Acqua Lianna is one of the first green "triple certified" 15,000 square foot mansions. It has an ocean view floor and also boasts many sustainable features that are considered eco-responsible and energy efficient. However the size and several other characteristics go against my mind set of "green"

Ironic isn't it that a synthetic cloth of non-eco-responsible fibers is one of the pillars of the green community. It just goes to show you that you can be a rebel or an outcast and still come out shining for the cause. So what is this darling of the greens, microfiber, actually all about. In a nutshell it is a polyester/polyamide cloth that can hold 7 times its weight in water, yet performs best when using little water - just a bit of dampness is all it actually requires to outperform scouring pads. A few days ago a friend of mine was preparing a speech for an Interior Design industry function and asked me what I would say if I were speaking about being green. There were other speakers before her, architects and builders and she would be the last to speak. I put myself in that position and can only imagine how the audience at that point would be exhausted with data, tired of fear inducing talk about chemicals, bored with the same rhetoric in general. The Green Shame. A study by Terra Choice, conducted in 2007, was featured on the GreenBiz.com website made the following claim - .05% or 1 in 1753 green marketing claims were true, the rest were found to be false or misleading.
What does this mean for the well intentioned consumer, the companies that are involved in this high margin of deceit, and the companies who are telling the truth? In a nutshell, since that study was published, more watchdog agencies, conventional and eco-responsible, have been keeping their eyes open and their attorneys busy in 2008. Not bad for just the fifth month of the year.

Lately it seems like green is the new gray because it all blurs back into the same nondescript haze of sales pitches and half-truths. I went into a local branch of a national distributor of professional grade cleaning supplies to purchase some hoses and a new drapery wand. Whenever I am there, even though I do not purchase any cleaning solutions, I always look at the new offerings from the giants of the industry.
