louisville: Kentucky Supreme Court overturns Sex Offender Law - 10/01/09 09:51 PM
Three years ago the Kentucky legislature passed a law banning convicted sex offenders from living within 1000 feet of schools, playgrounds, and day care centers. Today, the Supreme Court threw out that legislation by a 5-2 vote. According to the AP, the justices ruled, "the law is punitive because lawmakers applied it retroactively to sex offenders convicted before the restrictions were imposed." As a parent, the possibility of a sexual predator harming one of my children is mind-numbingly terrifying. It is part of the reason I do not use their names in public settings online. However, I have a hard time

louisville: How's the Louisville Real Estate Market? - Sept 28,2009 Version - 09/28/09 12:22 AM
Louisville real estate conditions are so fluid I considered adding a time stamp in the title. Month-to-month variances in each area can be huge and I expect it to get more interesting as the year ends and the $8000 first time home buyer credit nears its expiration date. I'd really like to tell you the water is fine and everyone should jump in the real estate pool, but you really need... The Straight Truth The bottom is behind us. That being said, we are still in a trough and the recovery will not be quick. Lending standards and appraisal standards have

louisville: Louisville Named to Money's Top Places to Retire - 09/11/09 11:29 PM
Louisville is 20th Best Place to Retire Citing the addition of bike lanes on city streets, a thriving arts district, and a plethora of things to do downtown and by the river, Money Magazine ranked Louisville Kentucky in their Top 25 Best Places to Retire. Rating criteria included housing affordability, 'bang for your buck', and local ammenities. Based on these requirements, it is obvious why Louisville is on the list. With average Louisville home prices hovering just over $150,000, residents can definitely focus more of their money on enjoying amenities the city has to offer. Among the locations of interest were Louisville Slugger Field, the

louisville: Louisville Magazine's Calendar of Tasting Events - 09/01/09 10:24 PM
This month's edition of Louisville Magazine was packaged with a spectacular EATS guide. While I haven't had time to digest all of the restaurant info, one of the items I was most thrilled to see was the "Taste Calendar." Louisville Tasting Events are generally hosted by charities and feature amazing food and drink from a wide-variety of local restaurants, cafes, breweries, wineries, and distilleries. The fact that an event benefits a worthy cause is icing on the cake. My wife and I attended our first Taste of Derby Festival earlier this year and had a great time. Since, then we've either

louisville: Mark's Feed Store Louisville Kentucky - 08/02/09 11:13 PM
Marks Feed Store is one of my favorite places to eat. Being pre-disposed to all things barbecue, Mark's is a natural fit. However, more than any other place, Mark's seems to have a near perfect combination of great food, atmosphere, and affordability. It is one of the few places I have eaten at more than once in a single day and truly enjoyed each time. As with any restaurant, good food is the key to success. Mark's specializes in barbecue and that's about all they do. Since they don't worry about trying to be all things to all people, they can

louisville: A World Without Sight - 07/17/09 11:36 PM
Our Story I have no comprehension of what it would be like to go through life without sight. I have excellent vision and have never even had to wear glasses or contacts. My children on the other hand are a different story. They were born 15 weeks early and developed ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity). In an attempt to prevent complete blindness, doctor's performed laser surgery to stop the improper growth of blood vessels. Despite later having Lens Replacement surgery (I didn't know you could do that on a 5-yr old either), my son has 20/80 vision in one-eye and 20/800 in

louisville: Divorce is an Option - 06/29/09 10:18 PM
The beginning of a relationship is always exciting. Deciding what to reveal and what to hold back. Becoming less reserved as we figure out that our personalities align. Sharing hopes and dreams knowing we can achieve them together. And finally, forming a union to do just that. Unfortunately, not all unions are perfect. Despite our best intentions, one side or the other ends up feeling neglected, let-down or, even worse, deceived. Sometimes these feelings are valid. Sometimes they are the result of misperception. Either way, the problem must be solved quickly. If avoided, it will fester and grow. Taking on a

louisville: $8000 First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit - How the Modified Version Affects Louisville Home Buyers - 05/29/09 11:23 PM
$8000 Tax Credit History The current $8000 tax credit has been motivating first time home buyers to start looking for homes. However, there is one perceived problem with the program. The money is not available until after closing. This means buyers still have to come up with a minimum down payment of 3.5 %. This requirement prevents many from taking advantage of the current market. Kentucky recently addressed this issue by creating a $4500 Down Payment Assistance program through KHC. Again, this excludes many Louisville area buyers because of income limitations. What the industry has been clamoring for is a change to

louisville: Louisville's Balloon Glow Lights Up the Night - 04/25/09 08:32 PM
The 2009 Kentucky Derby Festival Balloon Glow was a stunning success. We were among the thousands of people who gathered at the fairgrounds Friday evening to watch the Hot Air balloon teams light up the night sky. The high winds that had threatened to prevent people from going on to the fields died down around nightfall. We were able to walk around and see the balloons up close. We arrived early and staked out prime viewing territory against the fence while sampling some of the food. My wife and I are suckers for funnel cakes, so we definitely had to

louisville: Taste of Derby Festival is an Annual Must-Do Event in Louisville - 04/23/09 12:33 AM
Louisville's Dare to Care hosted their 11th annual Taste of Derby Festival last night at Slugger Field. At the last minute (literally) my wife and I decided to attend. I really had no idea what to expect, but was blown-away by the event. From the food and drinks to the items donated for silent auction, this was a first-class event that earned itself an annual placement on our calendar. Almost 40 restaurants showed up and prepared sample dishes for the crowd. I not sure we made it to each booth, but we came close. Morton's The Steakhousedefinitely gets the nod for best of the best. Their steaks and crab-cakes were incredible.

louisville: Louisville Investment Homes - Why you should buy one (or more) now. - 04/20/09 10:45 PM
While the local housing market has not suffered to the extent of other areas, Louisville investors still have a tremendous opportunity to take advantage of the current situation. By purchasing investment homes now, a saavy individual can set himself or herself up with solid returns for years to come. Four factors are particularly favorable for investors right now. These include 1) an increased supply of homes, 2) an increased demand for rental homes, 3) low interest rates and 4) oncoming inflation. louisville: Andy’s TV Sales and Service – Solving Problems and Crushing Dreams - 09/28/08 10:27 PM
One day last month I turned on the TV and was disturbed to see that the picture was horrid. The red was out of sync with the blue and green. With football season fast approaching, this was a very serious problem. After the initial panic wore off, I was struck by a moment of Zen. This is the perfect excuse to get a new TV. My wife quickly concurred and insisted that 1) the new TV mount on the wall and 2) it shouldn't be smaller than the one we have now (52"). Reassured that I was married to the right

louisville: Kentucky Derby Record Holder - Secretariat - 05/03/08 01:03 AM
Certain sports records are controversial (60, 61*, 70 or 73*). Others are impressive in that the represent consistent above-average performance over time (Ripken's 2,632). But, some are truly special. They are the result of an awe-inspiring performance that we mortals cannot fathom seeing repeated (DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, Wilt's 100 point night, Larson's perfect game). Among the last set of records, is Secretariat's 2:24 world record time at the 1973 Belmont Stakes. The race is legendary and his 31-length victory remains unparalleled in horseracing history. Watch it on Youtube What is less commonly known is that Secretariat also holds
