nascar: NASCAR NATION: California Natives Rule at Pepsi 500 in Fontana - 10/12/09 06:36 PM
The California natives ruled at the Pepsi 500 in Fontana, CA on Sunday, October 11, 2009.  Once again, Hendrick Motorsports proved why they own the Auto Club Speedway.  I guess this is apropos for the company who is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.  After Jessie McCartney skipped a line or two of the National Anthem (practicing the national anthem before you perform it in front of a bunch of rednecks might be a good idea), grand marshal Kelsey Grammar gave the "Gentlemen, start your engines!" to begin the first Sprint Cup race to come to Southern California.  Jimmie Johnson quickly overtook pole … (7 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Bubbles Burst in Richmond Race - 09/15/09 03:20 PM
Bubbles were burst at NASCAR's Sprint Cup Race in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, September 12, 2009.  To quote Heidi Klum from Project Runway: "One of you will be in and the other will be out."  (Yes, I am a girly-girl who watches Project Runway and manages to absolutely love NASCAR, but that's who my husband fell in love with.  If he can deal with it, so can you.)
After a short rain delay which allowed ABC to finish airing Michigan's win over Notre Dame on Saturday evening, there was some rockin' and rollin' going on at Richmond.  There were actually two … (5 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Watch Them Wiggle at Atlanta Motor Speedway - 09/08/09 03:39 PM
"Watch them wiggle, see them jiggle."  This is what kept running through my mind as I watched the Sprint Cup race on Sunday night at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.  First, there was poor Carl Edwards who hobbled in on crutches after breaking his foot in a weird Frisbee accident.  (Yes, you CAN injure yourself while playing Frisbee).  While hurting yourself playing Frisbee may not sound very manly, driving 500 miles with a broken foot (your gas foot, too) is VERY manly.  As is driving a car whose paint scheme was created by a 13-year-old girl in her 3rd year of fighting … (2 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: $1 Million 1-2 Punch at Chicagoland Speedway - 07/13/09 12:57 PM
What started out as a pretty boring race ended up in a blaze of rubbin', bumpin' and racin' hard at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday, July 11th.  When there were only two cautions thrown after the first 200+ laps of a 267 lap race (and those were for debris only), it appeared that no one was even close competition for Mark Martin.  He kept passing car after car, narrowing the number of cars on the lead lap down to around 14 or 15 by the end.  Jimmie Johnson ran out front for a little bit.  But, it was definitely Mark's race to … (4 comments)

nascar: Slip Slidin' Away at Daytona with NASCAR - 07/06/09 11:28 PM
Well, Daytona did not disappoint!  NASCAR's Coca-Cola 400 on July 4th had fireworks that nobody can actually plan for.  You just have to understand that this is what happens with restrictor plate racing.  Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson and Denny Hamlin were pretty dominant throughout most of the race.  The first "big one" happened smack dab in the middle of the race at Lap 77.  It appears that Kasey Kahne may have bumped into the back of David Stremme, making his car wiggle right into Jamie MacMurray (#26) and causing a huge pileup and a couple more wrecks.  It managed to take … (16 comments)

nascar: NASCAR Nation: Yes He Kahne - Recap of Sonoma Spring Cup Race 2009 - 06/21/09 11:45 PM

Holy smokes, folks!  Another great race.  Lots of spinning, lots of rubbin' and lots of smoke.  After a couple of last minute caution flags and shoot-out style restarts, Washington State's very own Kasey Kahne ended a year long winless streak to edge out Tony Stewart for the checkered flag at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway this afternoon.  The Tasmanian Devil himself, Marcos Ambrose, ran a fantastic race and ended up 3rd.  This is why I love the road race format.  You never know what you're going to end up with.  A spinout on a road race doesn't necessarily bring out the caution … (4 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Lifelock 400 at Michigan International Speedway - 06/14/09 11:33 PM
Holy cow!  What a way to race to the finish, folks!  When Kid Rock is the grand marshal and gives the ("Gentlemen, start...your...engines" cue at the beginning of the race, you know it's gotta be good!  After running away with the lead for most of the 200 laps, Jimmie Johnson appeared to have the checkered flag all but in his little hands when, at one lap to go, he ran out of fuel.  Heartbreakingly, Jimmie went from 1st place at the white flag (1 lap to go) to finish 22nd, after coasting into pit road, getting a splash and dash of … (2 comments)

nascar: Leaders to the Front, Traffic to the Rear! - 06/04/09 07:05 PM
Today, NASCAR announced that, starting this weekend at Pocono, they will employ the shoot-out style of double-file restarts.  This means that all restarts after a caution flag will line up like they do at the beginning of the race, ie double-file, but with the cars in 1st and 2nd place heading up the front of each line, with 3rd and 4th behind them in the second row, 5th and 6th behind them in the third row and so on and so on.  Any cars a lap down and the "lucky dog" will be in the back of the double file restart … (10 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Mixing it Up at the Monster Mile - Dover 2009 - 06/02/09 01:45 AM
What a difference a week makes!  After last week's long, drawn out race that wouldn't end, the exciting Monster Mile proved to be what fans love to see: short track racing at its best.  There were a few lead changes throughout the race, a couple of wrecks here and there, but the final 3 or 4 laps were what makes you sit on the edge of your seat and yell at the TV.  See, in my house, we have both Jimmie and Tony fans.  My son ADORES Tony Stewart.  So, when Tony took the lead and appeared to have it in … (4 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Cocoa Cola 600 at Charlotte has FINALLY Finished! - 05/25/09 10:45 PM
Whew!  I knew that the Cocoa Cola 600 was supposed to be the longest race of the year, but this was just too ridiculous.  I needed a nap when it was over.  After two days, six and a half hours, 224 laps completed, TONS of rain/rain delays and an incredibly risky but ultimately smart call by Crew Chief Rodney Childers, David Reutimann won the 50th race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in the #00.  In fact, three of the six caution flags were thrown for rain.  This is so NOT the way I like to see a race end.  My driver (Jeff … (4 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Cocoa Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway Update - 05/24/09 10:26 PM
Just a quick update to all my NASCAR peeps out there. After a very lengthy rain delay and valant attempt by NASCAR to clear the track, the race at Lowe's Motor Speedway has been postponed until Monday. So, tune in to your local Fox affiliate at 12pm EST, when the longest race of the year is scheduled to begin. In case you don't know the qualifying order, here ya go:
Did not qualify: JJ Yeley #41, Mike Garvey #73, Todd Bodine #64 and David Starr #106. Tune back in to my blog tomorrow afternoon to see what the outcome of this … (8 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: The Whirling Dervishes of Darlington 2009! - 05/11/09 07:16 PM
Whew!  What a race!  In typical Darlington fashion, these racecars turned into whirling dervishes on the track.  I don't think even one car got away without trading paint with the candy cane striped outer Darlington wall.  In the second night race in a row, there were a record 16 cautions and countless single car spins that managed to avoid being "the big one" (like the two we had at Talladega).  We even got a fireball rolling down the track thanks to Michael Waltrip in the #55.  When he dropped the engine, an oil fire ignited his car … (8 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Rain Delay & Happy Birthday at Richmond International Raceway 2009 - 05/04/09 07:11 PM
And the win goes to the birthday boy, Kyle Busch.  After a brief rain delay, things got underway at Richmond International Raceway for Saturday's night race in NASCAR Sprint Cup's 10th race of the season.  My man, Jeff Gordon, looked like he was going to have a pretty strong run at another win until little old Shrub came on like gangbusters with about 40 or so laps to go.  Although, Jeff's 8th place finish put him at the top of the leaderboard in the points race again.  Yippee!  Was it just me or was this another pretty boring race even WITH a … (2 comments)

nascar: NASCAR Nation: Talladega Wrecks 2009 - 04/27/09 09:39 AM
Wow!  What a race!  They don't call it the fastest track for nothing, right?  My race really ended at Lap 7, when Matt Kenseth bumped Jeff Gordon (just a race bump, not a "wanna make you wreck" bump) and sent Jeff slamming into the wall for the first big wreck of the day.  The wreck took out last week's winner, Mark Martin, for the rest of the race.  Some of the others that got caught up in the wreck were Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne and AJ Allmendinger, who all eventually made it back on to the track, albeit several laps down.  … (22 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix - April 18, 2009 - 04/19/09 09:03 PM
Congratulations go out to pole sitter and winner: the little jockey, Mark Martin.  He's one of the nicest and most humble men in all of NASCAR.  He SO deserved it.  He was definitely the dominating car at Saturday night's race.  He was the winner at the first NASCAR race I ever attended.  So, it was lovely to see him win and get his 400th Top 10 finish of his career.  That being said, I have to tell you..that was the most painful experience watching a race that I have ever had the displeasure of watching.  As you all know, I am … (4 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Sprint Cup's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway Wrap-Up - 04/05/09 10:50 PM
HE DID IT!  HE DID IT!  HE DID IT!  OK, sorry about that.  I've been waiting 47 races to be able to say that.  So, I got a little excited.  My man, Jeff Gordon, won this week's Sprint Cup race at the Texas Motor Speedway.  On his 17th attempt at a win at this track, he finally got to add a check to the win column.  Now there is only one NASCAR track he has not won at in his career.  But, at the rate he's going, I'm sure he'll be able to conquer that as well.  I have to admit, … (5 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 in Martinsville VA - 03/29/09 05:27 PM
Rubbin's racin'!  Martinsville was everything Bristol wasn't.  Thank goodness!  Jimmie Johnson proved why he is a 3-time champion (in a row, might I add).  The qualifying rainout meant that my boy, Jeff Gordon, was in pole position to start the race.  I was hopeful, too, when he started so strongly.  Then it seemed to be a race between Jeff and Denny Hamlin.  At the closing stretch, it was a battle between Hamlin and eventual winner, Jimmie.  Now, I am not a fan of the spinout to win.  But, I think a little bump and run is A-OK in my book.  Although, … (5 comments)

nascar: NASCAR NATION: Bristol Food City 500 Wrap-Up - 03/22/09 07:01 PM
Shrub did it again.  Kyle Busch dominated Bristol's Food City 500 Sprint Cup race today in Tennessee.  I love NASCAR, but I have to admit that it was a pretty boring race for the most part.  Kyle headed to the front early and didn't let up for most of the 500 laps.  Short tracks tend to have either many wrecks/cautions or long runs.  There were a total of nine yellow flags, but no major wreckage (which is a good thing for all involved).  And, happily, my boy Jeff Gordon wracked up another Top 5 finish (his third Top 5 in five … (13 comments)

nascar: Sunday, Bloody Sunday - 03/13/09 03:39 PM
No NASCAR on Sunday?  Whatever are we going to do with our time?  I am going to have to leave the sanctity of my home and actually venture outside into the beautiful, sunny Southern California air.  Well, the air in Southern California is really brown, not sunny.  If you can't chew it, it ain't SoCal!  I'm heading out to Lake Havasu City, AZ this weekend to watch my little 5-year-old nephew race "duht bikes" (he can't quite pronounce his "R"s...it's really cute).  And, the air is clean, not chewable, in Arizona.  Since I can't watch any Boogity, Boogity, Boogity on TV, … (4 comments)

nascar: NASCAR Recap: Atlanta Motor Speedway - 03/08/09 10:53 PM
Again, always a bridesmaid and never a bride.  My man, Jeff Gordon, just couldn't quite make it to victory circle this week.  But, I'm confident that, with the year he's having so far, I will be posting a "Way To Go #24" soon.  I can't wait!  Jeff cemented his place as #1 in points, with a 43 point lead over second place Clint Bowyer.  Congratulations go to Kurt Busch, who very definitely had THE dominating car this week.  An astronomical 11 caution flags were waved today at the NASCAR Sprint Cup race.  With 31 of the 43 drivers finishing one lap … (11 comments)
