kids: Wapiti Historical Re-Enactment - 09/17/12 09:40 PM

This weekend (September 21st-23rd, 2012) is the annual Wapiti Historical Re-enactment in Elk River. Maybe perhaps one of the more hidden and unknown events of the area... definitely worth the time to explore.Wapiti Historical Re-Enactment is next weekend, Sept. 22-23, 2012 at 7415 Old Viking Blvd, Nowthen MN, 55330 Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 9-3Paying a mere pittance to enter ($2/person Friday and $3/person on the weekend) we will spend hours watching, learning and participating in the past.I honestly learned more than my children last year, but I can guarantee that this is one event that we will make a point … (9 comments)

kids: A Day in the Park. - 01/21/12 11:57 PM

Late last year I decided that open houses weren't cutting it for me and that I'd rather spend my time supporting neighborhoods, enhancing streets and giving back to the community that raised me. Soooooo... I've started my quest. Today was the first of many planned neighborhood 'events' that I have planned for my area through the spring and summer months. We spent our afternoon at Meadow Park in Elk River today. 20 degree weather and keeping warm with layers and layers of bundled up clothing and hot chocolate. We might have looked like a bunch of dough boys going up the … (13 comments)

kids: It's always good to curl up with a book! - 12/02/11 11:14 AM

December is full of tradition... at least for us! It all starts on Thanksgiving with the Gingerbread Houses and goes all the way through the New Year. This year is no exception. You've seen the houses... and and yesterday we started our advent season (more on that in another post) but today I'm concentrating on the books.Curling up with a good book is always a good idea! And, right now we have a pile of them to work through! We are excited to have  more than 25 Christmas books to read this season. The library is a great resource and … (5 comments)

"Living Social" is offering a great family adventure at half the cost for FIVE more days (from 10/7/11) and you won't want to miss out. Every year they cut a corn maze in their fields and  offer it and a host of other activities for the whole family to enjoy. … (2 comments)

kids: Wordless Wednesday - Just a little buggy - 10/05/11 11:48 PM

A little romp through the woods of the Sherburne Wildlife Refuge brought us many adventurous treats. This little guy was one reason that we so enjoyed our little hiking experiences. The rustling leaves, the birds singing, grasshoppers and dragonflies. The kids had much fun watching, chasing and trying to catch all the bugs they saw. If you live in Sherburne County and you are looking for a great place to spend a little time.... Just head north of Elk River/Zimmerman and stop by the headquarters of the National Wildlife Refuge for a map of their great walking paths … (10 comments)

kids: An apple a day... - 09/23/11 11:45 PM

The old saying says that 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away.' If the saying has any truth we won't be visiting the clinic for some time. Love this time of year - visiting neighbors apple trees (with permission), stripping the red luscious fruit from our own trees, heading out to the apple orchards...Perhaps the orchards are my favorite part of the apple season. There is just something special about hanging out in the apple trees discovering what flavor apple is your favorite and filling a bag with all the best you can find. And, a cuppa hot apple … (9 comments)

kids: Don't miss the homecoming parade!!!! Tonight in Elk River. - 09/23/11 04:07 PM

Tonight in Elk River (September 23, 2011) School Street will be closed off at 4pm in preparation for the annual homecoming parade. Will you be there? This is a festive event in our community rallying together our football teams and local sports programs. It's a great time to see the spirit of the community as well as celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of our youngsters.Hopefully it's the beginning to a noisy night at the football park as fans and friends noisily cheer on the teams playing. This year Elk River is playing Monticello (a very nearby neighboring community) and it … (6 comments)

kids: Putting a goat to sleep.... - 08/21/11 11:09 PM

We went to the Nowthen Threshing Show today and enjoyed every minute of this special event! With all of us walking away with special memories of the day and learning more about farming and the "old way of life" we were thrilled to be able to attend! If you ask my five year old the best part was holding the baby goat and putting it to sleep in his lap. He insisted on feeding the kids and after a could of bleats successfully found one to sit with him. Both boys wanted in on the fun (as you can see), but … (5 comments)

kids: Children's Lit Review..... Homes take vacations? - 08/04/11 10:48 AM

The House Takes a VacationBy: Jacqueline Davies

Okay, so maybe this isn't a book about moving, but it's worth the list. With little legs and a LOT of personality... this house is worth the read especially if you are heading out on a vacation.Have you ever wondered what happens at home while you are away? If this book is accurate at all our homes have a lot of fun when the adults are gone. From making decisions to jumping in the ocean and leaving it's foundation behind.... this book covers all the vacation basics. With a few giggles and play … (2 comments)

kids: If you built a fair ride.... wordless wednesday - 07/20/11 09:47 PM

A wordless Wednesday that is more funny when you know the back story. I'll keep it short! I think. We took the kidlets to the County Fair this weekend and they had loads of fun riding rides. That was the entire purpose of visiting the fair this year. Kids watched the fairgrounds build up for two weeks prior to the opening and all I heard were endless pleas in the backseat... Sounded like, "When do WE get to go to the fair and ride those rides?"After awhile it just wears a girl down... so we obliged the insistent requests and it … (5 comments)

kids: Have no fear... the ambulance is here! Taking a trip to the Sherburne County Fair - 07/17/11 01:02 AM
Remember those old episodes of M*A*S*H* that you watched everyday as a child? Maybe that only happened in our house. My children have never seen the show, but they certainly figured out the activing for it in a hurry! It took all of two minutes for my son to lay on the stretcher at the fair today. With Grandpa's help he took his turn as 'the patient' on the way to the hospital....YOu wouldn't believe his remarkable recovery when we announced it was time to visit the animals though. With a hop and a skip and a jump off the back they … (6 comments)

kids: Gettin' that gardening groove on.... - 05/12/11 12:29 AM
It's time.... it just can't be avoided. The sun was out, the temps are above 65 again, and my garden tools were calling my name. If I hadn't been out working with the animals I may have never heard the beckoning. Before I knew what was what it was 7pm and the kid's were begging to head indoors for the night. Yes, you heard me right, the kids were begging to go inside. We spent hours in the gardens today. My little troopers helped me plant the herb seeds and shovel new dirt into my flower gardens. Then while they played and … (12 comments)

kids: Go ladybug Go.... (wordless wednesday!) - 04/12/11 11:20 PM

Spring has sprung in Minnesota and April is the best time to dig out the kites.... The kids love it... adults love it... and it's that season after winter and before summer that provides the greatest wind speed for catching some air. This year is no exception. With weather hitting the 70's today and parks nice and dry it's perfect for some fun! We like Lion's Park for flying kites because of the wide open spaces. It's great fun!

kids: Playing... in Elk River - 04/09/11 09:57 AM
It's an honest goal really. Playing. Elk River has more than 40 parks and recreation spots that they offer the citizens at no cost... and this year we aim to play in every one. It's for the adventure really. The boys love it and so do I...From picnics to quick stops on our way through a neighborhood we are journeying through the 'sweet' spots that Elk River has to offer.
We love this time of year with the weather  warming the earth and the sun shining so bright. It's hard to stay indoors and accomplish anything when the outside is beckoning … (6 comments)

kids: The Louds Move In!... (A children's lit review on moving) - 02/18/11 11:37 PM
The LOUDS Move In!By: Carolyn Crimi

Once in awhile you run across the story that brings out the best in your children. This book brought on giggles from my boys that I didn't expect. They laughed so much the first time through that they immediately asked me to start over and read it again.... so I did. I didn't understand why they found it so funny, but the second time around they almost had me chuckling along with them. This is NOT necessarily a book for children moving into a home... though it may be a good one if the child … (3 comments)

kids: Follow the Line.... (A children's lit review on moving) - 02/18/11 11:22 PM

Follow the Line through the houseBy: Laura Ljungkvist
This is a really simplistic book with large words and simple pictures. My 5-year old was a bit yawn-ee over the book but my 3-year old liked the pictures. Once they started looking closer at what they were seeing the both of them got into a bit more.My perception actually went to showings. If you are taking little ones along while looking at homes it might be a great read to prepare them for the expectations while out. This might work both on the selling side and the buying side. If … (3 comments)

kids: The Little Crooked House.... A children's Lit review on moving - 02/12/11 12:13 AM

The Little Crooked HouseBy: Margaret Wild & Jonathan BentleyRemember that little diddy growing up about the man with a crooked house? I never realized before that it was a whole story. This is a really really cute story bringing"light" to the idea of moving. If only homes could have legs and up and move whenever we needed to find a new neighborhood.Going from being right near a railroad track all the way through many challenging places and ending in a safe spot between two homes in the city...The man and the crooked house finally finds his way home.

kids: Bear at Home (a kid's book review) - 01/10/11 10:37 PM
Bear At Home                                                        by: Stella Blackstone

Wow! It's been awhile since I've written one of these!  This book is cute. My boys like it's simplistic pictures and have discussed Bear's house at length. It seems that even four year olds can and do enjoy home plans. The overlooking blueprint of Bear's house at the end is the highlight of their discussions. They wonder often at his rooms and the layout.
This isn't exactly a book about 'moving' but I can see it as a conversation starter with a youngster about a move. Easily I could see it as a reason … (3 comments)
