washington dc: The Caped Crusader Fights Childhood Cancer - 03/29/12 04:28 AM
Every once in a while, you read a news story that just makes you feel good about mankind. This morning in the Washington Post, I read just such a story. There is a gentleman in the D.C. area who has made it his quest in life to bring joy and excitement to kids suffering from cancer and with cancer treatments. Driving his black Lamborghini, and dressed as one our favorite superheroes, Batman, this caped crusader visits local hospitals and gives his time--and gifts--to the young patients. He has been fortunate enough in his career to be able to afford to bring

washington dc: It is that Time of Year: The 2010 Cherry Blossom Festival - 03/28/10 08:27 AM
One of the most beautiful times of the year in Washington D.C. is the emergence of the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin. So beautiful, in fact, that the city hosts an entire festival around the event. Tourists come from all over the world to see these gorgeous trees and to enjoy the parade of events that take place in and around the Lincoln Memorial. The Washington Post Weekend section has created a wonderful map of clusters of Cherry Trees in and around the metro area. This map and the companion audio can be found at htttp://www.washingtonpost.com/cherryblossoms. This year the blooms

washington dc: What You Can Do To Prevent Snow Storms! - 02/09/10 04:09 PM
I am at the point where I just have to laugh with all the snow that we have had this year in Virginia--otherwise I would cry! The Washington D.C. metro area, which includes suburban Virginia and Maryland, usually gets a couple of light snows, but rarely anything like what we have gotten this year. The evidence is anecdotal, but it seems to me that the years that we purchased or upgraded our snow blower were years that we got little or no snow So here is a list of things that you should do to prepare for NEXT winter. I can

washington dc: A Great Evening in Downtown Washington D.C.! - 10/10/09 10:28 AM
My husband and I went downtown (Washington D.C) last night with some close friends to celebrate our anniversary and several birthdays that we had all celebrated between us. We had a lovely dinner at Chef Geoff's Downtown before heading to the National Theater. Chef Geoff's was a great choice for a pre-theater meal; it was around the corner from the theater and across from the Warner Theater, so they are accustomed to working with theater ticket deadlines. The served us efficiently and we arrived at the the theater with plenty of time to find our seats and glance through the Play

washington dc: Things to Do: Let's Go Fly a Kite...on the National Mall - 03/20/09 06:44 AM
One of my favorite Spring traditions in the Washington D.C. area is the Smithsonian Kite Festival on the National Mall. Picture hundreds of kites flying simultaneously against a (hopefully) bright blue sky. It is a sure way to celebrate the beginning of Spring! If you are looking for something to do this weekend, Saturday, March 21, and want to prepare your family for next weekend's Kite Festival , the Kites of Asia Family Day is tomorrow at the National Air and Space Museum's National Mall Building. The events are free and include lessons on how to fly kites, indoor kite-flying demonstrations,

washington dc: Is there a Post-Election 'Bump' in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area? - 11/06/08 09:45 AM
There is a an Urban Legend, perpetuated by the local press, that the day after a new President is elected real estate agents around the Washington D.C. metro are immediately called in to action helping the incoming and outgoing political players buy and sell real estate. I am curious if any of you have seen, or experienced in the past, this phenomenon. It would be interesting to know, too, if people are more likely to rent, or rent out, their properties this time given the current state of the national real estate market. I do think that while

washington dc: New Cap for FHA Backed Loans - 03/07/08 12:51 PM
The Federal Government raised the ceiling amount on government insured loans in high-cost areas, effective March 6, 2008. This was wonderful news for the Washington Metropolitan Area and folks interested in buying, or selling, a home. Since I am licensed in Virginia, and that is where the bulk of my clients live, I checked to make sure that all of the counties in which I work were covered. These new limits cover all of the ‘inside the beltway areas' and extend out to Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford and Fauquier (as well as other areas not specifically mentioned). This new loan limit,

washington dc: Restaurant Week in Washington D.C. - 01/14/08 08:38 AM
If you are looking for something to do--and to save money while doing it--this week is 'Restaurant Week' in Washington D.C. During this week 170 restaurants offer fixed price dining options: 3-course lunches for $20, and 3-course dinners for $30.08. It is possible to make reservations for this event through opentable.com. Because not all restaurants offer both lunch and dinner options, be sure to confirm that they are participating and that they are offering their fixed price meal at the time of your reservation. This is a great opportunity to try some restaurants that you might other wise consider too pricey. Have

washington dc: Group Think and Real Estate - 12/17/07 08:07 AM
There was an interesting article in the Washington Post this morning, 12/17/07. Written by Shankar Vedantam, the article titled 'Bad Ideas Can Be Contagious,'discusses the phenomenon of 'group think' and how it affects the decisions we make. What I found most compelling about the article was the assertion that this phenomenon largely contributed to the Real Estate bubble. Also discussed is the idea that those of us in the Washington D.C. metro area felt largely distanced from real estate market corrections, but now that the correction has been accepted as fact, it is believed by all. Read the article, link below, and let me know your thoughts. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/16/AR2007121601472.html
