A Different Type of Incentive... - 06/30/08 04:37 PM
With the down turn in the real estate market, it is not unusual to see sellers offering up 'incentives' if you buy their house. Some that I have seen: a Porsche, a Mercedes, a Country Club membership, a pool/tennis club membership and the most common one, an offer to buy down the interest rate on your loan.
Today I saw the strangest of all on MSN. After a year of trying to sell her house in Florida, one owner has offered the house at $340,000 or for another $500,000 you get the owner, a single mother, too! The link to the story (3 comments)
Ardently Greening Northern Virginia - 06/27/08 03:20 PM
Today, two local Northern Virginia papers came out with articles about 'green' remodeling companies which both featured my husband's company, Ardently Green! My husband, Bob Weatherwax, along with his partners started this company in response to many homeowner requests to help them make their homes more energy efficient. Their primary company, Ardent Homes, does home remodeling in the Northern Virginia area. The first article was published in the Washington Business Journal and was written by Vandana Sinha. The link to the article is: http://washington.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2008/06/30/story18.html The other article appeared in the Washington Examiner and was written by Whitney Blake. the link to (2 comments)
Leesburg Canine Country Club - 06/25/08 03:42 PM
Thanks to Lauren Shifflet, Owner of Leesburg Canine Country Club, for getting in touch with me about my recent Reston Blog, http://activerain.com/blogsview/560718/What-are-my-Favorite. Lauren commented that she had many great memories of living in Reston. She also mentioned that she left Reston, fairly recently, to start a new venture, The Leesburg Canine Country Club. I am always happy to pass on information about different recreational activities in the area. TLCCC is an off-leash social club that meets at Falcon Ridge Recreation Center. This one sounds like great entertainment for both you and your 4-pawed pals! You can check out their website at: (1 comments)
What are my Favorite Things About Living in Reston, Virginia? What are Yours? - 06/23/08 09:19 AM
I am a life-long resident of Reston and would not change it for the world. What is it that makes Reston so special? I have assembled a list below of some of the things that come to mind. I know that I did not cover everything, but I gave it a shot. My friends and neighbors: We actually know all of our neighbors and celebrate life's events with them. My oldest told me she won't have a party if we go out of town because at least 6 nearby neighbors would call us on our cell phones! They help us celebrate (9 comments)
Learn Something New - 06/23/08 08:20 AM
After spending the past year working with my daughter to get in to college, I felt like it would be fun to take some college classes again. Alas, with my family and work schedule, that is not likely to happen anytime soon. Yesterday, I participated for the first time in an event sponsored by One Day University. I initially found out about this event from an ad in the Washington Post.
One Day University offers one-day, no homework classes on interesting topics taught by top-notch professors from amazing univerisites. For just over $200 I spent the day at one of (2 comments)
Avoid Foreclosure in Northern Virginia--Clinics Today, June 21, 2008 - 06/21/08 09:11 AM

Getting Your House Ready to Sell Series: Help! I have been in my house forever! - 06/20/08 04:17 PM
As I knock on the door, I notice the lovely, well-tended and mature gardening around the front door. I meet my potential client and I can tell they are more nervous about the listing appointment than usual. It turns out they have been in their house for 30+ years. This is not an unusual situation. The question is always, 'where and how do I begin?' There is an organization that formed in 2002 called National Association of Senior Move Managers. This organization provides resources to help seniors make housing transitions. Sometimes the preparation can be overwhelming, and having a 'manager' can (0 comments)
Hot Fun in the Summertime...Keep the Kids Safe at the Pool! - 06/18/08 12:48 PM
Last weekend there were several drownings in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area and I don't want to see anymore. Now that school is out and the pools are open, it is critical that we all remember pool safety rules. I was a lifeguard growing up, and I find that to be one summer job I just cannot let go! Some of these rules are obvious, but some are ones that I think don't get enough attention. Most of these rules pertain to private pools. Always respect all of the rules of your public pool--they are there for a reason! Teach Your (0 comments)
Getting Your House Ready to Sell Series: What to do with an empty room? - 06/17/08 02:34 PM
There are those out there who actually have empty rooms in their houses. When you go to sell, it is probably a good idea to 'stage' these rooms so that potential buyers can get a sense of how they might use the room and how furniture will fit in the room. One of my clients had a 'junk room' instead of a third bedroom. Since she was a single woman and her second bedroom was used as her office, I felt like it was important to show this room to its best advantage as a spare bedroom. The first thing I asked (0 comments)
Fresh Produce and More...every day of the Week in Northern Virgnina! - 06/17/08 10:55 AM
Saturday Morning I made my almost-12 year old run errands with me. Our last stop was at the Lake Anne Village local farmers market in Reston. I could tell by his gait as we left the car that he was less than eager. He had a blast! Fresh food, snacks, plants and more...what's not to like? He now told me he wants to go every week. I told him that in our area (Fairfax County, Eastern Loudoun areas of Northern Virgnina) we are fortunate to have one of these markets almost every day. Here is a list of local markets you might (2 comments)
The Thing that REALLY Bugs me! - 06/15/08 06:30 PM
I was driving along today behind a car when I noticed the driver was smoking. So what...their car, their business. That was until they tossed the smoldering butt of their cigarette onto the street. It irked me, but what can you do? And then it happened again!
Why is it that perfectly respectable people find that it is okay to litter if it is a cigarette butt? I doubt that any of these fine, upstanding (I suppose) citizens would ever consider tossing a finished soda can out the window, but they think nothing of tossing out a burning piece of (4 comments)
It is Time to Buy! - 06/14/08 01:13 PM
It is time for buyers to buy. I know that many of you have homes that you first must sell, but those of you who are fortunate enough to be able to buy without selling need to act. Why, you ask, when prices continue to drop?First off, there will come a time when they stop. Unfortunately for the buyer who is trying to play the market, you won't know that the market has hit bottom until it starts to creep back up. Secondly, the longer you wait, the longer you go without the tax benefit. If you have not done the math (0 comments)
Tim Russert...You will be Missed - 06/13/08 03:17 PM
I just heard the news that Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press,” is dead of a heart attack. He was only 58. If you are not a political junkie, like I am, you probably think it is strange that I am writing this post. If, on the other hand, you enjoy switching between conservative and liberal stations just to see how differently they interpret events, you are probably feeling the same shock and sadness I am right now. Tim was like a friend I saw every morning while I had my coffee and (11 comments)

Getting Your House Ready to Sell Series: Deal with the Paint Cans! - 06/08/08 03:29 PM
I was walking with a friend today and lamenting the fact that my husband decided yesterday was the perfect day to sort through our many cans of paint. Yesterday, it was close to 100 degrees in the garage! I bring this up because part of the reason we have so many different cans of paint--besides the fact that I am a serial room-color-changer--is because as a Realtor® I am often the last resort for sellers who need to get the paints out of their garage. Most movers won't take paint cans, they can't be thrown away (without drying them out first) and many (1 comments)
Getting Your House Ready to Sell Series: The Closets - 06/04/08 04:22 PM
My clients often ask me if they should empty the closets before marketing their homes. Honestly, buyers don't expect your closets to be empty--if the closets are, they are going to know that there is no way that you lived in the house that way. They want to be able to imagine how the house might appear if they were living in the house. Actually, let me modify that to say: they want to see how the house might appear if they were living in the house and instantly gave up all of their bad habits (if they started putting things away neatly, (7 comments)
Fun Things to Do in Fairfax County, Virginia in June! - 06/03/08 04:38 PM
This is a great time of year to attend local festivals and there are a couple of good ones coming up in June. The weekend of June 8th and 9th, plan to attend the Celebrate Fairfax! at the Fairfax Government Center. This festival is always well attended and has great headliner bands. Some of the bands appearing this year include: OK Go, Bowling for Soup, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Emerson Drive. More information about this event can be found at: http://www.celebratefairfax.org/index.asp?sid=1. Another of these is the Taste of the Town.
