The George Washington Masonic National Memorial - 07/29/12 08:14 PM

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial sits at the top of Shooters Hill in Alexandria, Virginia -  a spot that was once the choice of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison for the new nation's capitol building. Instead, it serves as a memorial to the man who is perhaps American's most famous Mason.
The Memorial is 9-stories tall, and you can see it from much of the city of Alexandria.  I took this photo facing west on King Street. For a long time, the Memorial was a work in progress.  They laid the cornerstone in 1932, but didn't complete the spectacular … (16 comments)

Friday's Foto: Flash From The Past - 07/27/12 08:26 PM
Today, I picked up my mail and saw an envelope addressed to "Patty Kennedy".  Now, nobody has called me Patty since it was "Little Patty Kennedy".
It came from one of my mother's best friends.  She was cleaning out her old photos and found this one.  It's my mother, my sister, Joan, little Patty, my brother Jasper, and my father.  I must have been about fifteen at the time.
Even back then, I was pretty vain.  Notice I'm holding my glasses (they had Coke bottle lenses) in my hand because I didn't want them to show up on my nose in … (23 comments)

Wordless Wednesday: Washington Blooms - 07/25/12 08:08 PM
Wordless Wednesday:  Washington Blooms

Not sure what these are, but I found them on a Willie walk.  I'm looking for a tube of lipstick that is exactly this shade.  Even though a lot of the flowers here is DC have been stressed by the super hot weather, there are still some real beauties.

Friday Fotos: Flirtworthy Guy! - 07/20/12 09:02 PM

This handsome fellow is over the door of what I call the National Greenhouse.  The Botanical Gardens are on Independence Avenue at the foot of the Capitol.  It's one of those places where you can go in with a camera and have a set of Friday Foto shots for the next ent years.  So more shot of the interior will show up in later posts.

Speechless Sunday: The Pins - 07/15/12 08:35 PM

This was taken in 2004 in a little village near the west coast of Ireland, where I attended a friends wedding.  The mountains were called "The Pins", so I am told.   The bay had some fish farms, and there was an awful ot of intense green.  It's a beautiful place.  I found the disk with these photos while I was cleaning out my office this afternoon!

Last Week's Favorites: July 8th - 15th - 07/15/12 10:08 AM
This was a busy week, and luckily the temperatiure cooled off into the mid 90's!  Let's hope the summer real estate market stays as hot.  So here were my favorite hot blogs:
Roger Mucci: What do you do when one of your favorite places closes? Find another!  Roger, how did you know my favorite Chinese take out just closed?
Hella Rothwell: Newbie real estate agents, can you "indenture" them?  Sometimes it's easy for newbies to get taken advantage of.
Tammie White: Top 10% of Agents in Middle Tennessee  OK, you know who you are, and Tammie's onto you!
Kimberlee Morgan: Keeping … (28 comments)

Peirce Mill: When Much of DC Was Farmland - 07/11/12 07:38 PM

Like many of the areas wonderful old stone structures, Peirce Mill was built by an Quaker farmer who moved here from Pennsylvania.  Isaac Perce and his son Abner (a stoneworker) built this sole survivor among a long line of mills that once stood along Rock Creek.  Last September, it reopened as a working mill, grinding flour that you can actually use to bake bread!
Peirce Mill is open to the public on weekends between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM, and groups can make arrangements to see it by appointment on Wednesday through Friday - you can call to make arrangements … (29 comments)

Speechless Sunday: From a Walk in a Park - 07/08/12 08:26 PM

Tonight, I was going through some recent photos and came across this guy.  I think I took this shot in New York, but for the life of my I can't remember exactly where.   Central Park?  Riveride Park?

It's Sunday morning and time for another collection of my favorite reads from last week.  So here goes:

Janis Borgueta:  Just My Photos ~ Farms in the Hudson Valley  This photo of my favorite blooms just struck me.
Roy Kelley:  Historic John Poole House, Poolesville, Maryland  Wow!  Never knew there really was a Mr. Poole!

4701 Connecticut Avenue: Harry Truman Slept Here! - 07/04/12 08:27 PM

4701 Connecticut Avenue:  Harry Truman Slept Here!
Between January 1941 and April of 1945, Harry Truman lived with his wife Bess and daughter Margaret in Apartment 209 at 4701 Connecticut Avenue NW.  It was a 1250 square foot 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartment, with a kitchen, living room and sleeping porch.
When President Roosevelt died and Truman became the new president, the family moved to first Blair House, then to the White House.  While Mrs Truman is said to have loved their apartment at 4701, she spent most of her husband's presidency in their home back in Independence, Missouri instead of living … (15 comments)

Have a Fun and Happy 4th! - 07/04/12 09:34 AM

Tonight, there will be the giant Fourth of July fireworks display on the National Mall - unless, of course, the predicted rain shows up at sundown.
We're going to be able to watch them from the roof of the Department of Labor with some great clients who are becoming great friends.  And I'll be there with my camera and tripod, and of course, a picnic of roasted chicken and lots of great stuff to go with it.
Wherever you may be watching fireworks, have a wonderful 4th of July.

The Westchester Cooperative: If Only They Allowed Labradoodles! - 07/02/12 08:10 PM
The Westchester Cooperative
As a new real estate agent, The Westchester Cooperative fascinated me.   The complex has four buildings dating back to 1930.  It looks like is should be located on New York’s Riverside Drive, with it’s gracious pre-war architecture.
When I sold my first unit there, I remember stopping by the building manager’s desk to explain that I had a buyer with a ratified contract on one of the units, and one of the contingencies was a review of the cooperative documents, including the bylaws, house rules, and budget.
“Until he moves in, it’s none of his business, dear.”

Crestwood Storm Damage - 48 Hours Later - 07/01/12 08:02 PM
Friday night, a huge storm blew through the DC area.  And it blew really, really hard.  And when you live in a neighborhood with a whole lot of big, mature trees, it gets interesting.
After the storm, there were downed trees and power lines all over the place here in Crestwood.  And 48 hours after the storm, every single one of them is still down.
Now, when you are the Mayor of Washington, DC, nobody gets upset with you when Mother Nature hurls 90 mph winds at your city.  But they do get upset when, after 48-hours, everything looks exactly the … (10 comments)

Last Week's Favorites: June 24th - July 1st - 07/01/12 08:21 AM
It's Sunday morning again, and what a relief to be able to sit down at my desk in my office at home and be able to blog on the Big Mac!  It's been a little dodgy in these parts, with electrical power and Internet access that we could not take for granted.  And when I think about the people in Colorado, I realize that our problems with Mother Nature pale in comparison.  So, here goes with today's list:
Tammie White: Don't Hire a Cleaning Lady to Clean Your House on the Day of Closing In these parts, "Broom Clean" is the … (34 comments)
