financial Group was first with their  TD Home Price Index. It takes into … (1 comments)

hamilton: Farmers' Market & Library plans unveiled - 01/12/09 09:17 PM
The city of Hamilton unveiled plans Saturday, Jan 10/09  for the new Farmers' Market and Central Library.

According to attendees, the architect, David Premi, a Hamilton native, has done an amazing job of understanding the current problems in the market and has come up with a vision for the downtown that is inspiring.

The $7 million project will start this March and is due for completion by 2010. Councillor Bob Bratina said the new market will have a wow factor and "help recapture the fun that was there 40 or 50 years ago."

Jennifer Gautrey, chair of the … (0 comments)

hamilton: Metrolinx, metro-what? - 12/10/08 03:20 PM
I was suprised to find out that many consumers haven't heard about the 84-page Metrolinx plan that commits to building three rapid transit lines in Hamilton with 25 years, two of them by 2023.
If you don't know much about it, here's the scoop:
One line will run east-west from McMaster University to Centtennial Parkway--what Hamilton has been calling the B-line. A north-south line is planned to run along James St. up the Mountain.
The east-west line is a top 15 priority among the 40 projects Metrolinx wants completed in the next 15 years.
"We could have it running the next eight years," … (0 comments)

hamilton: Convincing someone to move to Hamilton? - 12/10/08 02:47 PM
I found this article that probably more than anything else I've read lately, promotes Hamilton as not only a great place to live, but also a great place to invest in your future.
If you're trying to convince someone (including yourself) that there is a bright future for Hamilton, send them this link:

hamilton: Smile, You're on City Camera - 10/27/08 04:07 PM
The City of Hamilton just entered into a $115,000 contract with ilookabout that will involve four vehicles, mounted with digital cameras to snap 180 degree panoramic photographs every five metres down each street in the entire city.
Using ilookabout's new software "Streetscape", city staff will be able to call up pictures of anything, anytime. Hamilton has had access to stills since 2004 but now instead of three angles, there will be five, according to gord McGuire, manager of surveys and tech services.
Gord says looking at detailed stills of a street helps staff avoid unnecessary and sometimes lengthy trips to a … (1 comments)
