open house: The Open House Helpers - 04/10/11 10:11 PM
Today, I had a busy Open House in Arlington's Cherrydale.  So busy, in fact, that not only was it an opportunity for me to find buyers and maybe earn a bit of income.  It was also an opportunity for some young entrepreneurs next door to turn a little profit.
People were in and out of the house all afternoon, many families with young children.  And in some cases, the parents were looking at the house in shifts, with one coming in while the other stayed in the car with the children, then they would trade off.
And to make sure that … (22 comments)

open house: House For Sale in DC's Palisades: Calling All Bungalow Lovers! - 06/19/10 02:32 PM

House For Sale in DC's Palisades:  Calling All Bungalow Lovers!
Every once in a while, I walk into a house that just flirts - shamelessly!  And last Tuesday morning when my office previewed Nancy Hammond's new listing at 5400 Galena Place NW, my heart did a flip flop!
This home has been renovated and expanded with total respect for its original craftsman style.  The beamed ceilings in the living and rooms look like they were part of the original 1928 plan.  Same with the mahogany inlays in some of the floors.
The addition includes  a wonderful kitchen that is state-of-the-art … (15 comments)

open house: Whine! Moan! I Held An Open House And Only The Nosy Neighbors Showed Up! - 12/31/09 08:20 PM
Whine!  Moan!  I Held An Open House And Only The Nosy Neighbors Showed Up!
Um... and this is a bad thing?
Let me share a couple of stories about a little nosy neighbor magic.
I had a new listing and the first weekend held it open Saturday by invitation only just for the "nosy" neighbors.  On Sunday, the Open with the ad in the Washington Post and all that, one of these "nosy" neighbors came by with a co-worker who bought the place.  This has actually happened to me several times over the years.
Another time, the "nosy" neighbors were … (51 comments)

open house: I'm Just Not In The Mood! - 12/27/08 11:36 PM
Tomorrow, I'm doing an Open House.  I'd rather not.
I said I would, and sometimes we do stuff just because we said we would!  This is one of those times.
There are a bunch of things I'd rather do -
go to the movies and see "Marley and Me" go shopping visit friends clean my sock drawer It's cold and the heat isn't working quite as well as I'd like it to in this house.  (Too bad, Pat!  Wear a sweater!)  They don't have a wireless signal and I won't be able to blog.  (You can write a post and put … (32 comments)

open house: Today, I Held Open A Listing That Was Hot! Hot! Hot! - 07/13/08 09:00 PM
There are good hot listings, and there are bad hot listings! This was not a good hot listing.  Well, it is a good hot listing, but today it was also a bad hot listing. The fancy new central air conditioning system was not doing its thing.  I spent the afternoon sweating like a pig.  It could be have been worse.  I could have been in Texas.  Today, temperatures here are only in the high 80’s, and the ceiling fans are creating a little breeze.  There were some people back for a second look, and they were laughing about how hot some of the … (21 comments)

open house: No Time For Blogging! - 03/02/08 09:38 PM
I’ve found that whenever I bring stuff to do to an Open House, you know, in case there’s a little down time, down time just doesn’t happen.  Today, I was ready for anything, with a really good book and my MacBook Air, and I didn’t get a chance to open either of them. So, maybe it’s just part of the psycho-physics of holding an Open.  If you’re prepared to keep busy in case of a lull, will you get a mob scene?Oh, but there is one other part of the equation!  I did a mailing, put a notice on Craig’s List, had … (23 comments)

open house: So Many Birds! Just One Stone! - 09/15/07 06:11 PM

Last night, I did something really fun, and certainly worth blogging about.  Phyllis Patterson is a colleague at Coldwell Banker, and she works out of their Old Town Office in Alexandria, VA.   She hired my chamber group to help “stage” a house she’s just listed for a very different kind of Open House. Here are the basics of what she did: First, it’s a beautiful home – new construction in Wellington, a neighborhood of the George Washington Memorial Parkway north of Old Town.  Second, Diane Duston, who staged this home, used a minimalist approach I love.  Her staging does not … (23 comments)
