louisville: Kentucky Supreme Court overturns Sex Offender Law - 10/01/09 09:51 PM
Three years ago the Kentucky legislature passed a law banning convicted sex offenders from living within 1000 feet of schools, playgrounds, and day care centers. Today, the Supreme Court threw out that legislation by a 5-2 vote. According to the AP, the justices ruled, "the law is punitive because lawmakers applied it retroactively to sex offenders convicted before the restrictions were imposed."

The St James Court Art Show begins Friday Oct 2nd and will continue through Sunday October 4th. This year marks the 53rd time that artists have gathered for the annual event that was voted Best Art Show in the Nation during 3 of the last 6 years.
This year, over 750 artists from throughout North America will be displaying their works for an expected 300,000 patrons. In fact, more people come to Louisville for this event than for the Kentucky Derby. This month's edition of Louisville Magazine was packaged with a spectacular EATS guide. While I haven't had time to digest all of the restaurant info, one of the items I was most thrilled to see was the "Taste Calendar." Louisville Tasting Events are generally hosted by charities and feature amazing food and drink from a wide-variety of local restaurants, cafes, breweries, wineries, and distilleries. The fact that an event benefits a worthy cause is icing on the cake.

Marks Feed Store is one of my favorite places to eat. Being pre-disposed to all things barbecue, Mark's is a natural fit. However, more than any other place, Mark's seems to have a near perfect combination of great food, atmosphere, and affordability. Our Story I have no comprehension of what it would be like to go through life without sight. I have excellent vision and have never even had to wear glasses or contacts. My children on the other hand are a different story. They were born 15 weeks early and developed ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity). In an attempt to prevent complete blindness, doctor's performed laser surgery to stop the improper growth of blood vessels.

$8000 Tax Credit History The current $8000 tax credit has been motivating first time home buyers to start looking for homes. However, there is one perceived problem with the program. The money is not available until after closing. This means buyers still have to come up with a minimum down payment of 3.5 %. This requirement prevents many from taking advantage of the current market.
Kentucky recently addressed this issue by creating a $4500 Down Payment Assistance program through KHC. Again, this excludes many Louisville area buyers because of income limitations.

The 2009 Kentucky Derby Festival Balloon Glow was a stunning success. We were among the thousands of people who gathered at the fairgrounds Friday evening to watch the Hot Air balloon teams light up the night sky. The high winds that had threatened to prevent people from going on to the fields died down around nightfall. We were able to walk around and see the balloons up close.

Louisville's Dare to Care hosted their 11th annual Taste of Derby Festival last night at Slugger Field. At the last minute (literally) my wife and I decided to attend. I really had no idea what to expect, but was blown-away by the event. From the food and drinks to the items donated for silent auction, this was a first-class event that earned itself an annual placement on our calendar.
Almost 40 restaurants showed up and prepared sample dishes for the crowd. I not sure we made it to each booth, but we came close. Morton's The Steakhousedefinitely gets the nod for best of the best. Their steaks and crab-cakes were incredible. … (3 comments)

One day last month I turned on the TV and was disturbed to see that the picture was horrid. The red was out of sync with the blue and green. With football season fast approaching, this was a very serious problem. After the initial panic wore off, I was struck by a moment of Zen. This is the perfect excuse to get a new TV.

General Electric (GE) has announced its intent to spin-off all of its Consumer and Industrial business. This news comes a little less than 2 months after the original announcement that the Louisville-based Appliances division would be split off and sold. In a statement released to the AP, CEO Jeff Immelt says, "As we explored our options for appliances, it became clear that the fastest, most efficient step we could take in completing the transformation of our industrial portfolio would be to focus on a possible spin-off of the entire unit."
