VREBC - A Success Story (in one girls opinion)

Living 17 miles west of the middle of nowhere the nearest major airport is just under 6 hours away. I like the middle of nowhere - Lake Powell - but the air travel thing can put a crimp in the fact I am sort of a techie (from way back - say Commodore 64). I've followed REBC on AR, FB, AG, Inman, and the like photos, stories and tips from the participants who share but have always felt a wee tinge of sadness at not being part of it.

That sure changed on Tuesday of this last week with the RE Tomato guys putting on the virtual sister to REBC - VREBC.

Out of town clients kept me occupied in the morning, so several of the early sessions I missed. I got back to 17 miles west of the middle of nowhere before noon and quickly connected using the pre-registration email.

The Good. Lots of take aways for me.

Posterous (which i could sense was awesome but didn’t really “get”) is now comfy in it’s new home safely on my own, self hosted WP blog.

Apture is installed and I've take my first baby steps using it.

Oh yes, and I got to chat with Daniel Bates, who was, without his knowledge, the single person whose blog prompted me to start mine, to take the first jump off the cliff.

Stephan Swanepoel’s illustrations really “got” me and if nothing else, verified I’m on the right path.

My Linkedin profile now has a new place – a link in all of my emails.

The conversations in the tomato chat and on twitter were zippy and unexpectedly fun. I spent the entire afternoon, listening, watching, tweeting and chatting at a furious pace.

Of the sessions I attended:

One was spammy (please buy my stuff)

Two had technical difficulties but were solved and the class went on

The rest of the classes were SUPERIOR to anything I expected.

One class, out of 27, was canceled due to the technical issues.

I would love to see the ability to download the classes I missed or review ones like Danko's Posterous or Daniel Bates' Wordpress Plug-Ins.

All in all for a first time event, I thought it Rocked. Jim Cronin and crew did an great job and I am looking forward to the next one!

Lake Powell and the Ancient Real Estate - New Series on Paleontology

I've started a new series on my Lake Powell Real Estate Blog which I should have written a long time ago.

In 1998, my then 14 year old son David, discovered what turned out to be a great specimen of a plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were water bound marine reptiles that lived at the time of the dinosaurs. Think - Loch Ness Monster - but this one had a very short neck and jaw bones 4 feet long.

Over the next several years David would make more discoveries in the Tropic Shale by Lake Powell behind Big Water, Utah. One of the discoveries would end up being a new species of Plesiosaur called “Eopolycotylus rankini”. A new species of Therizinosaur was found in the same area which David is the co-discoverer "N. graffami" which is named after our neighbor.

History of Page Attacks Trash:

· In 1980, Jim Popovich, a Glen Canyon National Recreation Area interpreter, came to Jerry Jones, Navajo Generating Station public affairs representative, to propose the idea to establish a partnership between NGS, the City of Page, the National Park Service, and later the Navajo Nation for a community clean-up.

· In the spring of 1981, the program began as a one-day community wide clean-up effort. It started with 1,200 volunteers and steadily grew.

· By 1986, more than 5,000 people joined hands to attack the litter problem. Volunteers collected 212 tons of trash in Page and nearby Navajo communities.

· NGS extended similar efforts with the LeChee Chapter, in conjunction with Earth Day.

· In 1986, Page Attacks Trash received a first place award in the 1986 “Take Pride in Arizona” campaign founded by U.S. Secretary of Interior Donald Hodel.

· In 1987, the President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors praised the clean-up program in a national report to the President of the United States.

Points of Interest Page Attacks Trash:

· Iron Eyes Cody, a figure head for the “Keep America Beautiful” campaign participated with the open ceremonies by giving the Walk in Beauty prayer in American Indian sign language.

· Senator John McCain with wife, Cindy McCain, also visited Page to participate with Page Attacks Trash.

· The Navajo communities near Page have diligently increased their participation each year with their own community clean-up efforts.

· Page Attacks Trash maintains a presence to teach our children about protecting the beauty and harmony of our vistas, community, plants and animals from the spoilage of litter.

· The anti-litter campaigns of the 1950’s, a messy cartoon insect taught children, “Don’t be a Litterbug”; 1970’s jaunty Woodsy Owl, “Give a hoot, don’t pollute!”; and from 1971, the most famous tear-stained Indian’s message “People start pollution, people can stop it”, are long gone.

New Government Plan Should Help 9 Million Keep Their Homes

This morning the federal government released a new plan aimed at lowering mortgage rates as well as monthly payments in a effort to stem the bleeding in the housing market.

The new plan is aptly named the "Making Home Affordable" initiative. To be considered for the program borrowers will have to show last years tax returns as well as 2 current pay check stubs, along with a "affidavit of financial hardship". Loans can only be modified one time.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said "It is imperative that we continue to move with speed to help make housing more affordable and help arrest the damaging spiral in our housing markets".

What does not qualify

Loans made on or before Jan 1, 2009

Single family properties worth ove $729,750.

4 million people are expected to qualify in this program, as well as another 5 million should be allowed to refinance though Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The bill for the program is a whopping 75 Billion and runs through 2012.
