fairfax county: New NVHomes Community in Herndon, VA-- Summer House Landing - 04/21/17 11:06 AM

I did a preview on Friday of the new community being built on the former site of Woody's Golf, Summer House Landing, in Herndon, Virginia. The builder is NVHomes.  The community will consist of 30, 1/2 acre lots. It will feature a sidewalk, extensive plantings and a pond. It is accessed via Sugarland Road (although former customers of Woody's may think the Route 7 side provides access, it does not). There are currently 9 lots, plus the model home, available for sale. There are currently 3 lots that are under contract. There will be more lots released as this section approaches completion. These homes … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Why I Love Living in Reston, Virginia! - 06/17/15 05:22 AM
When you grow up in a community, you don't always understand what makes it special. I came to live in Reston when I was 7 years old. I left when I went to college and returned as a young newlywed--and as my husband will tell you, I did not return without reservations (mostly because I just wanted to try something different). As we looked and looked for our first new home, it became clear to us that we would get the most for our money in Reston.
While it may have been an affordable option when we bought our first house, … (0 comments)

fairfax county: How Do School Boundaries Affect Your Fairfax County Home Purchase/Sale? - 02/10/13 10:02 PM
How Do School Boundaries Affect Your Fairfax County Home Purchase/Sale?
When I am working with buyers who have school-aged children, our search usually begins with one, or several, school boundaries. The reasons are obvious; if you believe a school would be well suited for your child, you will seek a home that will allow them to attend that school.   Buyers who don't have children are usually blissfully unaware of the school boundaries, but it should be an important consideration for them, too. At some point, every buyer becomes a seller.  Selling a home in a school district, or within a … (2 comments)

fairfax county: Where, oh where, are the Northern Virginia Listings? - 02/05/13 11:06 PM
In the world of real estate, the Spring Market really gets going in February. Some will say that Super Bowl weekend is the last real 'winter market' weekend. On that theory, we should be seeing a lot of new listings. I have seen an increase in properties for sale, but we are still woefully short of inventory.
If you are planning to sell your Northern Virginia home this spring, it is a great time to get your home on the market. Buyers who have been without inventory all winter (and we have had a real shortage), are anxious to write contracts. … (4 comments)

fairfax county: September 2012 Listing Inventory Statistics for Fairfax County - 11/04/12 01:38 AM
Most Northern Virginia Realtors will tell you that there is shortage of Inventory.
What does that mean to you as a buyer? It means there are fewer homes to choose from and more competition for the good deals   What does that mean to you as a seller? It means that it might be a good time to list your house, BUT, there are fewer buyers out looking at this time of year. Your home must be exceptionally well-prepared and competitively priced to compete.   In this market a 'good deal' is defined as a home that: Appraises at contract value: don't list … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Naming the Silver Line Metro Stations in Northern Virginia - 02/21/12 02:53 AM
It has taken years, but the Washington D.C. Metro is finally being extended West from Rt. 66 through Tysons Corner, Reston and Herndon.  The battles have been many, over funding, raised or buried tracks, station locations and more.
The latest discussion is over naming the stations.  If you have any interest in weighing in on the station names, this is your chance! The Metro Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are at odds over the names of the new stations. Frankly, I would love to see the public weigh in and let these folks know what we would like … (0 comments)

fairfax county: An Alternative for Fairfax County Teens - 12/07/11 01:01 AM
There is always a lot of discussion about whether it is fair to push all graduating Seniors towards college. We are all familiar with the arguments in favor of college, but we don't always hear as much discussion about postponing college.
In Europe, it is common for students to take a 'Gap Year,' before attending University. Today, I got an email about a Gap Year Program Fair in Fairfax County for our students to provide them with information about taking a Gap Year. If you know a FCPS high school student who might benefit from some extra time before heading off to college … (1 comments)

fairfax county: Most and Least Expensive Homes Sold in Reston, Virginia, August 2011 - 09/06/11 01:13 AM
Curious about what the least expensive and most expensive homes sold in Reston, Virginia in  August 2011?

August is generally a relatively slow month for Real Estate in Northern Virginia. August saw the completed sale of 69 properties in Reston.

The least expensive of these properties was a 3 bedroom condominium in the Hunters Woods section of Reston. This property was located on Freetown Court, and  sold for $105,000. This property was a short sale (terms of sale had to be approved by the bank), 1004 square feet in size with 3 bedrooms and 1 full bath.

fairfax county: Why Do Fairfax County Schools Start So Late??!! - 09/02/11 06:58 AM
This is the last official day of summer vacation for Fairfax County Public School Students. Every year, the FCPS system opens the day after Labor Day. If you are from anywhere else in the country--or if your children attend private school--chances are good that they are already back in school. Not here in Virginia! Virginia has a law on the books called, fondly, 'The Kings Dominion Law,' which prevents school systems from opening before Labor Day. The idea, was to keep seasonal employees working through the holiday weekend so tourist money would continue coming into the Commonwealth. There are exceptions to … (3 comments)

fairfax county: Explore Fairfax County, Virginia in your Jammies! - 08/23/11 10:21 AM
I was at the Fairfax County, Virginia website  and saw that there was some information about something called Virtual Fairfax.  Always on the lookout for tools that I can use in my business, I went ahead and downloaded the application.

It is very cool! It is a great way to see an ariel view of property that your client might be considering.  I have lived in my neighborhood for almost 10 years and always wondered how the properties on the street behind my neighbor's homes lined up. The detail was good enough that I could easily determine which family's homes adjoined … (0 comments)

Fairfax County Public Schools are run by the Superintendent of the school, Jack Dale, who provides  overall leadership and direction to the school division. The elected School Board  sets County School policy.
There are 12 members of the Fairfax County School Board, each of whom is elected for a four year term. Nine of these members represent specific districts and three are at-large members.  The members receive pay ($20,000 annually with an extra $2,000 for the chairman). Fairfax County Public Schools Supply Lists, 2011-2012 Fairfax County Public Schools contains 196 schools, so it is difficult to do a list of school supplies for each school.  Most School Supply lists can be found on the individual school website.  In addition, local office supply stores and discount department stores (in the Reston area, these include Office Depot and Target)  often have lists that have been provided to them by the local schools. If you do not have luck with either of these places, you will likely receive a list in the back-to-school packet that your receive from your child's school. … (0 comments)
