erica rome: Try To Remember The Fantasticks - 06/06/22 10:51 AM
The Fantasticks is currently at the Vagabond Players in Baltimore's Fells Point. I've attended twice, once on opening night and this past weekend.

Here is an excerpt of the review By Amanda Gunther/TheatreBloom
"Directed by Jimi Kinstle with Musical Direction by Mari Hill, with live on-stage orchestrations by Erica Rome and Stephen Deininger, this one-of-a-kind cobbled-together musical of love, loss, and expectations vs reality, is a classic, of sorts, and well-performed upon the Vagabond Players' stage."
"Serving as hidden characters, though in plain view on the stage are the live musicians— Erica Rome as the pianist and Stephen Deininger as the harpist...Rome and … (7 comments)

erica rome: What Is A BaltiQWERT - 11/15/19 04:17 PM

BaltiQWERT #17
Gilbert & Sullivan Sing
Baltimore, Maryland
November 16, 2019
The works of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (known as “G&S”) have been famous in the English-speaking (and singing) world since the initial collaboration of the two in 1871. Generations of families, professionals, and theater-lovers have performed the G&S comic operas.

A "QWERT" is where G&S fans gather and sing through some or all of the operas, with scores in hand, to piano accompaniment.
There’s no staging and no dialogue, so each opera doesn’t take all that long. It's fun, fun, fun!
Being offered for years in Baltimore — therefore, the function is called a BaltiQWERT! And this Saturday … (7 comments)

erica rome: Proud Mama In Baltimore - 11/04/18 01:27 PM
So many things to be thankful for this month.
Yesterday I had the privilege of spending the entire day at MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art watching and listening to 6,0 or more, Gilbert and Sullivan singers perform.

 MICA in Baltimore

The room was filled with fun laughter and song. This show was produced by Michael Blum and Erica Rome and this was  BaltiQWERT #15.

 And what is BaltiQwert?
Check out this answer from Erica.
"A very long time ago, somewhere, the small (yet enthusiastic) Gilbert and Sullivan crowd tried to think of a name for these types of singalong events, and eventually just got frustrated and pounded on … (6 comments)

erica rome: A Proud Mother - 11/11/17 10:26 PM

This has been a wonderful day watching and listening to 40+ singers, from  Maryland, DC, NJ, NY, CT, Ohio, NH, NC and Ga,  performing Gilbert & Sullivan.

This kind of Gilbert and Sullivan singing get-together is called a “QWERT,”
so they call this BaltiQWERT because it’s in Baltimore.
This was the 13th BaltiQWERT gathering and the first time it was held at MICA.

My beautiful and talented daughter was the pianist along with Andi Stryker-Rodda.

It is so much fun to see others succeed whether another real estate agent, a good friend, a co-worker or someone in your own family.

Sharing  success is one of the best things we can do.
Many people come to  help when we are down but true friends also want to celebrate the things you are passionate about.
Whose success have you shared lately?

erica rome: Time Is The Best Kind Of Present - 12/18/15 10:02 PM
Time Is The Best Kind Of Present

And I get  the best kind of presents from my beautiful daughter.
This weekend has been a special one. My driver, Erica, picked me up last night to drive to Towson to experience a lovely evening.
Music Director Tom Hall lead the chorus, orchestra and  the audience in the singing of Handel's “Messiah.”  We all enjoyed the surround-sound of this exhilarating experience.
Erica's love of music , as a vocal coach and accompanist, was shared with me. Fun evening , Mom, daughter, music and the gift of time.

Today was another gift of time. Together we spent the afternoon at Baltimore's Hippodrome for the production of The Nutcracker.

erica rome: A Proud Mom...Baltimore Spotlighters Theatre - "A Sensation Novel"New Show - 09/12/15 01:18 PM
 A Proud Mom...
Baltimore Spotlighters Theatre
"A Sensation Novel"

There is a brand-new show at  Spotlighters  Theatre   in downtown Baltimore.  It's called "A Sensation Novel" and when I say "brand new" I mean it's an American premiere.
It has only been performed once before, in England, that we know of!  If you're familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan, this play is by that same Gilbert, but it was before he met Arthur Sullivan, so this classical music is composed by others, in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan.

The play is set in 1871, in Victorian England. The plot is just confusing enough to be really interesting--an … (7 comments)

erica rome: Happy Birthday Beautiful Daughter! - 11/05/12 10:55 AM

Happy Birthday Beautiful Daughter!  Happiness is having Erica Rome living in Baltimore and celebrating her birthday with us.  Going through photos, it is pretty amazing that this little baby girl is now a beautiful, talented, interesting young woman who makes me very proud. That bottom right picture is Erica about 2 years old using my eye make up! When I 'caught' her, the words were "don't move until I get the camera".

erica rome: Baltimore Humane Society... Maryland Public TV...Can You Adopt Hope? - 03/16/12 04:07 PM

Baltimore Humane Society...Maryland Public Television ...Can You Adopt Hope? A large group of volunteers gathered in Owings Mills this evening for a fundraiser for Maryland Public TV. There was a sea of blue shirts answering phones and taking pledges for MPT. Tonight's show was The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.  Each person who called in with a pledge was entitled to a thank you gift.  But each of my callers declined the gifts. They just wanted to ensure that the Mystery Night on MPT would continue.

erica rome: Hands of a Pianist Erica Rome - 02/17/12 12:07 PM
I am one lucky mom!  This past week I had the privilege of watching my beautiful talented daughter play Gilbert and Sullivan on her grand piano. When Is a Dining Room Not a Dining Room?  There were 25 -30 G & S singers from several states who came together with this music in common. It is a whole day of singing and laughing and lots of fun. Erica has organized several of these gatherings and is also the pianist. I admire her amazing talent and skills.                              Love to watch her play. Love to hear her music.

erica rome: My Daughter Coined the Phase MargaretSmart... - 09/05/11 01:57 PM

MargaretSmart™

First off I should point out that my daughter has coined the phrase MargaretSmart as a universal term in our family, i.e. even when she does something "MargaretSmart," it's not "EricaSmart;" she keeps my name in it.  ( Erica has given her OK to write this blog, in fact suggested it.)

So what is MargaretSmart?   These are ideas or actions that are not things learned in an academic setting or in nursing school, but things that make life a bit easier. I … (16 comments)

erica rome: My Very First Apple Product...Thanks to Erica Rome! - 09/03/11 07:53 AM
My Very First Apple Product...Thanks to Erica Rome! Last week my daughter asked what I wanted for my birthday. She knows I never want anything and am not easy to buy for. I love her phone calls, visits, special cards and notes. Gifts for occasions are not the important things with our family. Thursday night Erica picked me up, introduced  me to the Apple Store in the Towsontown Mall with lots of shops and restaurants .  Erica took charge, signed me up and we left with a brand new iPad...My Very First Apple Product. The store was crowded but our consultant … (28 comments)

erica rome: There Are No Emergencies in Real Estate! - 03/30/11 05:05 PM
In my book  Real Estate the Rome Way, "There are no emergencies in real estate."
However, there was an emergency this evening.

My daughter (who is fine now) went o the Emergency Room. I was at her house in no time for the quick trip to  Sinai Hospital, where I was a former Head Nurse.
She was taken care of quickly, and her treatment took only a few hours. That part of the emergency was handled with ease. The doctor, nurse, and the entire staff were efficient and very professional.

But now...the real emergency! How was I going to write my blog???? … (24 comments)
