Need an easy way for clients to pay for their inspections? This is it! We spent eight months negotiating a 3 year contract (starting May '08) with one of the nations largest credit card processors for the best rates possible. You do not need to be using our website hosting or our software to sign up under this arrangement.

Rates start as low as 1.53% for swiped cards and 2.02% for internet transactions.

This means that if you're using another inspection software program, or Microsoft Word, you can generate a PDF then use our service. Home Inspector Pro 2.6 Released for Mac & Windows

Hi Guys,

The next installment of Home Inspector Pro, 2.6 has been publicly released. I'd like to thank all the beta testers who've helped out over the past month (many of which are here on AR) in checking out the features added in since 2.5.7. A lot of discussions have taken place via email, phone and especially on the message boards on http://www.homeinspectorpro.com that have contributed to this update. Home Inspector Pro is built by you, the inspector. We're just putting together what you want to see. There were a few more features I was hoping to get into this version, but a major ad campaign that we had setup came out a few days early so we had to put this version out now so people downloading the trial would see the latest and greatest. If you'd like to be a part of how the program is shaped, make sure to participate in the message board discussions!!

You can download the new versions update by logging into http://www.homeinspectorpro.com and click on Software Updates on the left hand side if you are already a user, or the Download Trial button if you're not.

Here is a list of some of the latest updates since the last public version 2.5.7 a month ago.

New Feature: Spellcheck added in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. Added to add add/edit comments, edit documents, footer, contract, and photo caption windows. You will see words underlined and can also hit F7 to run a complete spell check to run through the entire document, comment, etc. Right click on the words spelled incorrectly to see suggestions.

New Feature: Report PDF sizes are now up to 300% smaller. A beta tester sent me an inspection with 200 photos, it was only 4 megs.

New Feature: Copy button added to Edit Template. You can now make a copy of an entire section such as the bathroom with one click. Very useful for people who want a separate page for each Bedroom or Bathroom. Or to work on multi unit complexes.

New Feature: Report PDF's are now 128 bit encrypted. Encryption is set to prevent anyone from editing the PDF's in any way, but still allows text to be copied from the pdf to another program (in case it's needed). PDF annotations (comments added on top of the pdf itself) are currently disabled as well, but this may be made an option up to inspector in the future. Let me know what you think. Attempts to decrypt(hack) a PDF are arguably illegal via the DMCA which provides the inspector with an additional layer of security.

New Feature: The caption field for photos is now a drop down that is automatically populated with the black & red comments you have selected for the section the photo is going to appear in. Red items appear first (as they would be used as captions more often) then a ------, followed by the black items.

New Feature: Added ability to read in PNG images for the company logo.

New Feature: Click on a photo in the Photo pages and a large version of it will pop up. Click it again to make it go away. This is very useful when working on small resolutions and on UMPC's like the Samsung Q1 and the Asus EEE PC (they have 7 inch screens so the images are small unless you click on them). The images will also remain up if you want to browse to another section in the program and use them for reference.

New Feature: Finally finished this feature. When you use the report upload service it will now list your email address as the reply to address. It will have to list our email address as the from to minimize spam filters from blocking it, but the important thing is that if the client or agent hits reply, the emails will now go to you. Give it a spin. Keep in mind this means that you need to keep an eye on any emails bouncing back to you as bad now as we won't receive them, you will. Often these end up in the spam filter, so check there and make sure to mark them as not spam to teach your

New Feature: Inspectors are now notified via email when an Agent or Inspector views their report through the report upload syste,

New Features: Added popup when you hover over section names in the Print Settings area that lists the entire section name.

New Feature: Remove Company Name on Cover Option added under Report Settings->Options.

New Feature: License number now appears on the normal cover page (previously it only appeared on the Texas cover page).

New Feature: Added a move up/down button to the red & black comments so you can rearrange their appearance.

New Feature: Rotate image 90 degrees clockwise/counterclockwise now added to edit photo.

New Feature: You can now change the line thickness used to draw arrows, rectangles, etc in the photo editor. Set this in Report Settings->Options->Photo Editing.

New Feature: You can now change the default color used to draw arrows, rectangles, etc in the photo editor. Set this in Report Settings->Options->Photo Editing.

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: Bullets

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: Bullets & New Line

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: New line and extra line (double spaced)

New Feature: When performing a bulk photo import you can choose to skip the cover page slot, allowing you to easily add a cover photo afterwards without removing what's in the slot first.

New Feature: When performing a bulk photo import you can choose to add the photos to every other slot. This leaves a blank place for another photo to go next to each photo. This is very useful for adding infrared photos.

New Feature: When in the template editor, double click on any inspection items to change the tab name or the panel names.

New Feature: Added a Other Info to client info that will appear on the cover page of the report.

Design Change: & and ' are no longer valid characters for the inspection and pdf name. They are not compatible with internet URL's so cause problems when uploaded online.

Design Change: When a client views the report online, the size of the pdf clickable icon has been increased.

Design Change: On the photos page clicking on the Section drop down or Item drop down will create a larger popup box than before, allowing longer titles to be read and differentiated from each other.

Design Change: When you click on Add or Edit Comment the cursor will automatically be focused on the edit box so you can start typing without clicking on the text area first.

Design Change: Logos are now stored as PNG instead of JPG for better quality.

Design Change: Company logos are now converted to a higher resolution for better quality. We advise you to reload your company logo if you'd like it to be higher quality. A page width image should be 800x150 pixels.

Design Change: Company logo position adjusted when positioned at the top of the cover page.

Design Change: If you are using 800x600 resolution the checkboxes on the add photo page are moved to their own line so they are visible.

Design Change: The gray bar that splits 2 panels (runs horizontally) can now be moved farther up/down so that all of the Edit Comments section can be seen when running in 800x600.

Design Change: Photos are now printed on the report in the order the appear in the Add Photos section, not in the order they are added. Before if you had left a space open on the first page, but it was the last photo added, it would appear last in whatever section you added it to.

Design Change: When you click on Edit Comments, the text box above Add has been removed. Now you click on Add Comment and get a popup box that will allow you to enter in multiple comments.

Design Change: The Template Editor now only has a Save button. The cancel button was removed as it was not practical to try and maintain all the changes and then reverse them. Since it's so easy now to make changes to panels, it isn't necessary anymore.

Design Change: When you double click on a comment to edit it you now get a MUCH larger edit box with the ability to hit enter to create multiple paragraph entries.

Design Change: Renamed the "Add Photos" menu to "Add/Review Photos"

Design Change: Should not need to slide the gray horizontal bar down now to get access to the edit description box.

Design Change: All the client info now shows in the Additional Comments area for the Texas Template layout

Design Change: Preview Report button has been renamed to Generate Report. This is to eliminate confusion with inspectors who were trying to preview older reports.

Design Change: Removed the Print Report button. It wasn't being used, every inspector we talked to previewed first, then printed. This keeps things simplified on the button bar. The Print Report still exists under the File menu if you need it.

Design Change: Added a little more space inbetween Page 1 of xx when xx is greater than 10

Design Change: The help button on the toolbar now takes you to the animated tutorials on the website instead of in program documentation.

Design Change: When you enter Edit Photo mode the "Draw Arrow" button will be selected as soon as you enter. Since this is the tool used the most, it will save you a click if it's what you're going to be using first.

Design Change: The drop down boxes used to set where the photos will appear now display up to 25 items at once before creating a scroll bar. Previously only 10 were shown which meant you had to scroll at time. 25 was chosen as the max as it's the most that can be shown on an 800x600 resolution computer.

Design Change: Made it so that when you have 2 panels on the screen the split will be closer to 50/50. This is to help out on smaller resolutions.

Design Change: The new larger edit boxes will move a word to the next line if it doesn't fit, rather than splitting the word across lines.

Design Change: Spell check set to ignore capitalization.

Design Change: Spell check suggestions limited to top 15.

Design Change: Draw circle now works by clicking once for the center of the circle and clicking again for the radius.

Design Change: Moved each sections title up 3 pixels to accomodate lowercase p,q,y crossing shading title below.

Design Change: If you check a rating box that item will print if you have selected the option box to only print items if a comment is selected.

Our latest release is out. 2.5.7 is caught up for both the windows and mac version of of the program. The last version was released about a month ago. The new version adds all sorts of features for Thermal Imaging, Bulk Photo Importing, Template Editing & more. Home Inspector Pro is now being used in 10 countries & 4 languages. A list of new features is below.

New Features for 2.5.7 are below:

New Feature: Can type in url's into a comment and it will become a clickable link in the report.

New Feature: Additional options for what is contained in the header/footer of each page have been added. They can be changed in the Report Settings->Option.

New Feature: In Edit Template you can now move and copy items from the right side (tabs) to any other section. Just click the Move/Copy button after selecting the section.

New Feature: Under Company Information there is a date format selection box so that you can choose the way you want dates to be displayed. The formatting is no longer linked to the country you are in.

New Feature: When you are in the Edit Comments mode and select a comment it will now stay selected when you move it up/down. You can also move more than one items up/down at a time and they will all stay selected.

New Feature: The open and save template have been completely rewritten to allow for easier selection of templates and to prevent accidentaly overwriting a template. When saving a template you can type in a name for the template (i.e. Condo Inspection Template) and a description of the template as well as a description of the template (i.e. This template is designed for condos downtown in tall buildings where the roof and exterior are not important and have been removed). It is ok to make the file name the same as the template name. If you try to save a template over a template with a different name you will be presented with a warning message. Please let us know what you think of this new feature.

New Feature: When saving a template the name of the last opened template populates the file name field.

New Feature: When saving an inspection the file name will automatically be populated with the current inspection file name if there is one (you had to reselect it before), or the pdf name if you have already saved the pdf.

New Feature: When saving a pdf the file name will automatically be populated with the name of the inspection file if you have saved the inspection already.

New Feature: You can now make any template the template that opens when the program starts. Check the designated box when saving the template.

New Feature: Enter Key responds the same as clicking add button when typing in the add comment box.

New Feature: Updated for Mac OS Leopard Compatibility

New Feature: Added Age of Home to Client Info and cover page.

New Feature: Added Size of House to Clienfo Info and cover page.

New Feature: Added a Clear All Photos option to the Photos menu. This will clear all the photos currently added to the report (useful if you batch add the wrong folder).

New Feature: Inspection file name or template name will show at the top of the site. Once you save or open an inspection file the name will appear at the top of the program even if you save a template as it's assumed you are updating your current template, but the inspection job is the primary focus. If you open the program and click Open Template, then the template name will appear unless you open or save a client inspection.

New Feature: You can now change the line thickness used to draw arrows, rectangles, etc in the photo editor. Set this in Report Settings->Options->Photo Editing.

New Feature: You can now change the default color used to draw arrows, rectangles, etc in the photo editor. Set this in Report Settings->Options->Photo Editing.

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: Bullets

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: Bullets & New Line

New Feature: Added a new separator between comments: New line and extra line (double spaced)

New Feature: When performing a bulk photo import you can choose to skip the cover page slot, allowing you to easily add a cover photo afterwards without removing what's in the slot first.

New Feature: When performing a bulk photo import you can choose to add the photos to every other slot. This leaves a blank place for another photo to go next to each photo. This is very useful for adding infrared photos.

Design Change: The gray bar that splits 2 panels (runs horizontally) can now be moved farther up/down so that all of the Edit Comments section can be seen when running in 800x600.

Design Change: Photos are now printed on the report in the order the appear in the Add Photos section, not in the order they are added. Before if you had left a space open on the first page, but it was the last photo added, it would appear last in whatever section you added it to.

Design Change: If you are using 800x600 resolution the checkboxes on the add photo page are moved to their own line so they are visible.

Design Change: Huge improvements in batch photo addings. Can now run using much less ram than before and will run faster and smoother.

Design Change: Improvements made to PDF rendering. The total time to create the pdf should decrease a bit.

Design Change: When adding new areas to a template the damage panel and selection panel names are now checked to make sure that the names are not already used on the same page. Names must be unique.

Design Change: If you use Batch add photos multiple times the previous batch will not be cleared. We added a Clear All Photos option instead. The reason for the change is to make the process simpler for multiple inspector teams. Now you can batch add the photos from one camera card, then batch add the photos from the next.

Design Change: Description text now takes affect immediately, before you had to save template then reopen the template.

Design Change: If there is no description text there will not be a space printed out in it's place.

Design Change: When you click open template the current client info will be cleared.

Design Change: When you click print preview only pdf files will be shown in the file chooser.

Design Change: The Report Settings menu was updated to use Edit Comments rather than Edit Tables.

Design Change: Added more color options to Item Description.

Pro's & Con's of the inspection software you use

We are always working hard at making our software easy to use, while creating a great looking report. I'd like to know what you wished the software you use right now had, and what are your favorite features? We put the same question out to our users a few months back but their viewpoint is obviously skewed since they use our software. The only way we're going to get better is from great input from inspectors like you. I realize that several of the programs out right now are great, and I have a good relationship with several of the owners. This isn't about creating a war about what's best, and if you don't want to tell us what you're using, that's fine, listing off the pro's & con's are enough.

Upcoming version of Home Inspector Pro, Looking for input

Hi Guys,

We have a new version coming out of Home Inspector Pro next week and I wanted to show you some of the new features, and get your feedback. What do you like about the report? What would you like to see?

One of the upcoming features is the bookmarks added to the left of the report shown when you open up the report. These will not actually print on the report, and are purely to make it easier to navigate the report. It was added after a suggestion by Steven Turetsky who wanted better navigation. Steven, now you won't even need to scroll to the top of the page to click on the 'tabs' that another program uses. You can click on the bookmarks no matter where you are. I'm still working on getting the summary listed on the bookmarks.

Another feature added is not visible on the report, it's a bulk photo add button. With one click you can add all the photos in a folder to the report. Then you can easily remove the few photos you might now want. Adding 100 photos took about 30 seconds, setting them to the sections they belong to is extremely quick as well.

One thing not on this report that will be done by next week is the ability to change the font size, type & color of the section headings (bathroom, bedroom, etc). This has been requested by quite a few of our users such as Bob Elliot.

Home Inspector Pro featured on NACHI.TV & a great weekend

I had a great week last week. I flew up to Colorado on Thursday and attended the Southern Colorado NACHI meeting in Colorado Springs which featured a bunch of great guys. Almost every home inspection program in existence was represented but an inspector at the meeting and it was great to hear what each person thought the pro's and con's of their software was. I also spent quite a bit of time showing the inspectors search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to improve their search engine rankings.

On Friday I drove up to Boulder, Colorado and met with Nick Gromicko, the founder of NACHI. We filmed a piece on Home Inspector Pro, the home inspection software that I'm the main programmer for. You can view it here: http://www.NACHI.TV , it's Episode 8. Nick's a great guy, with a great personality. He definitely is out to help out his members. He's also got two smart and good looking women working for him. Paige worked the cameras and sometimes is the host. Valerie worked the cameras and also did the video editing for the film.

Then I drove back down to Colorado Springs to watch my brothers Ice Hockey team play against Colorado College. He is the goalie (Nick Maricic) for the Team USA Under 18 Ice Hockey team. They lost by one but for a team of 17 year old playing against one of the top Division 1 schools in the country (full of 20-24 year olds), they did great. Saturday night they played again the Air Force and lost by one again. Next weekend they play the University of Minnesota which is ranked #3 in the nation and then they fly to Switzerland to play in a 4 nation tournament.

Colorado is a beautiful state. The trees were all yellow and green, everyone was extremely nice. And everywhere we went someone made sure to update us on the Rockies score :) We went and looked at houses on Sunday. A brand new 3000 square foot house went for about $300,000. You can't even get a condo for that price here in California!

Version 2.5 of Home Inspector Pro Released

We released version 2.5 of Home Inspector Pro for Windows today, and it has lots of exciting new features! The 2.5 version for Mac should be out by Monday (or sooner). There are now 12 animated tutorials on the website. A few of them will be updated in the next few days to reflect the new updates.

Here's a list of the new features added for 2.5 and the last few versions in case you haven't updated in awhile. If you have any questions please let us know via email, phone, or live chat.

If you are already running Home Inspector Pro version 2.0-2.4.9 select the Update version. If you are installing Home Inspector Pro on a new machines or need to do a complete reinstall use the full version. IMPORTANT: IF YOU UNINSTALL THE PROGRAM IT WILL DELETE ALL YOUR TEMPLATES AND FILES!! MAKE SURE TO BACKUP FIRST! You can just install the update (or even full version) over the existing and you won't lose your work.

What was added in 2.5

Pictures can now be added anywhere in the report, not just at the end! Use the drop down boxes above each picture to control where they will appear in the report. You can check a box next to the picture if you want the picture to still appear at the end. This creates a much better looking report and is extremely fast.
There is a caption field under each picture. You can type in a caption or you can check the box to use the drop down box (section names) as the caption like before.
The border, header and font colors chosen from Report Settings->Formatting now just apply to the cover page, summary page, end of the report photos and earthquake page (if you use it).
You can go to Report Settings -> Section Colors and Print Order to select the colors for individual sections, you can set them all the same, or all different.
Reordering and excluding sections on the report was relocated to Report Settings-> Section Colors and Print Order.
Border thickness can now be adjusted from 0 to 20 pixes allowing a greater control of appearance. Set it at Report Settings -> Section Colors.
Programs starts up 50-60% faster.
Reports are created 50-60% faster.
Several other smaller features.

What was added in 2.4.5-2.4.7

Load time of the program and ram usage was decreased by optimizing the Edit Table panels.
Weather & Time fields added to the Client Info. Both fields are optional.
Changes made to the Photo Panels to allow for much larger images to be loaded
Report Settings->Options was added with lots of new features. These will probably be reorganized at a later date but we wanted to get the functionality in place.
Ability to print pages continuously rather than giving each section its own page.
Ability to print the item description (Comments, Materials, etc) even if no items have been selected.
Ability to not print an item if no comments have been made.
Ability to use roman numerals rather than numbers to label areas on the report.
Ability to use letters rather than numbers to label each item on the report.
Ability to print the summary at the end of the report instead of after the cover page.
Ability to change the title of the summary page.
The documents section no longer prints the file name at the top of the page. We decided it made more sense to allow the user to enter the document name at the top of the document for more flexability.
By using Report Settings -> Ratings if you do not use all the ratings the extra boxes will not print on the report or show up in the program.
Items such as Cabinets, Walls, tabs can now be renamed (the items within them still cannot, will be added in the future).
Bug fixes were made to ensure that new areas could be added in the Edit Template section and renamed without problems.
Several other bug fixes were made.

For those of you who are a bit behind, What was added in 2.4.0

Documents - You now have the ability to add an unlimited number of documents into your report. These documents and be added after any section or after the cover page. You can reach this area by clicking on the Documents button. All documents are stored in the Data\Documents folder and can be moved from computer to computer. Although you can use the document in multiple templates, the location of where the documents will print is template specific. This means you must click Save Template to save this info.
Separators - In order to allow more narrative reports and flexability a separator option has been added to each table. To view this setting click on the Edit Tables button. Next to each table you have the option of the items you choose for each section to be comma separated (the default), period separated, or separated by a new line. This greatly approves the attractiveness of the report when you use longer descriptions of problems.
Logo - You can now add your company logo to the cover page. This is under Edit->Report Settings->Company Logo.
