Homeownership Slips to 1998 Rates - 04/28/11 06:56 PM
The rate of homeownership in America is back down to levels not seen since 1998, according to Census data released Wednesday. The homeownership rate in the first quarter of 2011 fell to 66.4 percent, down a tick from 66.5 percent in Q4 of 2010. It marks the lowest rate of homeownership since the last quarter of 1998. After riding the crest of the housing boom through the mid-2000s, the rate of homeownership peaked in the first quarter of 2005, at 69.1 percent. With a few exceptions, prompted in part by federal stimulus programs such as the home buyer tax credit, the … (1 comments)

Mortgage Rates Rise for Fourth Straight Week - 04/14/11 06:08 PM
Interest rates on home loans headed higher this week, marking the fourth consecutive increase recorded. Still, rates remain extremely low by historical standards – a selling point market players hope will buoy activity as we move into the spring home buying season. Freddie Mac reports that rates on 30-year fixed mortgages averaged 4.91 percent (0.6 point) for the week ending April 14, 2011. That’s up from last week’s average of 4.87 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year rate was 5.07 percent.
Frank Nothaft, VP and chief economist at Freddie Mac, commented, “Mortgage rates edged up following a light week … (1 comments)

Banks Are Off the Hook Again - 04/11/11 06:52 PM
Americans know that banks have mistreated borrowers in many ways in foreclosure cases. Among other things, they habitually filed false court documents. There were investigations. We’ve been waiting for federal and state regulators to crack down.
Prepare for a disappointment. As early as this week, federal bank regulators and the nation’s big banks are expected to close a deal that is supposed to address and correct the scandalous abuses. If these agreements are anything like the draft agreement recently published by the American Banker — and we believe they will be — they will be a wrist slap, at best. At … (1 comments)

Government Shutdown May Impact First-Time Home Buyers - 04/08/11 07:42 PM
The government shutdown that will occur if Republicans in Congress and President Obama can't come to terms on budget legislation by midnight tonight could hit the ailing spring home-buying market like a ton of paving stones.
The Federal Housing Agency (FHA), a popular source of low-down-payment mortgages of as little as 3.5 percent for first-time buyers, will be closed along with other government organization. The FHA doesn't issue mortgages but rather insures lenders against default risk for any loans that meet its criteria. Of course, banks will still be able to make these loans without the FHA, but they will have … (1 comments)

Home Buyers: Is Now the Time? - 04/01/11 06:17 PM
As home buying season revs up, you may be wondering whether to start your engines or stay parked in neutral. The outlook on housing prices has been like a yo-yo--one day up, the next day down--but as Charles Wallace reports on  Daily Finance, consensus is growing among real estate market watchers that now may finally be the time to buy. Prices are affordable and interest rates remain low--a situation that might not last. So if you've got good credit and the cash for a downpayment, this spring could be your chance to put down roots. The news has been pretty gloomy … (1 comments)
