If you had to describe the ideal place to raise happy, healthy childern in a safe environment, Southern Pines and Pinehurst would come pretty close. In addition to great schools, the area offers tons of wholesome activities for kids of all ages. It's small enough that children can't be anonymous because there's a whole community watching over them in a sense. At the same time, the area has grown to the point that children can stay active and engaged.
