business: Bogged Down By Inefficiencies? Make a Change! - 03/06/12 07:59 PM
If you have read any of my previous posts, you know that I came to real estate after a career in software. This expereince has served me well, in some cases, and caused me to make bad decisions in others. When it comes to setting things up for myself, I have a real 'can do' attitude. And while I usually CAN do it, it doesn't always make sense for me to do it. Shortly after the new year, I made a big mistake. I was cancelling several products to which I subscribed and I accidentally cancelled my website.  After a couple of minutes … (7 comments)

business: A Movie We Can All Learn From - 09/01/10 06:10 AM
Last night we happened to catch, 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,' on CNBC.
If you haven't had a chance to watch this movie, I would highly recommend it. I read the book several years back, but something about seeing the people involved really brought the emotion and the tragedy of the situation home for me.
This movie should be required viewing for all business students (and anyone who works in business), because I think it does a fantastic job of highlighting how, as things go wrong or become difficult, group think can take over common sense and ethical decision … (2 comments)

business: What We Can (and Should) Learn From Toyota - 02/19/10 07:45 AM
Wow! What a come down for the company who has always been highest rated for quality. I do not intend to make light of the problems that plague Toyota vehicles. They are real and they need to be fixed. I am a long time Toyota owner and I have owned a number of their vehicles over the years. In December, we purchased  our latest Toyota to replace a very poor quality Audi. I was relieved to return to the high quality vehicles created by Toyota. I am a little less relieved now that my car has been recalled and the press … (7 comments)

business: Playing Favorites is a Tricky Business Decision! - 01/14/10 01:37 AM
My husband and I once went in to a car dealership to buy a new SUV. The new car was intended for me. The entire time we were there, the salesperson spoke only to my husband--despite the fact that we made it very clear that this was to be my car. We walked out of that dealership and bought a different car from a different salesperson. Last week when we drove by the dealer my husband turned to me and said, 'we'll never buy a car there.' What makes that significant is that it has been 15 years since this happened. … (7 comments)

business: Lease or Buy: What I Learned from My 3 Year Experiement - 11/23/09 12:37 AM
Three years ago, in the market for a new car, I asked around to find out what people thought about leasing or buying. The feedback I received was split, but there were strong feelings on either side. Taking all of the advice in to account, we decided to buy, and went in to negotiate with the dealer.  Several hours later, and following a really good leasing program presentation, we decided to lease. Our decision  was based on these factors: the APR was very, very low, we planned to buy the vehicle at the end, it allowed us to keep our money … (5 comments)

business: Share Your ActiveRain Success Stories! - 07/17/09 10:15 AM
I created a group last year to celebrate our first successes on ActiveRain. The idea was that it would be a great place for newbies to go for inspiration and to see how their hard work would, eventually, translate in to business.
Admittedly, I did a pretty poor job of marketing it...
I just spent some time surfing through AR and decided that there really would be some value in sharing these experiences in one place. If you have a story you would like to share, or one that you have previously posted, please consider posting it to ActiveRain is the … (7 comments)

business: Why Price Reductions Work - 05/15/09 12:39 AM
I have always felt that pricing a listing was one of my strengths.  I keep on top of the comparables and try to know the 'pulse' of the local market.  I study the data and talk to both buyers and home owners.
The past year has challenged all of us who list homes. With very few comparables and nervous buyers, it is hard to know exactly what price will bring in an offer.
Every property has what I like to think of as a 'drop dead price.'  This is the price at which buyers will be unable to ignore the great … (0 comments)

business: Ethics and Money CAN be Compatible - 04/09/09 04:33 AM
Yesterday, after doing a little web-surfing, I wrote a post about some sellers offering a higher commission to more quickly sell their homes. It became a featured post (thank you ActiveRain!) and created some great discussion. That post is, Would You Pay More To Sell Your House?Let me be clear; I sell Real Estate to earn a living. If not, I would spend my time volunteering.  Real Estate is not philanthropic, we are all doing it to pay the bills.
I would contend however, that the folks who are doing it for the 'long haul' do not focus too much time … (5 comments)

business: Surround Yourself with Excellence for Success! - 12/12/08 06:05 AM

My son attends a middle school that plays competitive basketball. They have three teams for which the students must tryout.  After tryouts he was assigned to the middle of the three teams.  Being a competitive kid, he was very upset that he did not make the highest team.  We consoled him with the fact that he could be team leader on his team and would have lots of playing opportunity.
They have played 2 games and this week my son was asked to move up to the top team.  As  parents, we were a little nervous about this. We knew … (3 comments)

business: Can Anyone Recommend a Business Card Scanner? - 10/04/08 02:23 AM
My husband, a builder, and I have decided to jointly purchase a business card scanner.  I volunteered to do the research and, of course, came right to ActiveRain where I can always get solid advice.
Do any of you use one on a regular basis?  We are looking for 1) easy to configure, 2) easy to use, 3) feed in  to Outlook (and Access as an added bonus).
I am all about technology, but sometimes things that make it to market are 'not ready for primetime.' If you have one that you like--or one that you don't--would you mind sharing?
Thanks!
