Upcountry Maui Closeup: Makawao

Makawao is popularly known as a "paniolo" or cowboy town. Formerly the service center for area homesteads, ranches and plantations, the town has retained it's distinctly unique Old West/Hawaiian Plantation flavor.

Every July the annual Makawao Rodeo and parade commemorate its past, and every so often one will find a horse tied to a hitching post along the main thoroughfares.Today funky boutiques, quaint New Age shops, colorful restaurants and art galleries line Baldwin and Makawao Avenues. Artists and writers are drawn to the off-beat atmosphere of Makawao, as are ride-down-the-mountain cyclists and colorful Hawaiian cowboys-at-heart.

Happy New Year!!!

Here are some great ideas for fun ways to kick off the new year at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center:

January 4th: Cyndi Lauper! (Go with 'girls who want to have fun'!)
January 10th: Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen (I haven't seen them since college! I bet they are still great!)
January 11th: Warren Miller's latest extreme ski/snowboarding movie (it is such a fun annual event on Maui!)
January 12th: Jake Shimabukuro the Ukulele Virtuoso (this should be another extraordinary concert!)
January 21st & 22nd : Shanghai Circus (another popular annual event on Maui)
