lake powell: Flash Flood Video from The Lake Powell Area - 08/09/10 03:31 PM
Flash floods are a part of life in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah and happen when the summer monsoonal flow begins. This year has been particularly active. Below is some footage my son, David, shot behind our house in the Wahweap Creek basin, a normally dry wash. Wahweap Creek dumps into Lake Powell at Wahweap Bay. You can follow David on his website at http://www.rankinstudio.com or on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/rankinstudio

lake powell: Lake Powell and the Ancient Real Estate - New Series on Paleontology - 07/27/09 10:47 AM
I've started a new series on my Lake Powell Real Estate Blog which I should have written a long time ago. In 1998, my then 14 year old son David, discovered what turned out to be a great specimen of a plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were water bound marine reptiles that lived at the time of the dinosaurs. Think - Loch Ness Monster - but this one had a very short neck and jaw bones 4 feet long. Over the next several years David would make more discoveries in the Tropic Shale by Lake Powell behind Big Water, Utah. One of

lake powell: Lake Powell Gets Featured in the Phoenix East Valley Tribune - 01/29/09 01:12 AM
The East Valley Tribune newspaper in Phoenix ran a excellent article on Lake Powell last week and I would encourage everyone to follow the link to read the entire piece. The article appeared under their Life and Leisure section called Explore Arizona. Lake Powell is unique in so many ways and Byron Marlowe gets several of them right out of the gate. I particularly like this opening statement "Nowhere else are you able to find an area with this amazing beauty, culture and recreation" Beginning with a brief description of the Navajo Nation he moves quickly to the history and foundation

lake powell: Glen Canyon Dam to start charging for Tours - 10/18/08 08:01 PM
Beginning on January 5th, the Bureau of Reclamation and the Glen Canyon Natural History Association will charge $5.00 per adult with a discount for children and seniors. For as long as tours having been going at Glen Canyon Dam they have been free of charge while tours at Hoover Dam have been paying. Currently to tour Hoover Dam it costs $10.00. I wrote a post a couple of months ago about the Top Ten Things to do Under 5 Bucks at Lake Powell and Tour the Dam was high on the list. From 1996 to late 2002 I worked in the

lake powell: Fishing at Lake Powell featured in the Salt Lake Tribune - 10/12/08 12:15 PM
Last Sunday, October 6th, 2008, the Salt Lake Tribune ran a feature article on Lake Powell fishing and quoted Wayne Gustaveson heavily. Wayne G. has been a local fixture at Lake Powell for 33 years and writes not only a weekly article for our local Lake Powell Chronicle but has the awesome fishing resource page Wayne's Words. Wayne is the go-to guy here at Powell for fishing, and is the head biologist of the Lake Powell Project for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The Tribune article was informative and made several great points. It may be odd that a state

lake powell: Short History of Greenehaven Arizona on Lake Powell - 08/29/08 01:02 AM
This area was pretty well teaming with human life since about the year 400. There was no lake but the Colorado River was nearby. The bay in the photo is Wahweap Bay. Wahweap means "bitter water". The Colorado, before the dams, was either raging in the spring with the snow melt, or 90 degrees and a wall of moving mud in the late summer, early fall. The native Americans built some villages on the shores of tributaries of the Colorado, but not on the river itself. Wahweap only had water flowing in it during spring run off, or during the monsoon

lake powell: Excellent site for Lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, Havasu, Flaming Georg, Blue Mesa - 06/19/08 03:40 PM
Just want to give a "shout out" to the folks over at Water Data. Com Who provide the site Lake Powell Water Data Living next to a huge lake, much of what happens in our communities and in our business is directly tied to what happens with the Lake. I think most folks who live and work near a large recreational area have the same situtation. For several years now Lake Powell has been experiencing drought conditions and just this year, we seem to be breaking out of it. The Cut at Castle Rock has been closed for more than three

lake powell: Lake Powell Colorado River Flood Update - 03/18/08 10:01 PM
On Friday the good news started hitting the papers. It was a SUCCESS!! For background on the March 2008 flood please see FLOOD BACKGROUND The general thought is that this flood is all about the endangered fishies. It is, no doubt, but in my book it is also about the sustainable habitat downstream that has been created by the dam, as well as us wee humans enjoyment of the resource. Before I get to the news, it is somewhat fascinating that the Salt Lake Tribune's lead story on the flood was "Dam Test Revives Beaches, Gulps $4 million in electricty" while the Arizona Daily

lake powell: Big Water's New Speed Limit - a Hit - 03/12/08 08:06 PM
No pun intended. Driving though Big Water has changed notably in the last few months. The new 55 mile per hour signs up are a welcome relief to many people on both sides of the Utah/Arizona border. This is a story with a long history of local residents and elected officials attempting to have the speed limit reduced through Big Water. It is an idea whose time has come. In April of last year, a local resident and business owner, Mike Miller, was injured and his car totaled while attempting to turn left off Highway 89. Thankfully, Mike survived but sustained

lake powell: Colorado River Spring Runoff and Lake Powell Part 1 - 03/10/08 01:54 AM
Seven of the last eight years the water flowing into Lake Powell from the Colorado River, and upper basin tributaries, has been in the state of drought. 2002 saw only 25% of average inflow in to the lake. Average is such a misleading word when used in describing events in the desert. Not much average happens here. This year looks like, while not the end of the drought, to at least be a good water year. As of March 2, 2008 snowpack conditions above Lake Powell are at 124% of normal. Lake Powell is a huge water storage tank. After

lake powell: Lake Powell Water Release ~ Photos - 03/06/08 11:43 PM
Please see the blog here Lake Powell Water Releasefor background on flood. I was going to add the photos to the previous blog, but after being there for several hours today, decided they needed their own space! The jet tubes are releasing 300,000 gallons of water a second. Yup, a second. The first one is from a Glen Canyon Dam downstream viewpoint called "The Whitehouse" by the locals. Getting there is half the fun ~ it's a wee bit of a walk down steep rock steps, but beautiful. The image is HDR. This picture was taken behind the Carl Hayden Visitors Center at

lake powell: Lake Powell Water Release ~ Wow! - 03/06/08 02:25 AM
Once again the world wide media has descended on Page, Arizona, and Glen Canyon Dam to watch and record a spectacular release of water and witness environmental history. Starting yesterday and running until March 10, 2008, a high flow water release from Glen Canyon Dam is rushing down Glen Canyon and into the Grand Canyon. This test is identical to the one performed in November of 2004. The idea behind releasing greater than normal quantities of water, quickly, is to stir up the sediment in the Colorado River beyond Glen Canyon Dam, float the sediment in the water for a short

lake powell: Night Skys In Big Water Utah are hard to beat - 03/02/08 03:24 AM
Astronomy was never one of my strong suits. We had a telescope many years ago but sold it. Recently my son has gotten seriously interested in astronomy, and some of the pictures he is getting using a realtively inexpensive telescope and his Canon XTI are pretty astounding. Technology has certainly changed the accessibility to do things like this. One of the great things about living in Big Water is the lack of light pollution. The stars really shine here. Some of the photos he is taking are using exposures of up to 4 minutes. A laptop, a webcam, a small motor

lake powell: Getting Started and Going Forward - 02/15/08 11:52 AM
I am new to real estate. Whew - got that said! I am, however, not new to life, motherhood, grandmotherhood or the working world. Today is a start, a new beginning. Living in the small town, village if you will, of Big Water, Utah along with 400 other hardy souls, may not seem like a good place to start in the real estate business but au contraire; this is one of the most unique, odd, and different places in the world. Nestled up to the shores of Lake Powell, the Glen Canyon National Recreation area, the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and
