sms: Smartphone Envy? - 01/24/08 02:19 PM
By: Chris Brubaker Receiving email on your cell phone was once reserved for those with data plans and smartphones. Not any longer. One company getting rid of smart phone envy is teleflip with FlipMail. Plain and simple it allows you to send and receive email on your cell phone through text messaging. I know what most of you are probably thinking, you receive 200+ spam messages a day and 200 emails would equal 200+ text messages...ouch. Rest assured the company has a work around for you. Instead of receiving every message, you get to specify the email addresses of the people you

sms: Text Messaging Turns 15 - 12/05/07 06:01 PM
By: Chris Brubaker Happy Birthday text messaging. It’s been 15 years now since the first text message was sent. In December 1992, a company called Airwide Solutions had one of its employees send the very first text message which read “Merry Christmas”. Few realized what the new technology would offer, yet as the technology expanded text messaging would grow for the next 15 years at astounding rates. In 1995, three years after the first text message was sent consumers that had access to text messaging were sending texts at a rate of .4 texts per user per month. Jump five years

sms: Talking Text - 12/04/07 05:33 PM
By: Chris Brubaker Photo Courtesy of Erlingsi With only 160 characters of text available in a text message, how do you squeeze in a whole conversation? Easy, by forgetting everything you learned in 9th grade English class, (if you haven’t already) and making it up as you go. You’ve heard the old saying “It’s like their speaking a different language” usually by parents talking about their kids, well this time it’s partially true. With the limited amount of characters allowed per text, avid texters have found a way to get their message across using the fewest amount of letters

sms: Better than Sliced Bread - 11/30/07 05:32 PM
By: Chris Brubaker There are three things in life you can be sure of death, taxes, and waiting in line at an amusement park. In today’s world of self check out, drive thru, and instant credit card payments people just don’t like waiting. When attending a theme park wait times for rides can get upwards of 45 minutes to an hour, for a ride that usually lasts less than 5 minutes. Parks have tried everything from building more rides to VIP passes (pay more for a ticket to skip the lines), while those do remedy some of the congestion long

By: Chris Brubaker I am a giant pizza lover, given the option I will pick pizza over anything else…anything. So you probably wouldn’t be surprised by how excited I was to be able to order pizza anytime anywhere simply by texting. The pizza industry is finally following suit of many other industries such as real estate (HouseFront) or the airline industry. Bringing this to the pizza industry in the US first is Papa John’s. By texting to 4PAPA (47272) you can have a pizza delivered to your home or available for pickup. To use the system you have to set

sms: The New Cubicle - 10/22/07 11:57 AM
When someone tells you to picture an office what do you see? Most people will describe an environment filled with cubicle after cubicle. Many office jokes are based around this simple office furniture, yet the actual intent of the cubicle was to keep employees productive and focused, whether or not this is the case is up for debate. Lately there has been a shift with new companies shying away from using the cubicle and leaning towards open environments. Yet the issue of productivity and the ability to keep focused still remain. When researching this issue here at HouseFront I came

sms: National Text Message Alert System - 10/12/07 03:12 PM
Last Thursday we wrote a post on San Francisco’s earthquake alert system (Read it here). A reader informed us about the national SMS emergency alert system (thanks Sean). The system is designed to work in conjunction with the EAS (Emergency Alert System), the same system that you hear or see on the TV and radio every now and then (you know the ”this is only a test…”). The SMS system will actually be a part of a new emergency alert system titled DEAS (Digital Emergency Alert System). The system got its start in 2004 when The Department of Homeland
