At the moment, I don't have any words, only tears... forwarding George T.'s words as they speak for us all.

With love,

Heather

Via Boise Idaho Real Estate - George Tallabas:

Karen George lost her battle with cancer today but she will never loose the love and respect hundreds of Active Rain members from across the country that were touched by this incredible woman have for her.

When I joined Active Rain in May of 2007 I was a lost little puppy. Karen is one of those that wrote some awesome blogs that helped me grow my presence on Google both with my Active Rain Profile and my own web site.

When Karen was too sick last summer her husband Michael wrote a page for my site in an attempt to have it climb higher with the search engine rankings.  I did not expect this at all and told Michael it was not necessary. He did it anyway.  Many of you don't know but even when Karen was very, very ill and could hardly sit up she would write blogs here on Active Rain in an attempt to help us with the great advice she always gave.

If you have not read Karen's blogs I highly recommend you do.  99.9% of everything she wrote was to help you and I grow our business.  I read many of Karen's blogs and put the recommendations into action which is one of the main reasons I have had so much success on the web.

Karen was a giver.  When Karen was well she heard of an elderly man that was confined to his home due to an illness.  Karen purchased this man a notebook computer with internet access so he could communicate with his family and friends.

This is the type of life Karen lived.  She was a "giver" and cared so very much about others. When she gave Karen never wanted anthing in return.  She took many of my calls and patiently explained things to me in layman's terms.  I hope we can all learn from Karen's giving soul.  If someone needs help, lets reach out to them in a loving way just like Karen did and would want all of us to do.

We lost an Angel on earth here today but the heaven's are rejoicing and having a party.  Everyone throws a party when someone so special is coming to join them.

Thank you Karen for everything you did for me and for holding my hand when I didn't understand.  Thank you for your incredible knowledge and your desire to help.

You will be missed and I can assure you that this world was a better place because you were part of it.  I will continue to pray for Michael and will do anything to help him.

I love you Karen

I was fortunate enough to attend Inman Connect and REBarCamp last week in San Francisco, and was there when the winners of Active Rain's Makeover to Takeover competition were announced. I personally learned so much from watching their entries as the competition progressed, and I am working toward implementing some of the projects they tackled. My hat is off to the teams for all that they accomplished. Congrats to Brian and Dez, Kim and Missy, and Jeannette and Midori, as well as all the other teams!

Cheers,

Heather

Kiss a pig contest!

Well, I have been nominated to participate in the 2008 Kiss A Pig contest for the Loudoun County Fair!  In it's 73rd year, it is one of the longest running traditions of Loudoun County, and I'm honored to be a part of it! I'm tasked with raising money to benefit the Loudoun County Fair grounds, including the upkeep of the barns and buildings and funding youth programs and scholarships. I have until the final night of this year's fair, August 2nd, to raise as much as I can.

Here is the fun part...the contestant that raises the most money gets to lock lips with a pig at 6:30 pm, Saturday, August 2nd! Each dollar I raise is a vote for me. I'd love to have your support with this! (And yes, you are all invited to come witness...if I win, I will post the picture here for everyone to see!)

To donate to my campaign, you can do several things:

  • Donate online via PayPal by clicking here.
  • Drop it off at my Weichert office at 663 Potomac Station Drive, Leesburg, VA 20176
  • Drop it off at the pro shop at Westpark Golf Club
  • Mail it in to me at my attention, to my office address above
  • Email me at heatherelias@weichert.com or call my cell at   571-233-5491   for directions on how to donate via credit card.

Checks should be made payable to Loudoun County Fair and postdated to August 2nd. I can provide the fair's tax id number for anyone making a donation.

I'll be adding more drop off locations in the next few days, so watch for an update. I'm open to a sponsorship idea: for the right donation I'm happy to wear hat or shirt with your business logo at the ceremony, or give you a shoutout in any media stories about the contest! If you have a local business and would permit me to put one of my piggybanks there, please give me a shout and let me know.

The 2008 Loudoun County Fair will run from July 28th through August 2nd.  The lineup of events for this year includes the Demolition Derby, KYDA Professional Wrestling, a concert by Scott Hisey, a Professional Rodeo, and Hansen's Spectacular Circus Thrill Show. Of course, the amusement rides, the 4H animal exhibitors and competition, the Miss Loudoun contest, livestock auction, and all the great food will be back for another year. You can find information about all these and other events planned by visiting the Loudoun County Fair website.

Thanks for your support!

Cheers,

Heather

make it right

I recently read a news report about the Make it Right project that Brad Pitt has started in the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. I was touched by this effort to rebuild 150 homes for the residents there. He set up an architectural competitition to design homes for the ward that would be stronger and healthier, while also being "green", having less impact on the environment. The resulting home design is sleek, simple, stylish, and strong.

The Make It Right project is looking for donors to help raise funds to build these homes. Pitt has committed $5 million of his own money to the project. At the website for the project, individual donors can take a virtual walk through the home design, and click on which of the features you wish to sponsor; a gallon of paint is $25, a programmable thermostat is $100, lighting for the whole house is $500, with all kinds of other features available too. A whole house can be sponsored for $150,000. When I first looked at the site three days ago, only one home had been sponsored of the 150; now 9 are! You can track the total in the upper right corner.

The residents of the Lower 9th need all the help they can get to rebuild their community and come home. Plese take the time to look at the site and find a way to support the project.  Every little bit will help make a difference in the lives of the people there.

Sincerely,

Heather

Westpark Banner

One of Loudoun County's best kept golfing secrets is Westpark Golf Club. Located just off the Route 7 West/ 15 South bypass within the town of Leesburg, Virginia, the course was designed by Ed Ault and opened in 1968. Originally named Leesburg Country Club, Westpark appeals to golfers of all playing levels.

The silo and barn housing the golf carts are original to the property, as part of the farm that was there prior to the course's opening. Homes were constructed in the Leesburg Country Club neighborhood surrounding the course in the years after it opened. While there is no affiliation between the neighborhood and the club, many residents choose to purchase memberships and enjoy playing the course.

The clubhouse holds a full service pro shop, with equipment, golf apparel, and accessories. The driving range is open year-round and practice putting and chipping greens are available. Golf instruction is available for all skill levels, and every summer the club hosts a junior golf camp for a hundred budding golfers. The course also hosts several charity golf events each year.

Daily play rates range from $15 to walk 9 holes on a weekday to $55 to ride 18 holes on a weekend morning at the peak of the summer season. Memberships run the gamut from $895 for a single, weekday membership covering just greens fees for the year, to $3395 for a platinum couple's membership, which covers carts, greens fees, handicap, and range plan for the year. PGA Head Golf Professional Michael Elias is available to answer any questions about membership, handicaps, outings, and instruction at the pro shop at 703-777-7023, or by email at westparkgc@verizon.net .
