It seems that there is never an end to cleaning. Yes, even keywords need to be taken off the shelf and given a good dusting once in a while to keep your site relevant and ranking properly. SEO Book has a free keyword cleaning tool that allows you to do just that.

All you have to do is grab the keywords you wish to use on your real estate website (which you can do from a number of free sources on the internet) and the cleaning tool will strip away the bad keywords and phrases that won't help your site, take out any punctuation and strip your list of any bad phrases or numbers (eliminating search counts to be included in keywords). Once you've got a "clean" list of keywords, log in to Google AdWords go to the Google Traffic Estimator page. By submitting the form (without actually bidding), you can find out which of your keywords and phrases are considered the most valuable (and, therefore, best to use) on your website.

It's Not Personal, It's Business

Tish Lloyd's excellent featured post "I'm your REALTOR®, Not Your Punching Bag" reminded me of how some people believe they can say anything they want without any consequence as long as it's under the guise of "it's not personal, it's business".

I've worked for some pretty rough bosses. One of them felt that the only way he could get respect was to beat it into your head that he was the boss and his word was law! (Like I wasn't aware of that.) I worked with one person who used to cuss to high heaven when he was having a rough day or someone was stressing him out (not me). I'm not a prude and have been known to throw out a salty "bon mot" or two myself. However, this was WAY outta hand and quite annoying, especially considering the volume at which it would be delivered. When I told him that, while I understand he's frustrated, listening to his loud tirades wasn't cool, he said, "I'm not yelling AT YOU." I told him, "Yes. But you're yelling AROUND me. Just because you're upset doesn't mean it's OK for me to hear it. Especially when you express it this way." Eventually, he got it and would just take his tirades elsewhere when he felt the need.

I also had one co-worker decide to literally yell at me over the phone "Who the f$@# do you think you are?" because he thought I had done a procedure wrong. I hung up on him. He called back and tried to cuss at me again. So, I hung up on him again. I refused to answer the phone after that. It ends up that he was actually in the wrong, but you couldn't tell him that. Even if I had been wrong, is it really OK to speak to someone that way? I don't think so.

When someone comments on your work performance, especially if they are just being cruel and not constructive, it is no longer business. It IS personal. Since I am a person who takes great pride in my work ethic, an attack on it (especially when unprovoked) hits me really hard. Just because you say it loudly, doesn't make you right. I try to keep this phrase my mom has said many times in the past when dealing with a particularly cruel individual..."It seems that life hasn't turned out the way someone thought it would." It kinda helps cool my boiling blood a bit.

Fireworks Displays in Boise

Happy 235th Birthday, America! If you're looking for a place to watch the fireworks display in Boise, head on down to Ann Morrison Park (1000 Americana Blvd, Boise, ID). Since it doesn't really begin to get dark until it nears 10:00 at night expect the fireworks to start sometime around 10:15pm. Tune your car stereo to 107.1 FM for musical accompaniment. Make sure to stay safe and keep all pets inside while fireworks are going off.

Since I'm new to the area and this will be my first 4th of July in the Treasure Valley, does anyone have suggestions other than downtown Boise for great fireworks displays? I'd love to hear from anyone "in the know". Thanks, everyone!

Movie Review Monday: Bridesmaids

I am a HUGE movie-lover. Always have been. I love all kinds of movies: comedies, chick-flicks, romance, adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, horror...you name it, I probably like it. It gives you a much broader base of entertainment that way. I'm the same way with music. In fact, a typical weekend involves at least one movie but usually a few more than that. In that vein, I thought I'd start writing a regular feature called Movie Review Monday. For my first Movie Review Monday, I thought I'd write about "Bridesmaids".

Co-written by and starring Kirsten Wiig (Saturday Night Live's Suzie Orman, Gillie and the Target Lady), "Bridesmaids" has been advertised (incorrectly, might I add) as a "chick-flick". I think this is mostly due to the fact that the main characters are all women. This is unfortunate because I think that too easily dismisses it to many male audiences who would be brought to tears by the hilariousness of the movie, just as my husband was. It might help to know that "Bridesmaids" is brought to us by the same people that brought us "Superbad", "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up" (which Ms. Wiig also had a bit part as an E! news producer making off-the-cuff rude remarks to a pregnant Katherine Heigl).

Kristin Wiig plays Annie, a 30-something woman with a lousy streak with men, who is best friends with Maya Rudolph's Annie (also from SNL...think skinny Oprah Winfrey, Celine Dion and Donatella Versace). When Annie becomes engaged, she, naturally, picks her lifelong best friend Annie to be her maid-of-honor. Annie happily accepts even as her own love life has crumbled down around her. And, when Lillian's new, rich and VERY beautiful friend Helen tries to upstage Annie at every possible moment to prove that SHE is in fact more worthy of the maid-of-honor position, every moment that unfolds is absolutely hilarious. And, Melissa McCarthy (currently on TV's "Mike and Molly", formerly of "Gilmore Girls") will make you laugh every moment she is on screen.

I encourage anyone who wants to laugh so hard they cry to run out to the movie theaters and watch "Bridesmaids". This movie proves that women find humor in the silly, sick and twisted just as men do and they look damn good doing it!

Motivational Monday: Three Sides of the Coin

You've most likely heard the phrase "two sides of a coin", meaning there are two sides to every argument. Well, I say there are actually three sides of the coin: my side, your side and the truth. Everyone's opinion is a culmination of their past experiences, present situation and the frame of mind they are in at the time. My truth is not the same as your truth. However, your point can feel just as valid to you as my point is to me. The trick to resolving any problem is to listen to the other side's argument, give your side and, hopefully, come to a resolution as to how to fix the problem and move on.

I am a bit of a reality TV junkie. So many times, you see people arguing over something (sometimes trivial, sometimes not) and what we see through the unblinking camera lens is a much different story than the one relayed back to us from the parties involved. Sometimes, one side has more weight and validity than the other. But, hardly ever is the "remembered" version the same as what really happened. Editing also comes in to play. I propose that this is not just a reality TV phenomenon, but a real life one.

Next time you have a client who is adamant about telling you what you did wrong and how you have totally messed everything up, step back, take a breath, truly digest the information they have provided and think before you respond. There may be some truth in there somewhere. By looking at the situation with a rational head instead of a defensive one, you can assess the situation better and provide a clearer picture for your client. There may be issues going on in their life that you are not privy to and you have caught them at that one bad moment where they feel the need to explode. You just happen to be caught in the fallout. Admittedly, this is not an ideal situation, but it does happen. Of course, sometimes there are just some people you can't make happy no matter what you do. But, that's what happens in business and life.

Remember that there are actually three sides to an argument: my side, your side and the truth. Finding that third side of the coin can help you be a better REALTOR® and a better person.

My Spring Garden

It's that time of year, people. Time to get your spring garden in order if you're willing. This year, my husband and I have been toying with the idea of actually starting one up. It's in an effort to be healthier to our waistlines as well as our pocketbooks, since groceries are getting so high. I'm not sure what to plant, though. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is good to plant for newbies, such as myself and tips on how to keep up a small household garden? I'd love to hear from you.

Boise's Own Roller Derby

I have been a fan of roller skating since I was a kid. I even tried to teach my mom when I was 11, but I couldn't get her to let go of the chainlink fence (some people just can't be taught). The Drew Barrymore film "Whip It" renewed my interest in checking out roller derbies. Imagine my giddiness when I saw a billboard ad for the Treasure Valley Rollergirls, Boise's own roller derby team. Of course, I rushed to get my tickets. They will be taking on the Salt City Shakers (from Salt Lake City) and the Southern Oregon Rollergirls (out of Medford, OR) at the Qwest Arena in Boise in a special "Quadromania" on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

If you're interested in attending, tickets are only $10 each for general admission and VIP floor seating. Doors open at 6pm and the first bout begins at 7pm. You can purchase tickets at the Qwest Arena, but the girls only get a percentage of the money from those ticket sales. If you purchase your tickets online or at one of the following local stores, all the money goes directly to the girls:

Mixing it Up in Martinsville

Yesterday's NASCAR race was at the half-mile Martinsville track and the boys really did mix it up. There was a lot of talk by drivers about tire wear before the race. However, that didn't seem to be a real issue during the race itself. As is typical at these short tracks, you need to be out front to dominate. Pole-sitter Jamie McMurray (#1) kept the lead for the first 30 laps or so, when Ryan Newman (#39) briefly took over before Denny Hamlin (#11) blew by them both on Lap 35. The Hendricks boys (#5, #24, #48 & #88) seemed to be doing quite well, with all four cars in the top 10 at one point.

On Lap 220, Martin Truex Jr's (#56) throttle get stuck. He is unable to slow down in a turn and ends up ramming into the safer barrier wall at full speed, taking Kasey Kahne (#4) out with him. After Martin climbs out of his car, he runs over to make sure Kasey is OK (true sportsmanship). The race is red flagged (completely stopped) while the fluid and debris from the wreck are cleaned up. A later interview with Martin shows him giving thanks for NASCAR implementing the safer barrier and other safety measures since the 2001 death of Dale Earnhardt. He said that, without those safety measures in place, he most surely would have died after that wreck. I second that!

Jimmie Johnson (#48), Clint Bowyer (#33), Jeff Gordon (#24) and Kyle Busch (#18) all take their turns leading the pack for a while. In a move reminiscent of his father (and one done earlier by Kyle Busch himself), Dale Earnhardt Jr (#88) bumps Kyle in a turn and takes the lead. Of course, the crowd goes wild. Meanwhile, while Jr and Busch are busy battling it out, Kevin Harvick's #29 steadily heads up the field and passes them both by with four laps to go, eventually taking the checkered flag. And that, my friends, is why he is called "The Closer".

Congratulations to Kevin Harvick! The next race will be under the lights at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 9th. Race coverage begins at 7:30pm EST on FOX.

2011 Boise Flower and Garden Show

Spring is definitely in the air. To celebrate, the 2011 Boise Flower and Garden Show comes to the Boise Center this weekend, March 25th through the 27th. Get ideas for landscaping, gardens, decor, outdoor furnishings, decking and much more.

Attend one of the gardening seminars, view special orchid and bonsai tree displays, oggle with envy at the professionally judged flower displays and even get the kids involved in gardening with the kids' craft areas. But, it's not just about getting your hands dirty. There will be plenty of local Idaho food available at the Specialty Foods Pavilion, a silent auction of container gardens (proceeds will benefit the Lunaria League, a local nonprofit organization that promotes botanical gardens through the state) and Wine & Jazz evenings on Friday and Saturday nights.

The hours for the 2011 Boise Flower and Garden Show are 10am to 9pm on Friday, 10am to 8pm on Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday. Sometimes Life Gets in the Way of Blogging

I had made a New Year's resolution to post one blog post a day. And I had kept that promise up the end of February. That's when I got derailed. My life got in the way of my blogging. First, I got a part-time job at night that ate up much of my free time during the week. And then, three weeks ago, we were out with our family, celebrating my 18th wedding anniversary, when my mother-in-law had to be taken to the hospital after complaining of chest and back pains. Fast forward four days and she had open heart surgery to replace the aortic valve in her heart. (Now, she's part piggy...my husband thinks it's funny to snort at her occassionally. He even took away the bacon they gave her during her recovery, saying it was tanamount to cannibalism.) She then had an adverse reaction to the medications she was given, making her extremely unresponsive to what was going on around her and making the doctors think that there might be brain damage. Things were touch and go for several days. That did pass and now she's doing great, as long as she can ignore the invisible elephant that has taken up residency on her chest. My family definitely comes from strong stock!

Now, I could beat myself up for not getting my blogging done as I had meant to. But, I'm not going to. Instead. I choose to move forward, secure in the knowledge that I will be blogging to my little heart's content now that things have settled back into a more normal (albeit, still busy as hell) pace. Yes, Active Rainers. Life can get in the way of blogging and that's OK. It's nice to know I can always come back, though, and be a part of this community I love so much. I'm now going to have to plan ahead and gear up for my daily posts on the weekends, I think. Whew!

Beware the Ides of March

Beware the Ides of March! That would be today, dear folks. But what does that mean? That means it's the 15th day of March. There are also "ides" of May, July and October that fall on the 15th of their respective months. The ides were originally created to honor the Roman God of War, Mars. However, people were warned to "Beware the Ides of March" when Julius Cesar was stabbed to death on March 15, 44BC (as immortalized in Shakespeare's classic play "Julius Cesar"). Shakespeare also gave us "et tu, Brute?" (even you, Brutus?), since it was he who lead the coupe in the Roman Senate.

NASCAR NATION: Dry Spell Ends in the Desert

I was at the hospital earlier today with a family member so I was unable to watch the entire race. But, I was so happy that I got to see the end of NASCAR's Sprint Cup race in Phoenix this afternoon when, after a long 66 winless streak, Jeff Gordon was able to end his dry spell in the desert. He was declared the winner of the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Congratulations to Jeff, new crew chief Alan Gustafson, the entire Drive to End Hunger team and Mr. Rick Hendricks for mixing it up enough to breathe new life into the team of my favorite NASCAR driver. This was some much needed good news to end my otherwise rather dreary weekend. Nice job, boys!

Record-Breaking at Daytona 500

What a way to start the year, folks! There's a REASON fans and drivers alike love Daytona. There were 74 lead changes, 22 different leaders and a whopping 16 cautions brought out during the 200 laps. But, the biggest surprising record-breaker was the winner, Trevor Bayne. Driving the #21 for the Wood Brothers, Trevor became the youngest driver to ever win the Daytona 500, besting previous record holder Jeff Gordon by more than 5 years. In fact, Trevor just turned 20 on Februray 19th (the day before the race).

Trevor's amazing skills as a "pusher" in the "it takes two to tango" duets going on all day were first made evident in the Budweiser Shootout on the Sunday before. Trevor didn't even toss his name into the Rookie of the Year pot because he is only driving a limited race schedule for the year in Sprint Cup due to the financial constraints the Wood Brothers have fallen upon in the last several years. Although, from what I understand, thanks to the win on Sunday, the Wood Brothers have talked about adding a couple more Sprint Cup races to Trevor's schedule this year. This was definitely a boost in the arm they needed!

Even with the changes NASCAR employed after seeing speeds in excess of 200mph at the Budweiser Shootout, half of the record-breaking caution flags flew in the first half of the race. The "big one" came out at Lap 29, taking out 15 cars, including such racing bigwigs as Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers (in his return after his incredibly scary health problems last year) and five-time series winner Jimmie Johnson.

On the first Green-White Checker attempt, Robbie Gordon got loose, saved his car from hitting anybody and ended up being the catalyst for a late race crash when he tried to get back into line. Ryan Newman, Dale Jr and Martin Truex Jr got caught up in that one, dashing their hopes of winning the race. With the second Green-White-Checker attempt, the more experienced Carl Edwards looked like he might be the one to overtake Trevor Bayne but the kid won out, making it seem like easy work to win NASCAR's biggest race of the year.

Amazing! The next race will be held at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 3pm EST on Fox. What a fantastic start to what may just be an amazing year.

Target is one of my absolute favorite stores. They are always clean, the staff is friendly and they have just what I'm looking for and more at very reasonable prices. On February 26, 2011 from 9am to 11am, Targets across the country will be hosting Dr. Seuss Storytime, a free event to encourage children to get out from in front of the television sets, computer screens and handheld entertainment devices to read a good book. As a lover of books and someone who built up my child's library while he was still in my womb, this is something I can definitely get behind!

In addition to listening to readings of some of your favorite Dr. Seuss books, Target will be giving away prizes and coupons. Dr. Seuss Storytime is just one of the ways Target gives back to their local communities. Through March 15th, all featured Dr. Seuss books will be on sale at 2 books for $10. Check with your local store to see if your Target is hosting Dr. Seuss Storytime Saturday, February 26, 2011.
