webmaster: R.I.P. - Reciprocal Linking - Deceased 1999-2006 - 11/30/06 01:24 PM

Is anyone as sick as I am of receiving reciprocal linking requests in the form of spam emails?  I read a fantastic article by Mike Banks Valentine of SearchEngineOptimism.com.  Yes the article is a bit controversial, but that's what makes it a fun read!  The title is: "Reciprocal Linking is Dead"
Here are some excerpts that I thought were excellent:
"I will link, but I will not "swap links" with anyone now. I require content in the form of articles, press releases and news, quotes, testimonials or some form of content."
"What was it that ruined strict reciprocal links for … (9 comments)

webmaster: Review of Pubcon and some Predictions by Randfish of SEOmoz.org - 11/21/06 11:07 AM
One of my favorite SEO/Webmaster blogs is SEOMoz.org.  The content these guys put out is outstanding.
The founder: Randfish recently posted on the pubcon 2006, and based on some of the things he learned, he made some predictions for the next 6 months.  (You'll even notice a mention of Zillow, which shows me the reach and impact it has made in the seo/webmaster world)
Here are the ones I thought were most interesting with my comments below:
Google's Webmaster Central will offer full link information about your site (like the old link command before they broke it)  *I'm curious to see … (10 comments)

webmaster: Marketing on YouTube? - 11/16/06 03:49 PM

I just read a really interesting piece through a newsletter subscription that I have through Internet Marketing Secrets.  It's SEO buff Michael Cambell's weekly newsletter.
He's always been big on affiliate marketing, and adsense revenue strategies through solid SEO techniques.  I used to be a big time SEO geek that would read anything I could get my hands on, but lately I've been so busy, my affiliate marketing side business has been at a stand still.
But something about Michael's newsletter hit me... maybe it was the title: "1,200 New Visitors in 7 days, all treat, no tricks"
...I read … (10 comments)

You can refresh the page to get him to speak again.  His name is promo and he was created by the gang over at Search Engine Worshops
Here is a quote from their site:
"Turn up your computer sound and click your refresh button to hear Promo, the Search Engine Robot giving you some general SEO gossip. He is libel to say anything, so be prepared!"
One minute, he'll throw you some … (2 comments)

webmaster: What is Page Rank, and Will it Effect My Website Ranking? - 09/25/06 11:40 AM
Through some of my other SEO posts, I've had quite a few questions about Google's page Rank (PR). What is it? How does it work? Why don't I have any? Does it affect my site's ranking?, etc. What is it?: In short, PR is a system that Google uses to weigh the importance of a website. It is based almost entirely on incoming links, and the importance of those links. Each website is given a "rank", 0-10. The easiest way to see your rank and the rank of others is to install a toolbar on your browser. You can download them here: … (8 comments)

webmaster: A Rare Look Into the Mind of Google... - 09/22/06 12:47 AM
I came across a great post today on some SEO tips. It compiles some of the best quotes from the famous Matt Cutts. Matt has worked at Google for a while now, and is known for his SEO prowess. When he speaks, people listen because he holds the keys to eternal Search Engine Nirvana... The Google Algorithm keys that is. If he doesn't like you, you can say goodbye to your online presence.Anyways, this post is great because the quotes by Matt contain some rarely given insight into the mind of the Google monster.A couple of excerpts:

webmaster: Do you Pay for Search Engine Positioning? - 09/19/06 11:53 AM
As a followup to my post earlier today, I wanted to write about the ins and outs of paying to have your website listed in the search engines. I haven't met too many individual real estate agents that use pay per click, but the ones that do seem to do pretty well if they know what they're doing. When you visit a popular search engine like Google or Yahoo, you'll notice that the first few results for a search are usually in a special box called sponsored links. The advertisers in this section are paying every time a person clicks on their … (31 comments)

webmaster: Microsoft's new Pay Per Click Service on Live.com - 09/19/06 10:00 AM
I just received a gift card from Microsoft for $30! It is definitely the first time I've ever received anything free from 800 lb. Gorilla software giant in Redmond...We just started on their new pay per click service about 4 months go. It's called Adcenter and it seeks to turn some profit for Microsoft. The only problem is, they are about 7 years too late. Google has all but cornered the search engine market with 70-80% of all searches. Our budget for Google is close to $1,500/month, and using the same keywords, our budget on Adcenter is only about $15. So far, … (4 comments)

webmaster: Post Blog Content onto your Website Through RSS - 09/18/06 02:07 PM
Do you find that your website lacks a certain stickiness? Do you only have information about yourself, contact information and links on your site? Are you blogging yet?
If the answer to those questions is yes, you might want to consider making a few changes to your website that would include adding the content from your blog directly to your website. This will allow your visitors to see the current things you are writing about without actually having to visit your blog. They could read the headlines on your home page and decide whether or not it is something they are interested … (7 comments)

webmaster: How to add Subscription links to Your Active Rain Posts - 09/17/06 01:28 AM
Ok, I've been getting this question alot lately...  "Justin, what are those links at the bottom of all your posts??"  In case you haven't noticed, they look like this:
del.icio.us  |  Digg it  |  Furl  |  Technorati  |  Spurl  |  Yahoo
They are at the bottom of every article that I write.  They are links to add  that particular post to a favorites list.  Well, sort of... each one of the above services is a little different.
del.icio.us is an online bookmarking site Digg is a site that lets you submit articles and blog posts for people to vote on.Furl is a combination of both of … (13 comments)

webmaster: Healthy Website Linking Practices - 09/13/06 09:07 AM
