Sights from Virginia Tech- War Memorial Pylons - 02/16/09 05:55 PM

I decided to share some of Virginia Tech's most notable sights around campus. If youv'e ever seen anything about my school, it'll probably be one of these buildings.
This post is about the War Memorial Pylons. The building began in 1951 and was finished by 1961 when they were officially dedicated to the school from Virginia Tech alumni. Each pylon has the names of alumni (424 total) who have died in service to our country. The cenotaph in the center has the names of the eight alumni who have received the Medal of Honor. Each pylon (of which there are … (2 comments)

They can do what?! - 02/15/09 11:48 PM
Friday night I had a dream that I was captured by the government for speaking out against them. It wasn't a pleasant dream needless to say. And no, I haven't read 1984 anytime recently. So today I'm looking through one of my favorite websites, Fark.com. If you've never visited, it's a reader submitted news-site. Beside each sotry is a tag for what type of story it is, ie Hero, Scary, Funny, Obvious, etc. Go chek it out. Anyways. I come across an article with the Scary tag and this description:
The government can videotape people on private property without a warrant … (5 comments)

Gun rights affected by stimulus package- with link to stimulus package - 02/15/09 07:33 PM

Apparently, somewhere in this stimulus bill is a nice little section saying the government wants to create an electronic copy of my health records. "What could be so bad about that?" you might ask. Aside from the fact that it has NOTHING TO DO WITH AN ECONOMIC STIMULUS.... Sure it's good when you're states away and you have an emergency- instant medical records access. Of course that's based on working internet access at the time.... And even though identity theft is such a big problem, we should totally allow our medical records to be put into some massive database. But … (26 comments)

No, you can have a coke! - 02/15/09 05:07 PM

Here's a bit of humor to brighten up your day! Without a doubt, this is one of the best examples of poor customer service and it is hilarious. A friend of mine showed it to the company he interned for this summer and they added it as part of their customer service training. After you watch this you'll probably find yourself muttering "RUDE" and "SA-KURITY!" under your breath to any irritating people you deal with during the week.

Enjoy!

Why your kids should go to Virginia Tech - 02/12/09 10:41 PM

Your kid is a junior in high school. This summer you'll be college shopping if you haven't already started. You know nothing about Virginia Tech but it should be on your list. Why?

We've got history.  We were founded in Blacksburg, VA as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, a land-grant military school, in 1872. Aside from Texas A&M, we're the only other non-military school in the country that has all four branches of the military still represented. When we received accredidation in 1923, we droppped the four year Corps of Cadets requirement to two years. Today it is no … (10 comments)

Conservative Political Action Conference- Feb 26-28 - 02/12/09 02:00 PM

We had our weekly College Republicans meeting last night. Amid debate about the disaster called the bailout, that sneaky bit about a health records database and an all CR range day (which I can't wait for), we brought up going to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). They mentioned it last semester when they talked about the Americans For Prosperity conference. For me, the CPAC falls on my sorority formals... but I feel it's a much better use of my time/money to talk to the people who will be changing the future of this country than getting dressed up to … (2 comments)

True Colors- Which one are you? - 02/11/09 02:41 PM

My senior seminar class is starting on our Certified Apartment Manager designation project. We're divided up into 8 groups. Before we were divided though, we were required to take the True Colors Personality Test. They explained this test would help us to interact with our group members. I thought it wa just another stupid personality test that my friends like to post on Myspace. Needless to say, I now look at the people I know in my life and try to figure out what colors they are. I've had friends take this test and it completely explains why we do/don't … (1 comments)

Green in multifamily - 02/11/09 12:10 PM

I'll make no bones about saying I'm not in the green movement to save the environment or reduce my carbon footprint (which by the way is ridiculous, North America absorbs as much carbon as it emits). There are a lot of money saving techniques to being green, however, and I'm a fan of saving money. I suppose I'm what you'd call hard green.
If you're not at least considering 'greening' up your property, you're already way behind the curve. More and more people are demanding greener, more sustainable apartment communities. There's the usual recycling program, using low VOC paints, using … (3 comments)

You went to Vegas??? - 02/09/09 11:42 PM
I have returned to blogging, finally away from those awful things at school called final exams ::shudders:: (I've never been a good test taker. Why I can't just build something or write a paper...)
"You went to Vegas??" is the response I get lately when people ask where I've been (as if they weren't stalking me on facebook). My good friend Mike and I went out to Las Vegas for last week's (Feb 2-4) Student Housing Conference put on by the National Apartment Association. It was our first time at the Venetian/Palazzo and woah. Really nice. Though not quite as nice … (5 comments)
