You don’t have to love the furniture and staging props that your agent might employ to transform your home into Buyer Bait.
In my market, many of my transactions involve downsizing baby boomers selling to move-up millennials, Many of whom are HGTV addicts. And while a lot of the ideas one gets from "The Property Brothers" or "Love It or List It" do have cross-generational appeal, most of the homes that boomers are selling are filled with lots of dark wood, oriental rugs and family antiques. When I'm working as a buyer broker, I try to help people look beyond great staging. I've even written posts advising buyers to understand that when they walk into a well-staged house, they are more likely to wind up paying more because the property will be much more attractive to more buyers. But when I'm the listing agent, I work very hard to convince the sellers that having their home professionally staged is really a wonderful idea.
