herndon: Naming the Silver Line Metro Stations in Northern Virginia - 02/21/12 10:53 AM
It has taken years, but the Washington D.C. Metro is finally being extended West from Rt. 66 through Tysons Corner, Reston and Herndon. The battles have been many, over funding, raised or buried tracks, station locations and more.
The latest discussion is over naming the stations. If you have any interest in weighing in on the station names, this is your chance! The Metro Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are at odds over the names of the new stations. Last year, around this time, my daughter and I spotted Motorcycle Santa on the Fairfax County Parkway, in Reston, VA. She snapped this picture from my Blackberry, while I kept my eyes on the road: Last Saturday, I spotted him again, this time on Reston Parkway. This weekend Herndon High School in Herndon, Virginia celebrates Homecoming with several long-standing traditions. The Homecoming Parade kicks off at 9:30 and runs along Historic Elden Street, ending in front of the Government Center. Come out and enjoy the class floats, the football team, the Homecoming Princesses, the Herndon Middle School Marching Band, The Herndon High Marching Band, the Cheerleaders, the Dance Team, and the many, many community groups who will be marching. It is that time of year again...pack the chairs and head out for a Friday night of music under the stars in Herndon, Virginia.
The Friday Night Live Concert Series takes place each Friday night on the Town Green in Downtown Herndon. There is plentiful parking and it is also just off the W&OD trail if you would prefer to walk, run or bike to the venue. The concert series began on May 6 and is currently in full swing. This weekend is the Herndon Festival in downtown, Herndon, Virginia. I wrote about the festival and the schedule of events in my post, Herndon Festival (Herndon, Virginia) Begins Tonight, 6/3/11. One thing I did not include was the surprise 'flash mob' that happened this weekend at the festival. This is the last week for regular season for Herndon High School Boys Varsity Soccer, (of Herndon, Virginia) and they kept their 1st place position in the Concorde District. They finished the season with a 5-0 District Record and an 11-0 overall record. Last night, I had a chance to attend the Herndon High vs. Langley High game. Both teams were first place in their districts and have been battling it out all year to be seen as the 'best in the State.' The game finished tied 2 all. Monday the weather is supposed to be great, so make plans to get out and enjoy good music and good wine (and some beer, too) at the Herndon, Virginia Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival.
A sampling of the wineries that will be present include: Peaks of Otter Winery, North Gate Vineyards, Cooper Vineyards, and Barboursville Vineyards.

My daughter walked across the stage at the George Mason Patriot Center today and accepted her high school diploma from Herndon High School. The grads were made up of students from both Herndon and Reston, Virginia. It was a special moment for our family and all of the other families who had a graduate cross the stage. We spent the weekend going from party to party celebrating these young people and the completion of this phase of their lives.
