gilbert and sullivan: What Is A BaltiQWERT
- 11/15/19 04:17 PM
BaltiQWERT #17 Gilbert & Sullivan Sing Baltimore, Maryland November 16, 2019 The works of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (known as “G&S”) have been famous in the English-speaking (and singing) world since the initial collaboration of the two in 1871. Generations of families, professionals, and theater-lovers have performed the G&S comic operas. A "QWERT" is where G&S fans gather and sing through some or all of the operas, with scores in hand, to piano accompaniment. There’s no staging and no dialogue, so each opera doesn’t take all that long. It's fun, fun, fun! Being offered for years in Baltimore — therefore, the function is called a BaltiQWERT! And this Saturday

So many things to be thankful for this month. Yesterday I had the privilege of spending the entire day at MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art watching and listening to 6,0 or more, Gilbert and Sullivan singers perform. MICA in Baltimore The room was filled with fun laughter and song. This show was produced by Michael Blum and Erica Rome and this was BaltiQWERT #15. And what is BaltiQwert? Check out this answer from Erica. "A very long time ago, somewhere, the small (yet enthusiastic) Gilbert and Sullivan crowd tried to think of a name for these types of singalong events, and eventually just got frustrated and pounded on

What’s a QWERT? Come and find out! The works of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (known as “G&S”) have been popular in the English-speaking (and singing) world since the initial collaboration of the two in 1871. Generations of families, professionals and theater-lovers have performed the G&S comic operas, and there have been several popular movies based on them, most recently “Topsy-Turvy." A "QWERT" is where G&S fans gather and sing through some or all of the operas, with scores in hand, to piano accompaniment. There’s no staging, and none of the dialogue is done, so each opera doesn’t take all that long. It's

gilbert and sullivan: A Proud Mother
- 11/11/17 10:26 PM
This has been a wonderful day watching and listening to 40+ singers, from Maryland, DC, NJ, NY, CT, Ohio, NH, NC and Ga, performing Gilbert & Sullivan. This kind of Gilbert and Sullivan singing get-together is called a “QWERT,” so they call this BaltiQWERT because it’s in Baltimore. This was the 13th BaltiQWERT gathering and the first time it was held at MICA. My beautiful and talented daughter was the pianist along with Andi Stryker-Rodda. Casting and program by Michael Blum.

A SENSATION NOVEL An American Premiere! Book: W.S. Gilbert Music: Michael Nash, T German Reed direction: Michael Blum musical direction: Erica Rome & Michael Blum Synopsis: W. S. Gilbert, long before he worked with Arthur Sullivan, was Victorian England's leading dramatist. In this hilarious topsy-turvy send-up of Victorian "Sensation Novels" (a genre still with us today as Romance Fiction), Gilbert gives us 5 "stock characters" who refuse to conform to society's expectations or the novel's author's plans for them --

gilbert and sullivan: A Proud Mom...Baltimore Spotlighters Theatre - "A Sensation Novel"New Show
- 09/12/15 01:18 PM
A Proud Mom... Baltimore Spotlighters Theatre "A Sensation Novel" There is a brand-new show at Spotlighters Theatre in downtown Baltimore. It's called "A Sensation Novel" and when I say "brand new" I mean it's an American premiere. It has only been performed once before, in England, that we know of! If you're familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan, this play is by that same Gilbert, but it was before he met Arthur Sullivan, so this classical music is composed by others, in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan. The play is set in 1871, in Victorian England. The plot is just confusing enough to be really interesting--an

I am one lucky mom! This past week I had the privilege of watching my beautiful talented daughter play Gilbert and Sullivan on her grand piano. When Is a Dining Room Not a Dining Room? There were 25 -30 G & S singers from several states who came together with this music in common. It is a whole day of singing and laughing and lots of fun. Erica has organized several of these gatherings and is also the pianist. I admire her amazing talent and skills. Love to watch her play. Love to hear her music.

- 08/27/08 12:36 PM
When your child shines, you glow. So you can understand why I'm proud of my talented daughter, Erica, who will be playing for the Victorian Lyric Opera Company's Gilbert & Sullivan Sing-Out this weekend. Every five years, VLOC in Rockville, MD, holds this gigantic Gilbert & Sullivan event. All thirteen (13!) light operas will be presented over three days. All will be accompanied by piano except The Grand Duke, which will be performed with full orchestra. Die-hard G&S fans have waited five years for Rockville and are traveling to Maryland this weekend either to be spectators or peformers. Here's the schedule:
