blogging: 15 Quick SEO Tips for Real Estate Bloggers - 05/21/09 11:17 PM
Block Duplicate Content - With the nifty All In One SEO pack for Wordpress, you can easily set your category and archive pages to be noindex/follow… meaning that Google will follow the links to the individual articles, but not index those pages which will help guard against the duplicate content problem.  For those of you not running Wordpress, try turning off your archives, and not placing posts in more than one category.  Read more about: Multiple categories & Onsite Duplicate Content. Keyword Research Before You Post - This little tactic has helped me tremendously.  Before you get ready to hit publish, … (151 comments)

blogging: The Ultimate (& Practical) Guide To Optimizing Your RSS Feed (Part 1) - 09/02/08 10:02 AM
RSS is such an interesting technology.  It has truly spearheaded a complete mind shift in the way people design, look at, and interact with the internet.
When I first read an e-book in 2003 about this new RSS technology that was becoming more mainstream, I have to admit, it was a little fuzzy.  The only RSS readers available were software programs you had to download and install.  Only a few sites even published RSS feeds, and the few popular blogs that existed only had a handful of subscribers.  But even in my ignorance, I ran out to get a blog realizing … (45 comments)

blogging: Long Tail Keywords vs. Short Tail Keywords on Your Real Estate Blog - 04/22/08 05:19 PM
Mary McKnight wrote an interesting post on why she believes that the long tail does not work well for real estate bloggers. I found it to be an interesting read… but like so many of the “how to” real estate marketing blogs out there, I found it to be too one sided and unbalanced. It reminds me of the argument that has become classic in the real estate blogosphere: should you write for the search engines or write for readers? The answer is BOTH!!
By the way, Mary: you know I love ya, and I’m not trying to start an argument … (44 comments)

blogging: How I Sold My ActiveRain Profile for $6,750.00 - 11/16/07 11:01 AM
This will be my last post as Justin Smith of the Real Estate Tomato under this profile.  It was fun... but look for me to come back under a different profile real soon.

================
You heard it here folks.  Damion Foxworthy is now the proud new owner of my ActiveRain profile.  The story behind the sale follows...
I'm sure many of you have heard the controversy about the sale of MMORPG characters and goods.  It is quite an industry actually, complete with overseas sweatshops where workers will spend hours mining for gold in World of Warcraft, or building up … (244 comments)

blogging: The Real Estate Blog Balancing Act - 10/26/07 03:43 PM

This post was stirred on by a post from Joel Burslem over at RealEstateMarketingSecrets.com. He was writing about the death of the multi author blog, and it really got me thinking about local real estate blogs.
Joel pointed out that he is often overwhelmed by the multi author blogs simply because of the large amount of content. And to some extent I agree with him. One of the reasons I’m not a frequent visitor to the RainCityGuide and the BloodHoundBlog is because there is simply too much to read… it’s information overload.  Sure it’s fun to visit every once in … (36 comments)

blogging: How to Spice up Your Email Signature by Using Your Blog Feed - 10/16/07 03:44 PM
Syndicating your content is pretty important these days. My students often get overwhelmed when I tell them all the places they need to submit their blog to including social bookmarking sites, activerain, carnivals… the list goes on and on.
Things can get more complicated when you try to market your blog on and offline, and you can quickly get burned out with manually adding your blog to hundreds of different places.
Well, here’s an easy way to get your blog out to everyone that you converse with on a day to day basis through email. A banner in your email signature … (39 comments)

blogging: How to Avoid Suffering From Blogging & Social Media Overload - 10/05/07 11:07 AM
As we enter into the golden age of blogging, and the maturity of social media websites like Facebook, Linkedin, ActiveRain, and others.  I’ve begun to see a trend emerging among real estate professionals.  Many of them simply don’t care about social networking, reading other blogs, participating in a community, or contributing in any way.  Does anyone else see that?
In some respects I even see that happening in my own online experience.  The hundreds of feeds in my Bloglines reader just don’t do it for me like they used to.  I broke my addiction to points on ActiveRain, and I’m totally … (16 comments)

blogging: Is Your Market Over Saturated With Other Bloggers? - 10/04/07 03:07 PM
I’ve heard some talk lately from discouraged real estate bloggers that can’t seem to rank well in the search engines. They try blogging for a few weeks and then give up often times assuming that there are simply too many competing blogs and websites in their market area. In most markets, this is simply not the case!
Yes, it is true that there are a few places around the country that have fierce competition. Those would be in places like: Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco, Florida, and a few others…
But for the most part, there are very few markets that are … (22 comments)

blogging: How to Start a Local Real Estate Blog -- 5. Time to Launch! - 05/02/07 02:41 PM
We’re almost there! Make sure you have these 6 things in order before you get ready to launch your blog.
Write at least 3-4 posts before you launch. People are visiting your blog because they want to read what you’ve wrote… you don’t want to leave a bad impression, you want to create loyal visitors that will come around regularly.It is very important to link to other blogs when you first start writing. This is extremely important as your first readers will most likely be other bloggers, and the best way to create that first flow of incoming links is by … (8 comments)

blogging: Is Creating Creative Content a Completely Contrived Curse of Crazy Conspirators? - 03/19/07 10:41 AM
At the risk of stepping on a couple of toes, I’m going to post a quote from a comment that was made recently in a real estate community website. I was in an argument about reciprocal linking, and the commenter with the opposing view had this to say:
“Let’s not go down the road that “good content” will generate large numbers of one-way links. By and large, the world is not standing at the ready to link to the content of an agent broker site, based on some sort of remarkable content. Anyone who promises that is misleading their readers. It … (2 comments)

blogging: We Have a Winner!!! Teri Isner Hits 100k Points! - 10/30/06 08:51 PM

It took a little longer than expected because of the changes made by the AR guys over to the new point system the night after I posted my 100k point update. Previously, 3 blogs per day could be awarded with points giving each member a possible 600 base points per day just from blog posts. Now, only 10 posts per week are awarded points. So, my original projections were a little off, and it has taken a few extra days... but we finally have a winner!!! Teri Isner! Congratulations!!!
Little surprise really. She has been on track to be the … (7 comments)

I've been eagerly waiting to see which Active Rain member will make it to 100,000 point first.
Let's see who's in the race, and review their background and point strategy:
Top 3 contenders:
# 1. Teri Isner - Current Total: 90,853

* Conclusion: watch out!  With her consistent power blogging strategy, she is the favored to win.
# 2.  Jacqulyn Richey - Current Total: 89,780

* Member Since: 6/28/06
* Very large number … (8 comments)

blogging: More Useful Tools Recently Released by Google - 10/05/06 04:56 PM
Since I'm on a Google kick today... I thought I'd mention a couple more tools that Google recently came out with:
1.  Add widgets to your website. (or as Google calls them: "gadgets")  This is my favorite, and is especially useful for the person that wants to add all kinds of cool tools onto their website with minimal effort.  There are over 1,200 of them, and they range from stock tickers, to news aggregators, to mini games.  With a simple cut and paste, you could be playing a mini game of pacman on your homepage.  There are so many options with this … (1 comments)

blogging: Do You Ping Your Blogs? - 10/05/06 04:17 PM
"pinging" in the context of blogging is a way to tell the different websites that compile blog posts that you have added new content to your blog.  This  would include sites like technorati or  feedburner, and other similar blog post aggregators.
In the way of an update on my post earlier today about the new Google Blog Search Tool, Google just announced today that they will allow you to ping them with your blog's URL address if it is not already included in thier index.  First you may want to do a search on the Google Blog Search tool to … (4 comments)

blogging: Google Launches New Blogger Friendly Search Service - 10/05/06 11:20 AM

Google has just launched a specialized Blog only search portal.  http://blogsearch.google.com  From what I can see it looks like a very cool way to search for blog content.  So often blog content can get watered down and not rank well in the standard serps.  It seems like Google is trying to change that.  All of the search results come directly from blogs all over the internet.
There were some people that speculated that Google would only include results from it's Blogger.com blogs, but Google seems to be clear that they will include content from any Blog that has an … (5 comments)
