executive coaching in armonk ny: DO YOU COACH YOUR TEAM? - 09/03/17 08:16 PM

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.” That line from the movie Cool Hand Luke highlights a fundamental problem. There are many times in our business and personal lives where we don’t achieve a desired result from directing, explaining, or urging action. I would like to concentrate here on the “urging action.”
Dwight Eisenhower said, “Leadership is getting people to do what YOU want them to do because THEY want to do it.”
Let’s now use that quote and relate it to coaching. Coaching is not telling people what they need to do. On the contrary. It is helping them find … (25 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: SKILLS ALONE WILL NOT MAKE YOUR REAL ESTATE TEAM SUCCESSFUL - 02/05/17 12:32 PM
I strongly believe that you must select people with share values for your real estate team or any other team.  Most successful groups select people with shared values and who match the team and company culture. For certain types of positions it is very important to hire the people that have the core competencies.  But it is just as important that each new hire shares the organizations values. Most experienced managers will attest to the fact that most of the terminations occur not because of skills but because of attitude and values.
In Westchester County New York I have worked with many … (27 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: WHAT ARE YOUR NATURAL TALENTS? - 01/08/17 07:47 PM

Every day do you have the opportuntiy to do what you do best?  We make the best decisions when rely on our strengths rather than try to shore up your weaknesses.
According to some psychologists 88% of the decisions you make on a daily basis rely on your natural talents and tendencies and that these are part of your subconscious.
Your subconscious is an important, powerful, and much needed tool. The subconscious handles all of your basic physical functions like breathing, your heart rate, your immune system, etc. The subconscious mind holds the blueprint of your body as it is now … (41 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: THERE IS NO MORE TIME - 12/25/16 10:10 PM

Do you have more work each day than you have time in the day? If that is the case time may be managing you rather than the other way around. My Westchester County NY business owners tell me that one of their biggest challenges is having enough time. We all have 24 hours a day. No one has more time. It may appear that way because of the way they make time work for them. Unfortunately, many of us feel overwhelmed and that causes them to see their life spinning out of control.
Having a system in place will not alone … (34 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: ARE YOU ABLE TO SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES? - 12/18/16 11:20 AM
Are you spending so much time working IN your business that you never get around to working ON your business?
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Melissa Zavala also mentioned working ON vs IN your business in her blog Watch Out Your Sales Pipeline May Be in Danger.   I talk about E Myth all the time in my entrepreneurs program.  Here is my spin on it.
Michael Gerber discusses this in his book “The E Myth Revisited.”  The E-Myth or the entrepreneurial myth as described by Gerber incorrectly assumes that the desire of the new business owner or entrepreneur, plus capital, plus … (32 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: HOW ARE YOU COMMUNICATING? - 12/11/16 09:22 PM

Lack of Communication can cause all types of problems.  It affects our personal relationships and our business relationships.
Think about the last time you did something but it did not turn out as you expected.  Chances are it had something to do with your communication.  Perhaps you have learned from this and gotten a "Do Over" that you would like to share in this month's contest.  For those who haven't, here are some thoughts to consider.

We communicate to get an expected response from someone else. But sometimes, in fact often, we do not get the response we expect.
One powerful reason for … (44 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: MOTIVATION IS THE KEY TO GOAL ACHIEVEMENT - 12/04/16 09:45 PM
You cannot motivate someone to achieve. The only thing you can do is create a spark that will build the fire of motivation from within. That inner fire will drive motivation.
What about you? Do you have something burning inside you? Frankly, if you do not have the WHY the HOW will not matter. We can also refer to that WHY as your PASSION.
Motivation and goal achievement are interrelated. Knowing what motivates you is a key to achievement and knowing how to find motivation in others is a key to leadership. Dwight Eisenhower said that leadership is getting others to do … (25 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: YOU CAN'T HAVE THE BIG GAINS WITHOUT RISK - 11/13/16 11:17 AM

We know that being in real estate can be rewarding.  But we also know that with that reward comes risk.  If you do not want the risk it is best to get a regular job.
Taking control of your own future involves taking responsibility for loss but you also get to have all of the gain.  But, you must be ready to step out of your comfort zone.  When you step out of your comfort zone you begin to see real progress.
I was recently coaching a Westchester County NY business executive. She wants to advance in her career. She has … (25 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: DO THE PEOPLE ON YOUR REAL ESTATE TEAM COLLABORATE? - 10/30/16 01:06 PM

More is not necessarily more when is comes to a real estate office.  Just this last week I encountered a broker that believes this but his office's reputation does not bear that out.  What will turn things around?  Becoming an authentic leader and encouraging a collaborative team will turn thing around.
According to a Harvard professor, William George effective leaders are authentic leaders. Authentic leaders are self-aware, practice their values and principles, seek criticism and “stay grounded.” Above all, they empower others to become leaders themselves.
Strong leaders have courage to challenge the status quo and point out failures in the organization. They … (48 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: THE PURPOSE OF A LEADER IS TO INSPIRE - 10/09/16 11:33 AM

Does your leadership lack inspiration, innovation, and the ability to adapt to change? As a leader your role is to navigate your organization or your team through the uncertainties. Sometimes the good and necessary management skills such as planning, directing and controlling create roadblocks because they are missing the inspirational leadership.
The reason that a team is not achieving desired outcomes is usually traced back to the leadership. That’s right. If all of the students fail the exam, then the fault lies with the teaching. Like students you and your staff may not be on the same page.
You may be … (29 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: MAINTAIN CONTROL BUT DON'T BE A CONTROL FREAK - 09/04/16 02:12 PM

George S. Patton said, “Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.”
As leader of your team you need to be in control of your business BUT you don’t need to be a control freak. Taking that route leads to being overwhelmed. As a sole entrepreneur you, of course, need to control everything but once you decide to grow being a control freak will hold you back.
Once you hire employees or take on a team your job becomes managing results of others rather than doing everything yourself. If you … (64 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: HOW TO SELECT A GREAT TEAM MEMBER - 08/21/16 10:16 AM

This may sound counter intuitive but I would urge you never to select someone as an employee or agent based on their experience.

That may be somewhat of an exaggeration.  What I am saying is really don't base your decision solely on experience.  One of the biggest mistakes a business and hiring manager makes is hiring based solely on experience. I have seen the business owners in Westchester County New York beginning to understand this.
In my last blog I spoke about leading indicators. Business owners will do well to base their decisions on these indicators. This brings me to the point of … (48 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: HOW DO YOU SPELL SUCCESS? - 08/14/16 10:52 AM
Would you like to know how to spell success?  Similar to the Rolaids commercial of years ago which asked, "How do you spell relief?"  there is also an answer to How do you spell success?
You find success by doing and measuring things that will lead to results.  To quote the investment commercials, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results." Just because you were successful in the past does not mean you will be successful in the future. You need to measure leading indicators.  I work with business owners in Westchester County New York who define success through their vision, their … (67 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: DON'T FORM A REAL ESTATE TEAM UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO WORK HARDER - 07/05/16 11:32 AM

I would tell anyone who wants to create a team, "Don't think about it unless you are willing to to do extra work." Creating a successful team requires right actions including careful selections and training and mentoring.  And then you have the challenge of retaining those high performers by keeping them engaged and producing results. Engaged agents will lead to loyal customers and loyal customers will lead to a sustainable business. In our business climate it is not enough to be good, we must exceed our customers’ expectations.
But there is more.  There is no "I" in team so it does … (64 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: EMPOWERMENT NOT MICRO MANAGEMENT - 06/26/16 11:43 AM

Do you, as a broker or team leader, ever feel that you can not find qualified people to work in your office?
I hear it all the time. People say they cannot find qualified employees to take ownership yet they hold control and try to do too much themselves.  There is a better way and management teams in Westchester County NY have been working on changing from micro managing control to better method of empowerment and accountability. Clearly empowerment of staff creates better outcomes.
Unfortunately, managers and executives find it very hard to let go and allow their staff to drive results. … (28 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: HOW WELL DO YOU COMMUNICATE? - 05/22/16 11:58 AM

How are your  communication skills? Are you getting the expected response?
Your communication may seem clear to you but if you do not get the response you expect then your communication has failed.  If you are sending a message you must make sure you understand the receiver of that message.
There has been much discussion on Active Rain about communication with Millennials.  This is just one case in point.  Communication can never be assumed with anyone.  Communication is a two way process.  The sender of of message whether in person, by phone, email, or text must be certain through feedback that message has … (31 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: EVERY DAY I GET TO DO WHAT I DO BEST - 05/01/16 12:30 PM
Do you feel that you are doing what you do best every day?  What about your team and your agents?  Can they say the same thing?
You know the expression that you can't put a square peg in a round hole.  Forcing  it in will not lead to very good results.  But you might say I need them where I need them.  You and the team will be more successful, however, if you utilize the top talents of everyone.  Jim Collins who wrote, “Good to Great” refers to this as getting the right people in the right seats.
Help your team use … (40 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: LEADERSHIP DEPENDS ON YOUR SITUATION - 12/13/15 11:34 AM
Different situations call for different types of leadership.  One size does not fit all.   For example, a real estate broker or team leader will need to apply a different type of leadership that that of a general manager of a restaurant.
Not only that but I also don’t believe that people have been born with something that makes them a good leader. One trait of a successful leader could be a liability in someone else’s leadership.
A great leader is effective and effectiveness means understanding the situation, the team, and the desired results.
Rather than being born with certain traits leadership can be developed. … (17 comments)

executive coaching in armonk ny: HAVE YOU UPDATED YOUR BUSINESS PLAN FOR 2016? - 12/06/15 09:42 AM
What is the difference between working IN your real estate business and working ON your real estate business.  The answer lies in strategic planning.  If you are looking for results you need to plan for them.  If you fail to plan you are planning to fail.
Everyone should be working on their goals and business plans for 2016.  And don't forget to work on personal goals as well.  Your personal goals affect your business goals and it is important to maintain a work life balance. Right now I am working with businesses and executives in Westchester County New York on their annual … (53 comments)
