home prices: Do you look at the Dark Cloud or the Silver Lining? - 08/30/08 09:29 PM
No doubt about it... there's a lot of information in the media about the housing market.  And a lot of it sounds bad... but is it really?
Let's face it... nationally there is not a lot of good economic news.  Energy prices are up, food prices are up, homes are not selling as quickly and in many places they are selling for significantly less money.  In a national survey of 20 cities, the average price drop was almost 16%!  It would be very easy for us sitting here in Dallas to say, "Oh no!  I better wait to buy or sell … (1 comments)

home prices: It’s 2004… again! - 06/26/08 01:37 AM
I listen to the news, I read the news, I watch the news... and some days it seems no matter how I get the news, the news echoes from media outlet to media outlet.  The news item that has been echoing over the past day or so and that has me thinking a lot is actually a side observation from the recent report about national home prices that was released on Tuesday.
Dallas fared very well compared to the national numbers, but overall, the report indicated that home prices nationally have retreated to 2004 levels.  2004... that's 4 years ago!  I … (6 comments)

home prices: DFW (and Texas) Home Prices are Up… and so are my spirits! - 05/23/08 09:43 PM
It's often difficult, here in Dallas, to be a REALTOR® and also be happy about the local Real Estate news reporting.  We suffer, along with many other cities, from a media that is all too anxious to report the doom and gloom of the real estate market.  Ironically, when you compare the Dallas real estate market to the national market (and most other similar sized cities) we compare quite favorably... in fact, our market is quite healthy....
...but I don't believe you would get that impression from reading the newspaper.  And the problem that causes is that as a REALTOR® when I tell … (0 comments)

home prices: Home Values in a Changing Market - 11/12/07 12:38 PM
As a Realtor® one of the most common questions I get asked is "What is my house worth?"  In my opinion, there are two reasonable answers to that question.  One answer is that based on current knowledge or a market analysis, in your opinion their home is worth an approximate amount.  The second answer (which is perhaps more accurate, if somewhat less precise) is that their house is worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it at that moment in time.
I love to be a part of any conversation at a social gathering when the topic of home prices … (5 comments)

home prices: The Ripple Effect of Foreclosure - 11/09/07 10:42 PM
I have been listening to the radio a lot lately. I am definitely what some people would call a "news junkie", so it should not surprise anyone that I listen to a lot of National Public Radio. What prompted me to write this Blog posting is that the topic on one of the programs I listened to this week was the state of the mortgage industry and the ripple effect of foreclosures on the economy. One of the big economic impacts of foreclosures is their effect on non-foreclosure home prices in neighborhoods. As a real estate agent, I recently sold a client's … (10 comments)
