In the circle of life... - 07/23/11 02:02 PM
Last night my Mama and I had the privilege of visiting our newest little family member (my nephew) and what a complete joy he is! My brother and his wife are very much in the throws of adoption and the babe came like a gang buster into our world yesterday! We is a sweet little thing weighing just under 7 pounds. We are celebrating and also weeping. My brother's family was handpicked by the mother for the adoption which is very precious because they have wanted a child for many years. My boys are flat out in love with him and … (7 comments)

Cool treats - straight from your own garden! - 07/21/11 12:41 AM
On those hotter than hot days a sweet cool treat is usually in order. While most kids love icees and popsicles - much like my own children - we have found some other cool treats with a healthier background... and they came from our own back yard. At least they will!

This year I planted blueberry bushes and while they aren't producing yet, the Farmer's market is supplying for us. Hopefully next year we'll have established and working plants to offer our sweet treats!Every year we buy a surplus of berries in the summer (while prices our exceptional) and I … (11 comments)

If you built a fair ride.... wordless wednesday - 07/20/11 09:47 PM

A wordless Wednesday that is more funny when you know the back story. I'll keep it short! I think. We took the kidlets to the County Fair this weekend and they had loads of fun riding rides. That was the entire purpose of visiting the fair this year. Kids watched the fairgrounds build up for two weeks prior to the opening and all I heard were endless pleas in the backseat... Sounded like, "When do WE get to go to the fair and ride those rides?"After awhile it just wears a girl down... so we obliged the insistent requests and it … (5 comments)

Five must-do's in the exteme Minnesota heat! - 07/17/11 01:14 PM
FIVE DAY FORECAST The next week in Minnesota is gonna be steamy. It isn't so much the heat that gets you - it's the 80% humidity that makes is feel like an oven outside. The heat index today is 113 degrees (that's how hot it will feel). Waking up this morning it already was around 90 degrees.I spent 15 minutes in my garden plucking beans and weeding the onions. That's about all I could handle. Already sweat was rolling down my cheeks and my skin was crawly with warmth. There are some things in this weather that are CRUCIAL to Minnesotans. … (6 comments)

Have no fear... the ambulance is here! Taking a trip to the Sherburne County Fair - 07/17/11 01:02 AM
Remember those old episodes of M*A*S*H* that you watched everyday as a child? Maybe that only happened in our house. My children have never seen the show, but they certainly figured out the activing for it in a hurry! It took all of two minutes for my son to lay on the stretcher at the fair today. With Grandpa's help he took his turn as 'the patient' on the way to the hospital....YOu wouldn't believe his remarkable recovery when we announced it was time to visit the animals though. With a hop and a skip and a jump off the back they … (6 comments)

Parading through Town!!! - 07/16/11 12:05 AM
The annual Elk River Parade is a well attended event EVERY year. This year was no exception. Despite the downpours earlier in the day and the looming raindrops late into the afternoon it seems that much of Elk River was still sitting on the sidelines waiting for the parade to start at 6:30pm. We were no exception. Umbrellas at our feet and waterproof blanket under our bums we waited ever so patiently for the action to start.Pulling up our piece of grass near the beginning of the parade (as we do every year) we were pleased with the performances given by … (9 comments)

Keeping cool in a heated situation... - 07/15/11 12:19 AM
Minnesota is heating up this weekend. Rising to a mere 97 degrees by Tuesday... Yup. You heard me right. Going from one extreme to another is what our state seems to be about. Thirty degree weather extremes seem to becoming the norm around here... so the question is... how does one stay cool in a heated situation? Here's a few good ol' Minnesotan ideas...10. Go to work. If you are like our family without air conditioning work is a pleasant place to visit! As a Realtor I am pleased with my option of working at home, but in weather that heats the … (7 comments)

Sherburne County Fair starts tomorrow....! - 07/14/11 01:07 AM
The Sherburne County Fair opens it's gate tomorrow July 14th, 11 thru Sunday July 17th, 11. My boys have been watching the trucks pull in all week. Begging to visit the fair every time they see something else set up for entertainment purposes. The lights, the twirly rides, the excitement of the trucks... it's all so much fun! Friday, July 15th 2011 is the scheduled Parade going thru downtown Elk River. The annual event is always great family entertainment especially when one remembers to show up early to grab a good piece of sidewalk along the route. Main Street will be … (2 comments)

Did I hear the "I" word... Did you really say Impeach him? - 07/13/11 10:28 AM
The road we travel is not an easy road by any means. I find in my adulthood that there are times that I wish I could pass off the responsibility and be a child instead. I have often wondered why I was in such a hurry to grow up... and now I'm trying to figure out how to convey that very message to my beloved children who seem to be in a hurry to join the throngs of adulthood (at 5 and 3).
Our world is in such chaos right now that watching the news is like climbing and endless stairway … (11 comments)

The beauty of 10,000 gone and lost forever?.... - 07/10/11 11:13 AM
Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes, but this summer not all lakes in Minnesota are accessible to the public for enjoyment. There are some beautiful places in Minnesota to be explored and the doors have been closed until...Until when? Until the two bullies in the playground find a way to make amends shake hands before going home. The Governor pitted stiffly against the Republicans in our state congress is causing not just a ripple affect but a giant tidal wave of disaster.Daily losing revenue through the lottery and the DNR state park system... and it seems to be going … (4 comments)

Dog Days of Summer! - 07/07/11 09:47 PM
Childhood seems so long ago.... The days where Mama sat under the tree in our backyard and we played circles around her in the sunshine. The days where we all piled into one station wagon (like 8 kids and 2 adults) and headed to the beach. Or the days where we would take a good ol' watermelon and cut it open in the backyard - who doesn't like a good seed fight? It's my turn now. It's my turn to make those memories and bring a little sunshine into my squirrely burly boy's lives. Summer is only "so long" in Minnesota and … (12 comments)

Wordless Wednesday.... a bridge to where? - 07/06/11 09:10 PM

Photo taken at Jay Cooke State Park on the wobbly wobbly bridgeSometimes it is the view from another view that matters the most because you never know what you will see.Beauty can be found anywhere...It just needs to be found.Sometimes from up above and sometimes down below.

Hi Ho... Hi Ho... It's off to the fireworks show... - 07/05/11 09:17 PM
Sometimes you just gotta 'suck it up' and go to the show! Last night was one of those times for me. I have to say though... my normal reasons for hesitating weren't holding me back.
Last year's switchup for the Elk River fireworks was a great and awesome choice (in my opinion). For 30 years we've traveled to Orono Park for a small and modest fireworks display to be followed by a 3-hour drive home from the show. (A mere 5 mile drive.) Moving the display to Lion's Park has made way for a 15 minute walk home! Seriously, moving the … (3 comments)

Minnesota shutdown will affect more than the Governor! - 07/01/11 11:05 AM
One group... thirteen people... four campsites... all sent packing a day early. All of knew that the shutdown was looming, but it was our annual camping event. One day doesn't seem like much, but in the world of vacation and time away from the hustle and bustle it's like an eternity!Yes.... it is easy to blame the Governor. I'm not sitting at his desk, but I do know that there appears to have been several options set before him that he wouldn't work with. So as we have it - Minnesota has gone into shutdown. Businesses are affected, employees are now … (5 comments)
