There has been a ton of talk about a lottery jackpot of a half billion dollars.  They said that the odds of winning are about one in 175 million.  To put that in perspective, think of a place that is about 175 miles away.   OK, from Indianapolis it is about 180 miles to Chicago.  That should be close enough for this illustration.

Imagine that all along the road during the 3+ hour drive, that there are pennies on their side.  There are approximately (not exactly) one million pennies in one mile.  One of those pennies has a hole drilled in it.  (Don't try this at home. This is for illustration purposes only.  I do not advocate damaging US money.)  As you drive along during your 3 hour drive, just pick one penny.  If you pick the penny with the hole in it, that would approximate the odds of winning the lottery.  Want to increase your odds?  Buy a dozen tickets.  Now you get to pick twelve pennies with the hopes of picking the one with the hole in it.

You might want to have a Plan B in case you don't win the jackpot.  Have a wonderful weekend.

If you spend $12 per week to pay down the balance on your mortgage, you can probably cut a few years off your payment, depending on the size of the mortgage and the interest rate.  That is a sure winner.

Is the real estate market awakening from its extended slumber?
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
The news is a source of information that is frequently mis-interpreted. But in conversations with a few real estate agents around Indiana, it seems like everybody is busier. Showings are up. More offers are being made and accepted. And I even heard…
One strategy for the banks to reduce REO inventory
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
We have all heard much discussion about the large inventory of bank-owned homes, including the shadow inventory. From the time that a borrower goes delinquent, quite a bit of time can pass before there is an actual sheriff sale. At the sheriff sale,…
Are renters vulnerable to inflation?
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
Let me start by saying that I am not an economist (and I don't play one on tv. - Why does everybody like to add that phrase? ) And it just might be an advantage - not being an economist. But on to the discussion. Years ago, I had a book that showed…
Ion Web Services announces shutdown
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
I received an e-mail from Ion Web Services that announced a shutdown of services in 30 days. In this day and age, you never know whether or not an e-mail is a legitimate message or whether somebody was hacked. So I did send them a message and they…
Check imaging - If your bank doesn't have it, change banks
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
You don't have to be too ancient to remember the days when your checks would be returned with your statement. Then at some point banks switched over to check imaging. To some traditionalists, that didn't sit too well. The banks said that if you need…
Last Call for Photos with Green Leaves
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
To the eye of the beholder, the photo with green leaves looks natural. Beautiful fall colors call attention to the leaves and autumn, and detract from the actual subject of the photo. And of course no leaves means winter - and phot os including…

Easy does it on the Qualified Residential Mortgage
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
Sudden changes and shocks to the system can be dangerous. We have all seen the over-reaction to the lending practices of five years ago. Reasonably well qualified buyers are getting the scrutiny that the unqualified buyers should have gotten five…
It is the best of times, it is the worst of times
Dan Rosenberger (Harvest Realty)
Confusion runs rampant. What is happening with foreclosures? What is the trend in home prices? How about overall inflation? What about the debt crisis? And is the NFL going to play this season? From reading the headlines, there are definitely…
