Hello ActiveRain Community,
As winter approaches, there are a few ways in which you can help protect both you and your house. Look below for helpful tips on winterizing your house.
-
Seal up the Exterior - Before the winter weather conditons hit, make sure you have sealed all cracks and spaces around doors and windows. You don't want to let the cold drafts enter through these places, when a little bit of caulking can so easily do the trick.
-
Keep Firewood Dry - One way to keep your place cozy is to have a nice, warm fire. But, you need to make sure that your firewood is dry and will easily burn. Make sure to store your firewood in a place where it will stay dry.
-
Replace/Repair Weatherstripping - Check for any drafts entering the house through windows and doors. If sealing the cracks with caulk does not do the trick, you should consider replacing the weatherstripping. This will seal up the exterior and keep out the cold drafts entering your house.
-
Check the Heating System - Before winter comes full on make sure to do some work on your heating system. This should include changing out malfunctioning and old thermostats, changing the filter in your furnace, clearing out debris from around your outdoor heat pump equipment, and cleaning your ducts among other things. This will ensue that your heating system is fresh and ready to handle the long winter.
-
Clean and Seal the Fireplace - Consider installing new doors on your fireplace to seal off cold drafts from entering through the chimney. In addition, now would be a good time to clean your chimney and prepare it for the long winter haul.
Hope this helps and make sure to use these tips to stay warm over the next few months!
