Sandwich Generation

A mere 6 years ago, both my children were still in elementary school, my parents and in-laws were all alive and still actively working and the future seemed to stretch ahead endlessly. Fast forward to the present and my son is about to graduate from high school (in 4 months he will be hundreds of miles away at college), my in laws both have suffered the infirmities of aging, my father has passed away and my mother, as I write, lies in ICU fighting for her life.

With our busy, active lifestyles we do not notice time slipping by...until the changes are suddenly thrown upon us. A few years ago, I helped the parents of a friend of mine to purchase a retirement home closer to her and her family. While at the time purchasing a 2nd home at a 55 plus community was a difficult decision for them to make (who wants to admit getting older, after all?) today they are greatful that they made that decision. It has given them time to transition to a new era in their lives and has also provided them with an opportunity to be closer to their children and grandchild. As the time approaches when they will not be as mobile as they are today, they also recognise that their second home might become their primary residence in a few years. It will be good for them to be closer to family & to be able to get assistance, if needed, while keeping some independence.

For me, my mother is thousands of miles away in a completely different country. Flying to her from the west coast means a 23 hour flight (not mentioning the waiting time at airports.) If there is a crisis, the quickest I can expect to be there is within 2 days. My family in the Seattle area also needs me and I am torn between caring for my family and caring for my aging parent...and there are no easy solutions or answers. I cannot I go back to our lives 6 years ago, but so wish that time could be reversed! If it was poosible, I would've had a conversation with my parents about purchasing a home closer to mine or my sister's. What a difference it would've made to my present situation!

To put it bluntly, it really sucks being stuck in the sandwich generation. With the baby boomer generation -- of which I am at the tail end-- aging, the best advice I can give anyone is that if you are part of the growing aging population, try to move closer to family if you can possibly do so (or want to do so!)...even if it is a second home that you will be occupying for only part of the year. Personally, that is what I plan to do sometime in the future. I do not want to repeat the mistakes of past decisions!

Good, bad and ugly... creating a real estate team

Anyone have any advice (positive or negative) to share regarding partnerships/teams?

Via Vicki Todd (Realty Executives Brio):

Well, after almost 10 years in real estate, I am now excited about joining forces with a friend and collague of over 7 years. We have been warned of the pitfalls and death traps. After consideration of all the factors both good and bad, we decided to forge forward into this new venture. Hilde Webber and I have created the Best Northwest Realty Group.

I think one of the most important factors for us in moving forward is that we trust eachother and have equal experience in real estate. We both have similar demands in our private lifes, so one won't be a race horse and the other a tortoise.... at least not all the time. There are days we will both require more support from the other and we both understand that. We are new into this, but we already have had some positive results from our potential clients. If you can get your head wrapped around and be confident in the fact that you really do offer more support and services, people like it.

Are there any of you out there who have positive experiences or advice to provide?

March advice

Years ago, my father started telling me that by the time you reach the end of March, you've reached the end of the year. At 20-something I found his words of advice quite amusing. After all, most of the year, and my life, still lay ahead. It really didn't make sense to me how my dad could think of March as the end of the year.

As I've gotten a bit older :) I realize the wisdom of his words...and its actually very applicable to us in real estate. By March we have layed the foundation for our year; we've worked out our business plan, marketing and networking strategies, we are in full swing to take on clients whether they are relocating, downsizing, upsizing, first time home buyers or those in need of a change. By the time spring ends and summer starts we will have helped clients start new lives -- either by selling their homes and/or finding a new house and helping with their transaction. Fall & winter still bring buyers and sellers -- the process never really ends -- but the end of the year is already in the crosshairs.

Guess time flies when you're having fun; just never realized how quickly it all goes by...and to think it is already the end of March and therefore close to the end of the year!

Blinded by the Light

Perhaps it was the fact that the sun suddenly came out after a few days of rain and overcast skies in Seattle, but on my way home late this afternoon, I was suddenly blinded by the light. No, not trying to reference a bad song of years ago, but an Accord driving infront of me that was emanating an intense light from its lisence plate area. Coming to a stop at a traffic light, I realized that it wasn't a design flaw of the car, but that the owner had decided to add a custom chrome license plate frame. As the sun shone on it, light was reflected so brightly, that it was as if the car had a set of extra strong HID lights shining from the back of the car. Trust me, it's difficult shielding one's eyes from light coming so strongly from the back of a car! Realized that custom license frames made out of chrome or steel are not a good idea. It might look good on your car and draw attention to whatever you want to say or advertise, but it might also leave your fellow drivers agitated at best, or blinded at worse!

Trilogy; what a community

I just wanted to share a bit of happy news. Late last year I sold a wonderful house to clients in the 55+ community of Trilogy in Redmond, WA. I just heard that they, like all the residents I've ever spoken to in that community, love their home and the whole lifestyle that Trilogy offers. Trilogy is a very active community. One of the on-site sales agents likes to say that the "R" word doesn't ever enter their vocabulary and he is right...Trilogy is not a "retirement" community. Instead it is a community for active adults who love the outdoors (miles of trails, a golf course, tennis courts) love to be active in clubs (over 60 of them exist at Trilogy including a travel club) love to take great courses (offered at the club house by UW) and love to remain active (fantastic health club in the community with spa and massage services!) So glad my clients have found such a wonderful place to enjoy living!

Why hire a realtor?

Someone told me about a group discussion that recently took place at lunch. Someone in the group was thinking of selling their home and wanted to know if anyone knew a good realtor. One person in the group started challenging the whole idea of using a realtor, saying that realtors do not earn their commission. This person went on to say that unless you are new to an area and need to learn about the different communities, schools, etc., you could just as easily find a new home yourself online. This person added that realtors don't work hard when selling a home and that they are not worth their "5%" commission. Besides the fact that this person obviously does not realize that the commission is split between the listing and selling office (plus between the broker and agent,) it made me wonder what the general perception of realtors is and how best to respond.

Thinking of how hard I work for my clients, I wondered what I would have said to this person had I had the opportunity to participate in the discussion. Yes, it is possible to see homes online, but how, without the professional experience, would you know if a house is competitively priced, what other homes in the neighborhood sold for, and how to negotiate the best price? There are so many little details that go into buying and selling a home! And contrary to this person's ideas, listing a home is not an easy task; the right listing price has to be analyzed, marketing has to be co-ordinated, staging has to be done (and yes, I have even help paint rooms in my clients homes as well as provide assistance with the general clean up of a property before it is on the market!) photos have to be taken and I even produce videos on my listings. And let's not forget about setting up title and escrow and making sure that everything is fine on title and that the buyer has the funds to close! How would you respond to someone like this person? Why should someone hire a realtor?

New Direction for Brio

EARLY EXPERIENCE IN REAL ESTATE

In 2003 I made the decision to become a Realtor and hung my first license with a "big name" company in the Puget Sound area in 2004. My first broker was a kind man who was trying to build up his business. Most of the agents were brand-new and the few seasoned veterans were either too busy or too impatient to give advice to a "newby."

After 18 months I left for a more challenging opportunity at another "big name" company. The training at this brokerage was incredible and I built up experience listing and selling everything from condo's to commercial properties. Yet, something was not quite right; I felt that as long as I brought in clients and money I was welcome, but if I had one or two slow months, I no longer was a part of the team! After two personal losses within a tight span of time, I did some serious soul searching and came to the conclusion that I was not happy!

JOINING BRIO

A few years earlier, I met Myrl Venter, who had made the very wise decision of joining Brio. Myrl is a dynamic, highly intelligent and extremely hard working, person and I recalled her contagious enthusiasm for Brio. I called Myrl and we met not long after at the Brio and Active Rain office in Bellevue. Upon entering the office, I was immediately struck by the fact that this was not a run-of-the-mill old style real estate company. It was young, driven and cutting edge & the lead capture computers made me feel that I was back home in a TV studio. I made the decision right there to leave my other brokerage & became a Realtor with Brio in May 2007.

ARDELL

A few months after I joined Brio, Pat Flynn, the broker, left and was replaced by Ardell DellaLoggia. For a few days, I queried the wisdom of my decision of joining Brio, but then I met Ardell! For those of you who have not met Ardell, she is a powerhouse of a person; very approachable and with a vast array of knowledge! From the minute that she became a part of Brio, the company took on a new, and better, direction! Everything was changed; from walls to paint to businss cards and more importantly, Ardell addressed how each and every agent does his/her business.

Ardell is the best broker that I have ever worked for. She has helped me out tremendously in the few months that she has been a part of Brio. I have never had a broker actually sit down and go over a CMA (prior to presenting it to clients) with me. I have never received such excellent advice nor have I had a broker that helped me with staging a listing!

If any of you have taken a staging course, you might remember that you were assigned to a team and that the team worked together to re-arrange the furniture and add embellishments to the house. Once you've "graduated" from the staging course, it is quite a daunting prospect to be faced with staging an entire house on your own! Recently, I had a new listing to stage and Ardell came with me, looked over the entire house and then took me shopping for items that the house needed! She spent an entire day tirelessly helping me stage the house with the items we had purchased. And, when I learned that St. Joseph reputedly can help sell a listing, Ardell took me to a Catholic store in Seattle to purchase the correct St. Joseph statues for my listings! (Yes, she is also an encyclopedia of saints!) Ardell has a passion for real estate, and more so, people. She knows just what to say & do in any situation! I have learned so much from Ardell already and hope that I can strive to be a bit like her! I am looking forward to the new direction that Brio, under Ardell, is heading for 2008 and look forward to having my business grow!

New Year, Old Memories, New Beginnings

We are in the first hours of 2008. Last night my family and I rang in the New Year with my mother and good friends of ours in Woodinville, WA. The end of a year and the start of a new one always brings with it a mixture of excitement for what lies ahead as well as nostalgia for what passed in the Old Year. So it was for 2007. It was a year of growth for me; having lost my father a little over a year ago it was also a year to adjust and to cope with loss.

Loss is a part of life and as such it is always interesting as a year winds its way to an end, to watch on TV or read in newspaper and magazine articles about the lives of celebrities, famous scientists, authors, politicians, etc. who we have lost during that year. So it was that I learned in December of the passing of Arthur Jones, the founder of the Nautilus exercise equipment back in August 2007.

Prior to becoming a realtor, I was a television producer. Many years ago I produced a program on Arthur Jones; focusing not on his revolutionary exercise equipment, but rather on the elephants housed at his huge ranch, called Jumbolair, in Ocala, Florida. Arthur had decided to start a haven for African elephants on his 350 acre ranch. Along with a collegue, we were flown in one of Arthur's planes to his ranch. He had a private runway long enough to handle a 747; so the name "Jumbolair" was appropriate for both his love of airplanes (and he owned several) as well as the elephants. Connecting the runway to the ranch was a covered walkway where a huge gorilla named Mickey was housed. Yes, besides the 98 elephants he owned, the ranch also was home to an assortment of wildlife, including about 3000 crocodiles and white rhino. The elephants were the main focus of my program. As their mothers had been culled when they were still very small, the elephants had to switch from their mother's milk to a diet that they would only have started when properly weaned. The end result was that the elephants had problems with their teeth and tusks; cavities would form! During the filmshoot, a veterinary dentist arrived and we filmed him and his team as they drilled and filled the cavities of a few sedated elephants.

Arthur was an interesting man; someone not to be toyed with. I have often wondered whatever became of him and his former young wife, Terri, as well as the elephants. Just found out that Terri, who was a Revlon model and herself a very accomplished aviator, is remarried and is devloping "Jumbolair" into an aviation related residential development. Amongst the first owners of this gated aviation estate community is John Travolta.

I would love to find out what happened to the animals, particularly the elephants and the gorilla, that once lived on the ranch. It is just fascinating how full circle life takes one and that Jumbolair has gone from being a wildlife haven to a specialized gated community under development.

As my New Year's resolution involves trips to the gym, I will use Arthur's Nautilus equipment and think back to his dreams that were and the new dreams that Terri is developing.

Here are some photos taken at Jumbolair:

In the first photo we are busy filming the elephants. In the second photo I am discussing a detail about our filmshoot with Arthur Jones.

Friday Staging Fieldtrip with Ardell DellaLoggia

On Fridays my wonderful broker, Ardell DellaLoggia takes fieldtrips to the listings of Brio realtors. She had already been out to see my latest Woodinville listing, a spacious 3340 sq ft 2-story home in the Reintree neighborhood, the previous Friday. Although the owner and I had gone through the house to prepare it prior to listing, Ardell felt that some additional staging was necessary, before an open House took place. I have been staging my listings for a number of years. With each listing, I normally re-arrange what is already in a house and/or I bring in a number of my own staging props. I have built up an eclectic collection of bric-a-brac over the years, which I re-use in my listings.

In the past I have shopped for some of my listings, but under the guidance of Ardell, shopping became an adventure! We first went back out to the house and did a quick walk through the house. Ardell held her arms out in a "penguin style" to see if any furniture pieces were creating obstructions. We moved some of the furniture out of the way. Then, Ardell looked at the overall color scheme of the house. The house was decorated in very neutral colors and we decided that some bright accent pieces were necessary. With a beautiful red maple in full color outside the front door, we tuned in to the warm colors of fall. Looking around, we saw that some of the furniture had cinnamon colored stripes in the fabric and a small rack with bottled fruits and vegetables in vinegar that I had used to add color to the kitchen, cemented the color scheme for the house.

We jumped into my car and headed into downtown Woodinville, where we did a whirlwind shopping trip to TJ Maxx, Target and World Market. At TJ Maxx, Ardell immediately spotted mult-colored checkered side plates, on sale for $2 each, that happened to be a perfect match for the area rug in the kitchen eat-in area. We found perfect celery hued hand towels for the powder room, a red vase, 2 prints, a jug, other ceramic plates and burnt orangey-cinnamon scatter cushions as well as perfect cups! Standing in line, several women commented on our beautiful color coordinated goodies and were curious if we were out on an early Christmas shopping exhibition. When told that we were using the items to stage a home, several people excitedly retold stories of their favorite home decorating TV shows! Our Target and World Market shopping proved to be equally productive and we headed back to my listing with at least 12 large shopping bags.

Ardell was great fun to shop with and taught me that it is best to select a color family for a particular house and stick with that color; spreading that same color family throughout the house. It certainly warmed up my listing and the owner loved the changes to her home. In fact, the owner loves the the decorative cushions so much that I might consider wrapping them up for her as a closing gift once the house sells. Now, all I need is some offers! Preferably, before Christmas!

It's always a great day in Woodinville, WA, (http://www.ci.woodinville.wa.us/) a great city located a few miles out of Seattle. And no wonder that its residents love living in Woodinville. There are great neighborhoods & homes, parks, shopping, movie theatres and restaurants,(http://www.herbfarm.com/) some of the Puget Sound area's best rated and most coveted schools (http://www.nsd.org/) plus an ever growing number of wineries! (http://www.ste-michelle.com/ http://www.columbiawinery.com/) The lifestyle combines country living with big city amenities.

And in this modern day utopia, there are people that still care for their fellow human beings. Take Lisa Norrgard for example. Lisa, an optician, is also an artist. When a space opened next door to her and her husband's thriving Woodinville practice, they decided to annex the space and turn it into an art gallery. (The Gallery at Norrgard's Optik) The result is a cheerful space where local Woodinville artists can display their artwork. But there is another reason for the art gallery; Lisa says that the gallery is the "completion of why we are here." The Norrgard's decided that their art gallery would exist to do some good in the community. The Norrgards decided that they would not charge the artists a commission when their artwork sells. Instead, the artists would donate a percentage (of their choice) of the sales proceeds to a charity. Response by local artists has been overwhelming and the gallery is filled with artwork. It is a wonderful space and also great for patients coming in for eye exams or having eyewear prescriptions filled to have paintings to focus on with their "new" eyes!

Attending a recent Woodinvlle Chamber of Commerce event, Lisa found a great cause for her art gallery; she learned of the plight that many severely handicapped children in Woodinville face as they reach the tender age of 18. Up until their 18th birthday, these children are cared for in a special home called A Children's Country Home.

Unfortunately, the home is not big enough, nor set up to continue to care for the children once they reach adulthood. For many of these medically fragile children, it means a future where they have no professional care givers. It is also very traumatic for the children to suddenly be separated from other children, and a home, that they had known since their early childhood.

Lisa immediately set to work to help benefit the Children's Country Home. It is estimated that it will cost approximately $3 million to purchase land and build a house that can be a home to these children for the rest of their lives. A home where they will continue to receive the best of care and be with their childhood companions. Lisa decided to kick-start the drive for the $3 million, through a benefit celebration and reception. The event will take place starting at 5 pm on December 8th. Tickets cost $10 each and there are fabulous raffle prizes.

It is wonderful that there are still people like Lisa Norrgard in this world that help make it a better place for all of us!
