FSBO--Are Your Emotions Getting in the Way of Your Sale? - 03/25/11 03:49 PM
When it comes time to sell a house, many of us consider doing it ourselves. After all, who knows and appreciates our home better than the person who has been tending it all these years? There are many technical reasons that I would encourage you to seek the professional guidance of a Realtor® (pricing, preparation, safety, marketing just to name a few), but there are a couple of emotional reasons, too.
No one, least of all a buyer, cares how much money you need to get out of the transaction It is very difficult to be objective about your own … (5 comments)

Why You Should Never Text and Drive--a Reminder - 03/23/11 05:10 PM
Every once in awhile, I think there is value in reminding ourselves how small things can have big consequences. This documentary, by AT&T, is well worth watching and sharing. It is a grim reminder of why texting while driving should NEVER happen.
I will be sharing it with my teenagers...and keeping these images in my own head. There is nothing so important that it can't wait until you are at a safe place.
Please drive safely and put the phone away.

Sellers: You Owe It To Yourself to Ask This Question - 03/23/11 09:53 AM
You have prepared your home for sale. Your Realtor® listed it in the MLS. People come to see it, so you feel like it is priced reasonably, but after several weeks, there hasn't been any serious interest. Is it something you are doing or just a slow market? This fall and winter, I saw perfectly good homes that were well prepared and well priced sit on the market. The truth is that it is very competitive out there and there are fewer serious and well-qualified buyers out there than we saw in the past. Those who are out there are both serious … (1 comments)

Dear Holly, We prepared our house, kept it clean, priced it right and got it under contract yesterday! We are very excited and want to know what we have to do now. Can you tell us what our next steps are? Thanks, Excited Sellers

We've been infested! The Tiny Black Ants Are Back... - 03/17/11 07:48 AM
Some people know that Spring has arrived when the days become longer; I know  it is here when the tiny black ants begin appearing in my kitchen!
These ants are a major annoyance! They might disappear for a day or so, only to reappear with a vengeance. All of the talk about the over abundance of chemicals in our lives has me trying to control the infestation without sprays (although I did spray the exterior of kitchen windows last week in desperation!). I have little ant traps scattered about. The theory with these traps is that the ants will eat the … (4 comments)

CORRECTION TO LOCATION--Restonians: Let Fairfax County Know How You Want to Get to the Metro - 03/11/11 06:15 PM
The Tysons Metrorail Stations Access Management Study (TMSAMS) Advisory Group will be holding a series of meetings to determine how theCommunity plans to access the four  new Silver Line Metro Station. These stations will not have long-term parking as an option, so the accesiblity for bus, pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be critical.
If you, or your family, has plans to use the new stations (I know we do!), plan to come to one of the community meetings or let the county know that you would like to participate in an upcoming survey.
The people that I have spoken to in Reston … (0 comments)

Spring Cleaning: How to get rid of all those books - 03/08/11 09:52 AM
Whether motivated by the prospect of listing your home, or just ready to do away with some of the clutter, almost all of us participate in the activity known as 'Spring Cleaning.' The urge hit me Sunday morning when a wayward glance at my cookbook shelves alerted me that it was time to sort and discard those cast-off cookbooks. By the time I was done, I had about 8 cookbooks that needed to find new homes. I could have tossed them in my ever-present 'give-away' pile, but, as a book lover, I have this need to pass my books on to … (14 comments)

Active Rain Blog Brings National Exposure - 03/04/11 05:08 PM
I got an email earlier today from Bob Stewart, Active Rain, congratulating me on my mentioin in a new Washington Post article and thanking me for mentioning Active Rain, too.
I had almost forgotten about the interview for the article. Last weekend I headed off to Savannah, Georgia to meet my college girlfriends. Waiting for them to arrive, I made myself comfortable on a bench in front of the fountain in Forsyth Park (the one in the picture to the right which I took while sitting there).  As I enjoyed the sunshine, I received a call from a real estate reporter, … (68 comments)

This is a great way to start your Friday! If you need a good belly laugh, play this video of the laughing baby. I hope this helps make your Friday lighter. I especially like when he laughs so hard that his legs lift off the sofa.
When was the last time that you laughed with such abandon? Why not make it part of your Friday resolution to laugh this hard every day? Enjoy!

Your Best Negotiating Tool: Bite Your Tongue! - 03/02/11 06:51 AM
I am a fixer. A first born, type-A, former Management Consultant; find me a problem and I will set about fixing it. Over the years, I have learned that in many things, it is better to take a seat, watch the show, and then react. Nowhere is this more evident than in negotiations. Sometimes, during a challenging negotiation, I feel like we are playing a game of tennis. My client and I determine our position, structure our offer and lob it over the net. We wait. Soon, the other side does the same thing and  we have the ball--and a sense … (10 comments)

Outer Banks Ocean Front Rental Worth Checking Out - 03/01/11 11:47 AM
We have a home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina that we rent through Carolina Designs.  We selected Carolina Designs because we feel like they have high standards for the homes in their program and we have high standards for our home as a beach rental. Luckily, we get a lot of repeat renters. That is great as an owner because they treat the home like it is their own. At the same time, we like to keep the house up so that they will come back. It is a win-win for both of us!
I got my statement this … (1 comments)
