South Bay Galleria, in partnership with Designing Women South Bay, a women’s guild in support of Working Wardrobes, is proud to announce the Reinvent, Recycle & Reuse Clothing Drive to collect professional clothing for those less fortunate women who are trying to re-enter the workforce. The clothing drive will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the South Bay Galleria’s own retail space located on Level 3 of the mall near the AMC Theater. Guests are invited to drop off on hangers, clean, gently used, women’s professional clothing, such as skirts, slacks, suits, and tops, as well as purses, shoes and accessories. These items will be donated to Working Wardrobes’ Women’s Career Success Program to aid job-seeking women in the community.

10 Tips for Decorating Small Spaces in the South Bay

The smallest home I’ve ever lived in was less than 800 square feet. It was fine for my husband and me, but when children started coming along, we looked for bigger digs and moved way up to 1100 square feet!

Some people, however, have even less space to call their own, or at least have small rooms to deal with. Here are ten helpful tips to make the most of your space-lessness.

1) Make a list of everything you need that room to do……on paper…..in writing. Think function, function, function.

2) Plan for necessary furniture (try arranging on paper or computer first – many furniture stores have an online program you can use to try variations). Some rooms need furniture pulled away from walls – others need it up against walls.

3) Think double-duty for furniture – ottomans that will hold blankets, tables that have fold-down sides or can moved against the wall when fewer seats are needed – even used as a desk if absolutely necessary. Armless furniture will also make a space feel larger. Chairs can be pulled around where necessary.

4) Glass tables will make a room feel less hemmed-in. Speaking of glass – keep all reflective surfaces sparkling clean, whether on windows, TV screens, dishwasher, artwork or tables. Your eye glides over and it creates the illusion of more space!

5) Keep contrast low. This means that walls, floors & furniture should be in similar tones. For instance, if walls are a very pale blue (more on that in a minute), the sofa can be white or other light color & the window treatments similar to walls. Higher contrast will bring drama, but will also make your space feel smaller. You can still bring color in with your accessories – artwork, pillows, throws, vases, etc.

6) Speaking of walls….don’t think that white is always your best bet. White really only works great in a few instances. Add some personality with color. Cool colors tend to recede, making a space feel larger. That means choose a light “clean” color as opposed to a “muddy,” muted, warm tone.

7) Keep window treatments on the simple side, using the same type within a visible area. Consider adding texture with woven blinds, simple panels or even roller shades with fabric.

8) Go up! Since floor space is limited, use your vertical space. Narrow bookcase and cabinets can make a world of difference both for practical storage and for display.

9) Keep clutter to a minimum. Few larger accessories will work much better than many small ones.

10) And finally, an oldie but goodie, hang those mirrors, especially large ones or a group of small ones. Try to make them reflect something attractive, however.

The route makes a left onto Pier Avenue, turns left on Hermosa Avenue and ends at Hermosa Avenue and 10th street.

The Cancer Support Community presents the Undiscovered Chefs Gala on Sunday, March 18th. Spend the day immersed in culinary education with one of the South Bay’s founding fathers of food, Michael Franks of Chez Melange. Things to Do in the Beach Cities

The Beach Cities give a great place to run & raise money for worthy causes at the same time. Thanks to Jackie Balestra, we don't have to miss a thing!

This Sunday, February 12th marks the return - after a two year hiatus - of the 58th Annual John Hales Sand & Strand Run in Hermosa Beach. Proceeds will benefit Project Touch, a non-profit organization working with at-risk teens in the South Bay. There are four separate races scheduled with the event getting under way at 8:00 am at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Event registration is available on-line at www.active.com.

Also this Sunday, Adia Cares hosts the symposium, Beginning the Conversation. This is a free community event where you will learn how to begin the discussion about planning for the care of an older loved one. It looks like it’s going to be another gorgeous weekend here in the South Bay….that’s why we live here!

It’s time to put on your dancin’ shoes! Walk In Dance Out hosts Swing n’ Sway this Friday, January 13th at the Knights of Columbus. The event runs from 7:00 to 10:00 pm and admission is $8 per person. The Knights of Columbus is located at 214 Avenue I in Riviera Village in Redondo Beach. The Neptunian Women’s Club presents Lights, Camera, Fundraiser! thisSaturday night, January 14th in celebration of the Manhattan Beach centennial – yes, Manhattan Beach turns 100 this year. The event runs from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and features live music by Feed the Kitty. Tickets are $75 per person and can be charged by phone at 310-977-8360. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit education, scholarships and local children’s charities.

If you’re a metal head, you don’t want to miss the Rock-n-Roll GangStar pre-NAMM Festival & Jam this Saturday, January 14th starting at 3:00 pm and running until 1:30 am. The event takes place at Delzanos, Naja’s and Louie Luey’s on the International Boardwalk at Redondo Beach Pier. Great White will be playing along with 13 other hard rock and heavy metal bands. There’ll be an All-Star Jam, Rock n’ Roll Comedy Show, Rock n’ Roll Karaoke, food and drink specials and admission is free until 8:00 pm. (BTW - NAMM stands for National Association of Music Merchants whose trade show will be held at Anaheim Stadium this January 19 - 22.)

Burn Your Tree on Dockweiler State Beach!

Now this is a South Bay Activity I never thought of before. Check out the Christmas Tree Bonfire and other local events from Jackie Balestra.

Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to get back to our everyday, fabulous South Bay lifestyle.

Tonight - January 5th - head to downtown Hermosa Beach for First Thursdays. This monthly event runs from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with participating shops and businesses offering special discounts, giveaways and other cool stuff. The evening also features live music and children’s activities.

Manhattan Beach hosts its First Fridays event this Friday night, January 6th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Select stores, restaurants and businesses below Valley Drive, west to the pier and surrounding streets, will be participating. Mix, mingle, meet up with old friends and make a few new ones downtown after sundown.

The Riviera Village Farmers’ Market takes place this and every Friday on Avenue I between Catalina Avenue and the Esplanade from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Speaking of farmers’ markets, did you know there are 13 different farmers’ markets in the South Bay every week? Gardena, Hawthorne and Torrance markets take place every Saturday with Palos Verdes/Rolling Hills happening on Sunday.

Don’t toss that Christmas tree just yet! This Saturday night, January 7th, head to Dockweiler State Beach for the 1st Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire. This is a Joe Terry Production, people! Joe has several Christmas trees from neighbors that he intends to use to create a bonfire that can be seen from Space! Additional wood will be donated by Learned Lumber. The event starts at 5:00 and should go to about 9:00 pm. Plan on bringing everything you’ll need: chairs, blankets, food and drinks and don’t forget the marshmallows! Parking in one of the lots costs between $3 and $8 but there is free parking on the street if you get there early enough.

Triton Mixed Martial Arts Center offers a free women’s self-defense class every Monday morning at their training facility in Gold’s Gym on Harbor Drive. This very valuable service is available free for women of every age and you don’t have to be a member of Gold’s or Triton to participate. Just check in at the front desk.

It's Snowing in Hermosa Beach

Living in Los Angeles County and especially the South Bay doesn't give us many opportunities to play in the snow unless we make a trip to the mountains, so here is your chance to play in Hermosa Beach's snow, along with other great happenings gathered by Jackie Balestra at SouthBaybyJackie.com.

City 2 Sea is the newest program from Kids & Fishing, a volunteer environmental/educational non-profit organization focused on educating and expanding young minds from the inner-city through marine science and environmental awareness. City 2 Sea is setting out aboard a 38’ cruising classroom on Saturday, December 10th for a Scientific Exploration Expedition with 25 students from the Animo Leadership Charter High School in Inglewood. The City of Hermosa Beach invites everyone to compete in the annual Sand Snowman Contest. The event takes place on Saturday, December 10th. Registration starts at 8:45 am north of the Hermosa Pier at shoreline. Prizes will be awarded for the Most Unique, Most Traditional, Best Dressed, Hermosa Beach Favorite and Funniest. Judging begins at 11:15 am with awards being presented at 11:30 am.

After admiring your sand creation and have taken the requisite photos, walk up Pier Avenue for something you don’t see in the Southland often – snow!

The City of Hermosa Beach hosts the 2nd Annual Snow Fest on Saturday, December 10th from 12:00 to 8:00 pm. There will be over 60 tons of snow covering the slope of Pier Avenue, making for an even bigger and better snow park than last year. Snowboarders from the Pro-Am and College circuits will show off their moves on the slope from 1:30 to 4:30 pm and kids under 15 will get a chance to go sledding for free from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. A separate snow area for children under five will be located on Pier Plaza by the Holiday Tree. The event also features live music, games, giveaways, tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus.

The King Harbor Yacht Club presents the 20th Annual King Harbor Christmas Boat Parade on Saturday, December 10, 2011. This popular South Bay event gets under way at 5:30 pm in the main channel of King Harbor in Redondo Beach and is a longtime favorite of locals and visitors to the area. If you plan to observe from shore, you can do so from any number of vantage points in King Harbor, from the Redondo Beach Pier and several restaurants with harbor views.

The City of El Segundo presents the 48th Annual Holiday Parade celebrating the theme 100 Years of Holidays on Sunday, December 11, 2011. The parade gets underway at 1:00 pm and is expected to end about 3:00 pm. The route begins on Main Street at Imperial Avenue and proceeds south to El Segundo Boulevard.

The City of Manhattan Beach presents the 22nd Annual Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks extravaganza on Sunday, December 11, 2011. This year, over 15,000 people are expected to gather in the streets and on the beaches of downtown Manhattan Beach for this hugely popular event. The festivities begin at 4:00 pm with Santa making his entrance aboard the Chamber of Commerce float. Skechers’ Snow Park will be open from 4:00 to 6:30 pm with five 50 foot sled runs, two snow play areas and snowmen available for family photos. A donation of canned goods, cash or a new, unwrapped toy is requested for admission to the Snow Park. The fireworks start at 7:00 with an extended grand finale.

South Bay Galleria invites you to bring your pet in for photos with Santa every Monday and Thursday through December 13th. They request you bring your pets through the Galleria’s west entry near Kingsdale. Visit the website for more information at www.southbaygalleria.com.

Should a Seller “Stage” Their South Bay Home for the Holidays?

Your home can especially stand out above the competition during “the most wonderful time of the year.” From Halloween through New Year’s, home shoppers during the busy holidays are typically very serious, looking for that perfect home that calls to them. The right amount of holiday decorations can make your home even more welcoming and desirable.

This is not the time to empty every box in your holiday inventory, however. Overdoing it with cutesy items on every surface is likely to distract from the home itself, defeating the purpose.

Staging should always be about highlighting the best of what your home has to offer and making it feel like “home.” Try using 50% of less of your decorations and make occasional tasteful “statements,” rather than decorating every surface.

A wreath or fresh greenery on the exterior of the entry door makes a good impression and puts people in a buying mood. Rosemary topiaries add a lovely scent to the entry – inside or out.

Any exterior lights should be minimal and only one color, but do highlight trees and architectural details. Of course, no plastic inflatables on the lawn - curb appeal is still vital.

If there is a Christmas tree, keep it moderate in size (unless it’s in a large front window). Limiting the colors to no more than three will be beautiful without being distracting. Keep presents put away until Christmas morning for space and safety. Do stylishly decorate the mantle, but make sure stockings don’t have personal names on them.

Set the dining room for a party and highlight other areas for entertaining. Candles and cinnamon pine cones in a nice bowl or basket are excellent simple decorations, as well as a being a lovely centerpiece for the table.

LED window candles in the front windows welcome buyers to come in and experience your home. Remember, moderation is the key.

Do make sure to put away all Christmas decorations by New Year’s Day. They quickly change from lovely to out-dated as the season ends. Focus on making your home warm, inviting, cheerful and uncluttered – especially during this season.

Beach Cities' Holiday Activities Begin December 1, 2011

Redondo Beach:

Riviera Village is hosting the annual Holiday Stroll today, Thursday, December 1st from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Many of the shops offers snacks and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic but this is a local secret so keep it to yourself). This is a very popular and fun event, so gather a few friends and let the shopping begin!

Don’t forget, Triton Mixed Martial Arts Center offers a free women’s self-defense class every Monday morning at their training facility in Gold’s Gym on Harbor Drive. Hermosa Beach:

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be attending and there’ll be holiday carolers providing the tunes of the season. Bring an unwrapped toy for the Beach Cities Toy Drive.

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce hosts First Thursdays which takes place in Downtown Hermosa the first Thursday of each month, that’s today. Participating businesses will feature events, specials, music and other cool stuff from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Hermosa Beach Young Professionals is hosting a mixer at Sangria tonight starting at 5:30. They request you bring an unwrapped toy or $10 donation.

Manhattan Beach:

Also tonight, The North Manhattan Beach Business District invites you to celebrate the season the South Bay way with a Holiday Open House & Walk About. Shops, businesses and restaurants will stay open late for an evening of music, shopping and dining. Santa Claus will be at Verandas (he sure does get around) so bring your wish list and camera. Walk With Sally is hosting a toy drive and donations of new, unwrapped toys are most appreciated. The event is from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Santa Claus will be at Manhattan Village for photo ops through December 24th. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Home Tour:

The Sandpipers Holiday Homes Tour 2011 kicks off on Friday, December 2nd and runs through Sunday, December 4th. Celebrate the season and tour distinctive South Bay homes exquisitely decorated for the holidays. Presale tickets are $25 and can be purchase online at www.sandpipers.org. Tickets are $30 at the door.

South Bay Galleria:

This Saturday, December 3, 2011, the South Bay Galleria presents 1,000 Points of Lights, a symbolic gesture of peace and joy. The first 1,000 volunteers who sign up to sing Christmas carols will receive a free candle and t-shirt. Register at the Guest Services desk on Level 1 in the Nordstrom wing.

Cannery Row Studios presents their Holiday Boutique on Saturday, December 3rd and Sunday, December 4th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you’re looking for something unique for someone special, don’t miss this event.

El Segundo:

Did you know there are free holiday hay rides every Saturday through December 17th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at Plaza El Segundo? The rides are located at three different locations throughout the shopping center.

The South Bay is a great place to be during the holiday season. Jackie Balestra (www.southbaybyjackie.com) and I both wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving. Besides feasting with friends and family, enjoy the upcoming South Bay activities.

The 32nd Annual Torrance Turkey Trot. The Trot starts at 8:00 am on Thursday, November 24th, Thanksgiving morning, from Sam’s Club in Torrance.

The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. Please be sure to patronize your local shops this Black Friday. They’ll be offering some great deals!

Why not take the visiting relatives to King Harbor for a free tour of the tall ship, Lady Washington? She’ll be moored at the Redondo Beach Marina and will be offering free tours and sailing expeditions ($35 per person) starting on Friday, November 25th and running through Wednesday, November 30th.

Santa will be available for photo ops at the Manhattan Village Mall beginning Friday, November 25th through December 19th.

Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra, December 3, 2011 (Free Performance)

The Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra just happens to be my favorite orchestra in the world. Warning: I might be biased, since my daughter is a principle violist. They do play beautiful music and always have some wonderful local soloists at each concert, usually high school students.

This year's Christmas concert will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Crestridge, just before Highridge in PV.

Admission is free, but come early as seating is limited.

Harbor City - Sold to First Buyer to Walk Through the Door

Selling a manufactured home in a "trailer park" is not always the easiest thing to do. With a great realtor who took the time to paint the walls and replace the dining area light fixture, we had a good footprint to work with, even though we were using existing older furniture.

We de-stage Friday after only 30 days, and it closes on Monday. The new buyers are so excited to have found a move-in ready home.

This property continues our 100% success rate for 2011 - every vacant home we have staged BEFORE it went on the market has sold the first week (usually after the first weekend)!

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau host the 2nd Annual Sidewalk Festival in Downtown Hermosa Beach on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from noon until 8:00 pm. The event will feature live music, children’s activities, special offers from local businesses and of course, a visit from the jolly, fat man, himself, Santa Claus. So slip into comfortable footwear, gather a few friends for a quick round of cocktails and get some shopping done!

ArtLife Gallery is celebrating their first year in business this Friday, November 18, 2011 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. They’ll be featuring a group exhibition by local fine artists, cocktails, appetizers and live music. Take a moment to stop by and maybe pick up a gift for someone on your list. ArtLife Gallery is located in Plaza El Segundo.

One of my favorite South Bay bands, Smokin’ Smitty & the Masters of Music will be playing at a couple of local venues this weekend. The band features former members of Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown’s and Ike & Tina Turner’s bands. They’ll be rockin’ the house at Baleen at Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am and at Shark’s Cove on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at 8:00 pm. You better wear your dancin’ shoes!

What to do on a Rainy Weekend in the South Bay

Jackie Balestra finds things for us to do even if we get one of those pounding rainstorms....

The weekend forecast calls for rain. Yes, it does rain in Southern California every now and then, but there’s no need to panic because there are several indoor activities taking place here in the South Bay.

A new art exhibit offers an opportunity to discover the facts behind the infamous Mayan predictions and prophecies. Cannery Row Studios presents artist Carlotta Giangualano’s exhibit End of Days: Feast of the Jaguars.

The opening night reception takes place on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm and features a classic pre-Columbian ceremonial musical performance. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, November 12, 2011 the gallery will host an authentic Mayan dinner and lecture by the artist from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Advance tickets are $45, at the door, $50. The exhibit runs from November 11th through November 18th.

Don’t forget that the circus is in town! Circus Vargas has set up the big top at Del Amo Mall on the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard just south of Torrance Boulevard. Tickets start at $15 for children and $25 for adults.

Plaza El Segundo and ArtLife Galleries host Art Walk every second Saturday of each month from noon to 6:00 pm. This Saturday, November 12, 2011, celebrate local artists, watch live art demonstrations and participate in hands-on art workshops, all for free. This event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

This Friday, November 11, 2011 is Veterans Day and there are events throughout the South Bay to observe the holiday.

The Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial Task Force and the City of Redondo Beach invite South Bay veterans and residents to attend the 10th annual "Honor Our Veterans" Tribute on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park, located adjacent to the Redondo Beach Pier. The Elks Lodge will host a barbecue after the service at 300 The Esplanade in Redondo Beach. The barbecue is free for all veterans and members of the military. All others pay $5. RSVP to KarenBuchanan@hotmail.com. For more information about the barbecue, call Herb Masi at 310-993-4637.

The Gardena VFW Post and Auxiliary 3261 will host its annual Veterans Day Barbecue and Bingo event. The menu includes ribs with all the fixings or hamburger/hot dog with all the trimmings. The event runs from noon to 4 pm on Friday at 1822 West 162nd Street in Gardena.

Manhattan Beach hosts the 14th Annual Veterans Day Multi-Generation Event on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Veterans Monument at Veterans Parkway on Valley Drive and 15th Street in Manhattan Beach. There’ll be live music with guest speakers and dignitaries and a Presentation of the Colors by the MB Police Department Color Guard. For more information, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at (310) 802-5448. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Joslyn Community Center located at 1601 Valley Drive.

The Circus Comes to the South Bay

Jackie Balestra has again given us some great ideas for upcoming activities - the circus, self-defense classes for women, and hearing from Classic Tile.

We’re having some of the most gorgeous weather of the year so I’m not going to bore you with a long list of things to do this weekend - just get outside - and if you need some inspiration on where to go and what to do, check out my webpage, www.southbaybyjackie.com.

Now, I just need to mention a couple of things…..

The circus is coming to town! The circus is coming to town!

Circus Vargas returns to the City of Torrance and will set up the Big Top for two weeks beginning today, Thursday, November 3rd through Monday, November 14th at Del Amo Mall on Hawthorne Boulevard just south of Torrance Boulevard. Tickets start at $15 for children and $25 for adults.

Don’t forget, Triton Mixed Martial Arts Center offers a free women’s self-defense class every Monday morning at their training facility at Gold’s Gym on Harbor Drive. This very valuable service is available for women of every age and you don’t have to be a member of Gold’s or Triton to participate. Just check in at the front desk.

South Bay Halloween Events 2011

LA's South Bay has several exciting Halloween events coming up, as reported by our terrific area "Scooper," Jackie Balestra. Here is this weekend's report:

Halloween falls on Monday this year so the entire weekend will be devoted to hilarious Halloween hi-jinks.

Berry Bly Productions has been hosting a Halloween Costume Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hotel for several years, but this year they're moving it to the Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club just across Harbor Drive from the Crowne. The Haunted Hotel Halloween Costume Party is on Friday, October 28th and tickets are still available. If you didn’t get your fill on Friday night, Berry Bly is also hosting Scream at Club 705 on Saturday, October 29th.

If you’re looking for something a little edgier, Saint Rocke presents their annual Halloween rager, See You in Hell on Saturday, October 29th featuring bands Hoist the Colors, Neo Geo, Friends in Low Places, Allura and DJ Nocturn. Tickets are still available.

The World Famous Pumpkin Race Festival takes place at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, October 30th from 12:00 to 6:30. This event is a lot of fun and not just for the kiddies. No registration is necessary and you can buy a pumpkin racecar kit at Grow Produce in Manhattan Beach. Can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than putting together a pit crew and racing around in a pumpkin go-kart??? Sounds like fun, huh?

Saving the best for last, the Riviera Village Annual Trick or Treat happens on Monday, October 31st. Participating shops will be handing out various tricks and treats from 3:00 to 7:00 pm throughout Riviera Village. Adults have as much fun as the kids because everybody – and I mean everybody – is out and about. If you plan to attend and are thinking about having dinner at one of the many fabulous Village restaurants, you’ll want to make your reservations NOW. Seriously, right now.
