northern virginia: Where Am I in Reston, Virginia? - 03/21/12 03:45 PM
As a Reston Realtor, I am out in the community daily. I thought it might be fun to play a little game of 'where am I in Reston, Virginia?' Periodically, I will post pictures of where I am, or have been, and then I will follow up with an answer and a little bit of information about the location.
So here we go...

northern virginia: What Can I Do To Avoid a Buyer Who Changes Their Mind? - 02/27/12 04:54 AM
Yesterday, I wrote a post called How Easy Is it To Get Out of a Contract? It was very well received, since this is a topic most buyers and sellers wonder about and most Realtors have to deal with, at some point. Turning the subject around, how do we protect Sellers from a buyer who changes their mind?  That is a little tougher. Keep in mind that each state has a different sales contract, and my comments deal specifically with Virginia. When a contract is ratified in Virginia, more often than not, it has contingencies. There is a mandatory contingency for any … (3 comments)

northern virginia: Understanding Northern Virginia Buyers - 02/10/12 07:47 AM
My real estate practice includes working both with Buyers and with Sellers. I try to work equally with each type of client. I believe that understanding how each group is thinking helps me to better represent the other group. I have been talking to listing clients lately and found myself repeating what I am seeing my buyers looking for in a new home.  Just as all all real estate is local (which usually relates to price), so are the preferences shown by buyers. Northern Virginia buyers are, as a whole, extremely well educated and informed about local real estate.  Both their expectations and their standards are high--at … (3 comments)

northern virginia: Looking For Things To Do in Northern Virginia? - 01/20/12 07:55 AM
Northern Virginia is a great place to live!  There are things to do all over the Washington D.C. metro area. From NOVA (as we Virginians call it), it is an easy jaunt to Maryland or D.C.  We have access to museums, monuments, theaters, events (and great shopping) throughout the area. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, The Washington Post is a great place to start. Each Friday they publish a Weekend section that provides theater, art, music, movies and local event information. This pullout section is a great resource. If you are not a paper subscriber, you can get most of this … (0 comments)

northern virginia: An Important Consideration for Any Home Buyer - 01/09/12 07:27 AM
As a Realtor, one of the skills I bring to the table is helping my clients determine the investment value of their purchase. This doesn't always work the way that we expect (the bursting real estate bubble caught almost everyone by surprise), but it is something that every purchaser should consider. There is more to evaluating an investment, than just how quickly your equity will grow. One of the most important things to consider is how quickly you could sell your home, if your personal situation changes. At any given time there is a pool of buyers looking at homes in your local area. Sometimes … (28 comments)

northern virginia: New Laws in Virgina for 2012 - 01/02/12 07:29 AM
There are a couple of changes in the law for 2012 that Virginians need to know about, or may be interested in.
An important one for Northern Virginia residents is the increased toll at the main plaza of the Dulles Toll Road. The new rate is $1.50, up from $1.25. The other on/off-ramps will remain at $.75.   Other laws include stricter rules for Abortion Clinics and a prison reform law that will require that 10% of money earned by inmates be put into an account so that there is  money available to them when they leave prison.   Another new law allows new mothers the option to receive a … (2 comments)

northern virginia: MotorCycle Santa Spreads Christmas Cheer in Reston & Herndon, VA - 12/15/11 12:26 PM
Last year, around this time, my daughter and I spotted Motorcycle Santa on the Fairfax County Parkway, in Reston, VA. She snapped this picture from my Blackberry, while I kept my eyes on the road: Last Saturday, I spotted him again, this time on Reston Parkway. He was blasting music from the speakers on his bike (All I want for Christmas is You).  Two years in a row? Who is this guy and is he the same one from last year? Today, I saw an article in the Herndon Patch, Motorcycle-Riding Santa Claus Brings Holiday Fun to Local Schools. Now I am not … (1 comments)

northern virginia: Exploring Leesburg, Virgina - 12/02/11 08:20 AM
If I did not live in Reston, Virginia, there is a pretty good chance I would live in Leesburg, Virginia.
For years, my children attended school in Leesburg, VA and I got a pretty good sense of the wonderful community of Leesburg. It has a great downtown area and some of the most beautiful old homes in the area (I have always wanted one of those great old homes!).
If you work in the District, living in Leesburg is not for the feint of heart. The commutes can be long, but there is bus service, the Dulles Greenway, and, if all … (2 comments)

northern virginia: Add Value to Your Northern Virginia Home with Fall Planting - 09/19/11 09:08 AM
Fall has come quickly to Northern Virginia. No where was that more evident this weekend than in the number of folks out working in their yards. This is a great time to take an objective look at your plantings and make necessary updates to the landscape. Fall flowers can be a relatively small investment that can provide big impact. Chrysanthemums do really well in our climate and can even be perennials in the right location. I often plant Pansies late in the fall; they provide color in the fall and early winter. Over the winter they freeze and then bounce back … (3 comments)

northern virginia: What a Week it has been in Northern Virginia! - 08/28/11 04:25 PM
It began as a regular old week...one of the last before the kids headed back to school and summer comes to its unofficial end. Then on Tuesday, we were rocked by an Earthquake. Registering 5.9 on the Richter scale, it was felt up and down the East Coast and into the Midwest. I was on my screened porch (up on pilings), talking to my 15 year old son.  Our first instinct was denial of what might be happening. My first thought was that a delivery truck was causing then vibrations. My second thought was that one of my neighbors might be … (2 comments)

northern virginia: Herndon Festival Flash Mob - 06/05/11 04:23 PM
This weekend is the Herndon Festival in downtown, Herndon, Virginia. I wrote about the festival and the schedule of events in my post, Herndon Festival (Herndon, Virginia) Begins Tonight, 6/3/11. One thing I did not include was the surprise 'flash mob' that happened this weekend at the festival. I always love a good 'flash mob,' and the element of surprise is one of the things that make them so much fun! Here is a video of the one that 'broke out' this weekend at the Herndon Festival.

Thanks to the Herndon Patch for their coverage of this fun event! Flash … (2 comments)

northern virginia: Herndon High School Boys Varsity Soccer Moves into Concorde District Tournament Play - 05/12/11 05:34 PM
This is the last week for regular season for Herndon High School Boys Varsity Soccer, (of Herndon, Virginia) and they kept their 1st place position in the Concorde District. They finished the season with a 5-0 District Record and an 11-0 overall record. Last night, I had a chance to attend the Herndon High vs. Langley High game. Both teams were first place in their districts and have been battling it out all year to be seen as the 'best in the State.'  The game finished tied 2 all.  It was very exciting, with nearly as many people in attendance as … (2 comments)

northern virginia: The Snow has provided a Great Opportunity to evaluate your home! - 01/27/11 09:13 AM
The Snow has provided a Great Opportunity to evaluate your home! Northern Virginia got socked with 8-12 inches of snow last night. I hope all of you reading this got home safe and sound last night (and without too much of a delay).  Right now begins the big dig-out, but it also provides a great opportunity to see how well sealed your home is. A well-sealed house will not release as much warm air as a house with less insulation and sealing. As you clear the driveways and sidewalks in your neighborhood, pay attention to how quickly the snow melts on … (4 comments)
