hughesville: An Open Letter to the Charles County Commissioners - 07/08/08 07:52 PM
In reference to the proposed rezoning request of 149+- acres known as the Jenkins Property, Public Hearing: Bill #2008-11 ZMA – Jenkins Property (Chaney), it is my opinion, the proposed rezoning will adversely influence living conditions and or property values at least within a 5 mile radius of the parcel; the proposed change will excessively increase traffic congestion or otherwise negatively affect public safety; the proposed change is speculative and does not have a valid and specific intent and purpose; there are substantial reasons why the property can be used in accordance with its existing zoning; there is convincing demonstration that

hughesville: Announcing the Inaugural Hughesville, MD 10k - 05/31/08 11:01 AM
We're planning for September 6, 2008, so save the date! I'm working on getting the course USTAF certified. Also being held are a 5k walk/run and a Kid's Fun Run. The 10k is a loop and the 5k is an out and back. The 5k will be held immediately following the start of the 10k. I mapped the course using MapMyRun and ran it using my Garmin Forerunner. The distance and time of year are perfect for training for the upcoming fall marathons. Registration, time and registration fees are to be determined. We plan on having food, drinks, music, pre-race stretching

hughesville: An Open Letter to the Charles County Planning Commission - 04/30/08 10:13 PM
I emphatically oppose the Chaney application for rezoning to Heavy Industrial from Agricultural Conservative and I implore our Planning Commission to deny the application. Every one of us in Hughesville continues to work hard for our investment. This is where we raise our kids, tend to our homes and produce our goods. It's so painfully obvious to me this location is inappropriate for a Heavy Industrial operation. I am most concerned with peripheral development around the Village of Hughesville. It's reasonable to surmise once one parcel goes Heavy Industrial, a precedent is set and other applications and approvals will soon follow.

hughesville: Charlotte Hall Safeway and Retail Center - 04/22/08 03:38 PM
The 17 acre development with Safeway as the anchor I blogged about a few months ago is about 4 months or so away from start of construction. It will be located in Charlotte Hall, MD between Golden Beach Road and the 7-11 and across the street from the McDonalds. Apparently, Tidewater Veterinary Hospital will be relocated about 600 yards away in a new state of the art building. Access to Tidewater Vet will move from Route 5 to Charlotte Hall Road or Golden Beach Road. I spoke to the developer this morning, Ray Mertz, about the project. Other tenants are expected to

hughesville: Signs of Progress? Are you sure you're seeing all New Construction in Hughesville? - 02/11/08 10:57 AM
Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR® Hughesville, MD Real Estate http://www.hughesvillehomes.com/ While on my long runs over the last couple of weeks or so, I've come across several "things" that have caught my eye. And as my mileage increases, I've run down new streets to get my time in. Some say I take my life in my own hands as I run down Route 231. However, I have notice cars and trucks give me plenty of room and I do stay well off away from traffic. Those of us that use it knows traffic has increased quite a bit over the years. Hughesville is the geographical center

Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR® Hughesville, MD Real Estate http://www.hughesvillehomes.com/ If you are considering planting a vineyard, or you have just recently done so, you will benefit from the information provided in this educational one-day workshop. This seminar is a good overview of what is involved with getting a commercial vineyard started in Maryland, and is part one of a two-part series. “There has been tremendous interest in the wine grape production throughout the Southern Maryland region. In fact, many growers have or are considering establishing vineyards”, said Ben Beale, of Maryland Cooperative Extension, the organization responsible for coordinating the workshop. “However, successfully establishing a

Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR® Hughesville, MD Real Estate http://www.hughesvillehomes.com/ Charles County planning officials agreed to postpone a public hearing on the proposed rezoning of 150 acres in Hughesville, MD when they learned that Chaney Enterprises Inc. did not have a traffic study or fiscal analysis done to support the proposal. The rescheduled meeting is February 11, 2008 at 7pm in the County Commissioner’s Meeting Room of the Charles County Government Building, La Plata, Maryland. hughesville: Commuter Rail to Hughesville and Beyond - 12/04/07 05:56 PM
Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR (r) Hughesville, MD Real Estate www.hughesvillehomes.com I've been following an interesting subject that affects the quality of life for residents of Hughesville and Southern Maryland. The subject is the addition of Commuter rail cars on existing CSX rail lines. This is an excellent opportunity to provide a valuable service to the residents of Hughesville and all of Southern Maryland. Maryland Senator Roy Dyson has been trying for years to get some traction on this issue and it appears we may have some. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer apparently contacted Governer Martin O'Malley and Transportation Secretary Porcari to urge them

Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR (r) Hughesville, MD Real Estate www.hughesvillehomes.com November saw several changes in the Hughesville market. Most notable was additional inventory through an increase of new construction. The newest subdivision is Ole Field Estate on Route 231 next to Old Field Chapel. It is a Marrick, Inc. community. Average Days on Market increased two days from 92 to 94. We've seen some fairly stable conditions in Hughesville recently. The number of homes for sale in Hughesville is 99, of those 38 are resale. There were six homes that went under contract in November and of those two were resale. Six homes went under contract in November and of

hughesville: The Star Spangled Banner Trail through Hughesville, MD - 11/25/07 12:03 PM
Craig W. Barrett, Hughesville, REALTOR (r) Hughesville, MD Real Estate www.hughesvillehomes.com The proposed Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail is the route used by the British and American soldiers during the 1814 Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812. The trail extends through parts of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. The sites along the proposed Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail would mark some of the most important events of the War of 1812, often referred to as America’s “second war for independence.” The trail, commemorating the only combined naval and land attack on the United States, begins with the June 1814 battles between the
