fairfax county: Naming the Silver Line Metro Stations in Northern Virginia - 02/21/12 10:53 AM
It has taken years, but the Washington D.C. Metro is finally being extended West from Rt. 66 through Tysons Corner, Reston and Herndon. The battles have been many, over funding, raised or buried tracks, station locations and more. The latest discussion is over naming the stations. If you have any interest in weighing in on the station names, this is your chance! The Metro Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are at odds over the names of the new stations. Frankly, I would love to see the public weigh in and let these folks know what we would like

fairfax county: An Alternative for Fairfax County Teens - 12/07/11 09:01 AM
There is always a lot of discussion about whether it is fair to push all graduating Seniors towards college. We are all familiar with the arguments in favor of college, but we don't always hear as much discussion about postponing college. In Europe, it is common for students to take a 'Gap Year,' before attending University. Today, I got an email about a Gap Year Program Fair in Fairfax County for our students to provide them with information about taking a Gap Year. If you know a FCPS high school student who might benefit from some extra time before heading off to college

fairfax county: Why Do Fairfax County Schools Start So Late??!! - 09/02/11 01:58 PM
This is the last official day of summer vacation for Fairfax County Public School Students. Every year, the FCPS system opens the day after Labor Day. If you are from anywhere else in the country--or if your children attend private school--chances are good that they are already back in school. Not here in Virginia! Virginia has a law on the books called, fondly, 'The Kings Dominion Law,' which prevents school systems from opening before Labor Day. The idea, was to keep seasonal employees working through the holiday weekend so tourist money would continue coming into the Commonwealth. There are exceptions to

fairfax county: Explore Fairfax County, Virginia in your Jammies! - 08/23/11 05:21 PM
I was at the Fairfax County, Virginia website and saw that there was some information about something called Virtual Fairfax. Always on the lookout for tools that I can use in my business, I went ahead and downloaded the application. It is very cool! It is a great way to see an ariel view of property that your client might be considering. I have lived in my neighborhood for almost 10 years and always wondered how the properties on the street behind my neighbor's homes lined up. The detail was good enough that I could easily determine which family's homes adjoined

fairfax county: Fairfax County Public Schools Supply Lists, 2011-2012 - 08/15/11 12:02 PM
Fairfax County Public Schools Supply Lists, 2011-2012 Fairfax County Public Schools contains 196 schools, so it is difficult to do a list of school supplies for each school. Most School Supply lists can be found on the individual school website. In addition, local office supply stores and discount department stores (in the Reston area, these include Office Depot and Target) often have lists that have been provided to them by the local schools. If you do not have luck with either of these places, you will likely receive a list in the back-to-school packet that your receive from your child's school.

fairfax county: I think this time we are going to get it... - 01/26/11 04:09 PM
Snow, that is! Northern Virginia has had a number of huge storms miss us so far this season. It looks like the one that started about an hour ago with sleet and thunder, and now snow, is going to hunker down and drop on us! Most of the area was anticipating this to begin at between 3 and 4. It began right on schedule. We are expecting between 7 and 10 inches in the Reston area. That might not seem like a lot to places more accustomed to snow, but that is a huge amount for (although nothing like the back-to-back

fairfax county: Every Reston, VA Girl Should Be Able to Go To Their 2011 Prom - 01/21/11 08:19 AM
Every Reston, VA, girl should be able to go to their prom. As the mother of two teenage girls, I can attest first hand that getting a young woman outfitted for her high school Prom can be a very expensive undertaking. Many families, particularly in this challenging economic climate, cannot afford the dress--let alone all of the accessories that go with the dress. There is a program in place to make sure that every young woman will have something to wear. The Reston Community Center is sponsoring a Prom Dress Drive to Benefit Reston Area Teens from January 10 to February

fairfax county: How to Hit a Deer - 11/27/10 05:24 PM
The Virginia Suburbs of Washington D.C. are a beautiful place to live, but at certain times of the year, deer can be a real threat to the safety of drivers.Lately, you can drive any road in the area and find evidence of car and deer collisions. Deer are particularly active between 6-9 in the evening (and hard to see as they approach the road) and during mating season. Occasionally, you will see Department of Transportation warnings in areas where the deer are particularly active, but mostly, it is driver beware!Growing up in the area, we were taught the proper way to

fairfax county: Understand the School Boundaries in Fairfax County - 08/20/10 08:01 AM
In Fairfax County, students MUST attend the school that serves their community unless a waiver has been petitioned for and provided. Other counties and Cities handle this in different ways, but this policy makes it very important that home purchasers, and renters, double check the boundaries if it is important for them to find a house within a certain school community.Realtors provide information to the best of their ability in the MLS, but as we are all human, there are on occasional errors on the listings. If you are looking for a home and the school is important to you, use

fairfax county: Bus Service for Reston May Be Cut...How Can You Help? - 04/02/10 01:04 PM
I was recently contacted by a member of the Sustainable Reston Initiative, which is a committee of the Reston Citizen's Association. They are working to let people in the Reston, and the general Fairfax County area, know about the elimination of certain bus routes and bus service to Reston. There are many Reston residents who depend on this service to provide transportation to and from their places of employment. It is important that all sides of every issue be heard and I am happy to provide this information to the public via Diane Blust of the Sustainable Reston Initiative.
