Early in 1923, the present Toluca Lake area was a flourishing ranch, famous for its lush crops of peaches, apples and walnuts and known as the Forman Toluca Ranch. Its groves have long since given way to beautiful streets of fine homes and estates. The community was established through efforts of a syndicate of Hollywood financiers and developers who named the developmemt Toluca Lake Park. The area also is the setting for two picturesque lakes, the original one on the North Hollywood side and the other in Burbank. The area also was the home of the first international House of Pancakes, which opened in 1958. The original boundaries of Toluca Lake were Cahuenga Blvd, Clybourn Ave, Camarillo Strreet and the Los Angeles River. Old-timers zealously stick to these boundaries and, in 1939, there were so listed in the incorporation papers of the Toluca Lake Civic Association. Since then, other adjacent streets and areas have been included and are now associated with the Toluca Lake area. Why recessed lighting?

When to use recessed lighting?

The reason for that is because most of the recessed lights today can swivel to give direct or indirect lighting. How to install recessed lighting?

Avoid installing recessed light fixtures too close to each other, or in rows in the center of a room. We recommend that you space the fixtures a minimum of 2 feet apart. You should always dispose the fixtures as to light the objects you want. (Ex: Light a painting on the wall, a table...) There are 2 main types of recessed lighting positioning: general or task lighting. The first aims at giving a general illumination to an area with a comfortable level of brightness, enabling one to see and walk about safely. The second permits you to brighten specific areas or objects. The best lighting results are achieved through a combination of both techniques. For example, when lighting a bedroom, you will want to create an overall atmosphere of quiet relaxation, while providing some bright spots for reading and other activities.

Applying stucco is a great way to enhance the beauty of any home, and the application of this great material is well within the skills of most homeowners. Before the stucco can be applied, consider what type of surface you will be covering. The application methods will vary depending on whether the existing wall is wood, block, brick, concrete or some other type of material.

Stucco a Masonry or Concrete Wall

To apply stucco to an existing brick, block or concrete wall, first brush a concrete bonding agent onto the wall, then allow it to dry completely. After the bonding agent has been allowed to dry, the stucco can be applied directly to the wall. The application of the stucco should begin with a scratch coat, a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of mortar which is applied directly to the structure and allowed to slightly harden. After the mortar has hardened slightly, it should be scratched to a depth of 1/8" and allowed to harden for between 36 and 48 hours, periodically misting the surface to keep it moist.

After the curing period has passed, a finish coat can be applied. The finish coat will be between 1/8" to 1/4" thick. The finish coat can be finished to the desired texture, then allowed to cure for another 36 to 48 hours, with periodic misting to keep the surface moist.

Stucco a Wood Wall

The procedure for applying stucco to a wooden surface is somewhat different, beginning with nailing 15-pound roofing felt over the structure. After the roofing felt has been installed, it should be covered with 17-gauge metal netting. This netting can be purchased in 150 foot rolls at many home improvement stores. The metal netting is applied by attaching it to the structure using galvanized roofing nails. After the netting is in place the excess can be trimmed using tin snips.

The next step is to apply a scratch coat by using a trowel to spread a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of mortar, carefully forcing this mortar into the netting. This will cause the mortar to exude through the netting, which will in turn help to "key" the coating into place.

It is important to complete one wall before starting another one, and to allow the scratch coat to harden slightly before proceeding. After the mortar has slightly hardened, the next step is to use a plasterer's rake or homemade equivalent to scratch the entire mortar coat to a depth of at least 1/8".

When working with mortar, a slow and careful curing will work best and provide the greatest strength. The scratch coat should be allowed to cure for at least 36 to 48 hours before proceeding. During the curing process the wall should be misted periodically to keep the area damp. When the weather is hot and dry, more frequent misting may be required.

After the scratch coat has been allowed to cure, the finish coat can be applied. A flat finishing trowel can be used to apply a finish coat between 1/8" and 1/4" thick to the scratch coat. If a powdered pigment is desired, the pigment should have water added to it and be mixed completely before being added to the stucco. The stucco can then be finished to the desired texture and allowed to cure for several more days.

As the finish coat is curing, it is important to mist it periodically to prevent the surface from drying out. If the stucco is to be painted, wait at least six weeks, and use a paint that is specifically formulated to cover stucco walls.

Drywalling

Drywall is the standard covering for interior walls although for a flawlessly-finished wall it takes a lot of skill from from the installers. To begin with the drywallers need plumb walls. This means that the walls must be straight otherwise over time gravity may cause the sheet to push through the screwheads.

The sheets are delivered to the site in 4 foot widths and lengths of 8, 10 and 12 feet, depending on the height of the room. There is one good side to the panels and so the sheets are shipped in pairs taped together with the good sides facing each other. This prevents scoring and damage to a face which will most likely be painted.

Hanging Drywall

Sizing: The drywalling crews go in after the walls have been insulated and vapor sealed. Framing crews will build the wall frame with the center of each stud 16â€* apart. In this way if the drywall sheet is hug vertically it will cover exactly 3 spaces and be attached to 4 studs. In new home building there is often not to much cutting as the ceilings are usually the height of the drywall sheets or, even placed horizontally, there would be nothing taken off as 2 sheets would equal 8 feet, or the height of normally ceiling. For living rooms and hallways the drywallers will try to use longer pieces so there is not as much filling and taping.

Cutting: The sheets are cut by drawing knife across the paper surface with a long straight-edge, scoring the sheet, and then applying pressure. The sheet will snap along the cut line and, with the gypsum core broken, the paper back is cut along the break.

Hanging: The drywall sheets are usually hung with a 1 1/4â€* screw through the sheet and into the stud but a few crews still prefer nails. The fasteners are snugged just below the surface so they look countersunk. Special attachments for drills called â€œdimplersâ€* are set so that each screw head goes in to certain depth and no further.

Taping

Filling the joints and screw heads with drywall compound finishes off the wall and prepares it for painting. Good tapers and â€œmuddersâ€* can transform the individual sheets and pieces into one long, unblemished wall. The tape is actually thick paper which is soaked in the drywall compound and covers the crack. Before the tape goes on drywall compound is worked into the cracks. A skim of mud goes over the tape and then the wall is left to dry for a day. Sometimes a light sanding is required but professionals do such a skilled job of taping that many put the finish coat on with out it. After this is left to dry then it is sanded and and the wall is ready for paint.

In some instances the entire walls will be plastered. This is called â€œveneer plasteringâ€* and the gypsum board used for this is called blueboard. This type of sheet is covered with a paper specially made to speed up the setting of the plaster coat. The result is a harder more uniform wall but this process requires a skilled hand.

Drywalling is an art which is easy to learn but difficult to perfect. When you put this in terms of time, the mess involved and perfection a trained, professional installer is the best choice.
