Incredibly moving Photography by James Mollison - Where Children Sleep
As an Atlanta Real Estate photographer and real estate agent in Marietta most of my posts have something to do with real estate photography or real estate in general.  Every now and then, however, I stumble on something that catches my eye and I just have to share.  I guess in a way this is remotely related to real estate photography because it involves photos of the places where children sleep from all over the world.  Having photographed literally 100s of childrens bedrooms over the last few years, this stopped me in my tracks.  It … (2 comments)

photography: Atlanta Real Estate Photography - 2011 Marietta GA Art and Design Showhouse - 06/14/11 08:04 AM
Marietta, GA Art & Design Showhouse 2011 Atlanta Real Estate Photography by Iran Watson As an Atlanta Real Estate photographer and real estate agent in Marietta I often get opportunities to photograph some of Metro Atlanta and Cobb County's most interesting and beautiful properties. Recently I was asked to photograph a few rooms of the 2011 Art & Design Showhouse in Marietta, GA for one of my favorite local city sites Marietta.com. For those not familiar with the Marietta Art & Design Showhouse, it is essentially a showcase of 21 of Atlanta's most accomplished interior designers designing a space around popular … (7 comments)

photography: What I wouldn't give for another Kodak Moment like this... - 12/02/10 05:13 PM

I would like to start by saying "Thank You" to ActiveRain and Kodak for sponsoring this contest.  So often do we get caught up in our hectic daily schedules that we sometimes forget about those special moments that we were lucky enough to capture throughout the years.  My gratitude is not for the points, or the comments, or even the prizes should I be chosen a winner.  No, this contest did what I find so hard to do in my 'busy' life and that's taking the time to stop and count my blessings.  By going back and revisiting at all the … (17 comments)

As a Marietta, GA real estate agent specializing in Atlanta real estate photography, I had to learn quite a few lessons on my way to competence.  Even though I was a decent Atlanta photographer, or so I thought, it didn't take long to realize that taking pictures of homes came with its own set of unique challenges.  This blog series is written with the amateur photographer in mind.  Whether you are a real estate agent, home stager, seller or just interested in taking better pictures of homes, this blog series is for you.

Marietta, GA (Cobb County) Real Estate Listing - 579 Berkeley Ln Kennesaw, GA 30144
We've just listed another awesome property in Kennesaw, GA.  It's a nice sized Ranch Style home at 2122 SF, but the Finished Basement  adds another 500+ SF.  This is no ordinary basement either...  if you like entertaining than this is the place for you.
All of the basic living is on the main level, including a Master on Main and two more secondary bedrooms and a full bath.  Another great feature of the home is the Back Deck and Private Back Yard that adjoins a Screened-In Deck.  This space is … (9 comments)

Happy 4th of July! - How to Photograph Fireworks
I just got back from visiting some family in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, TN.  Of course our Independence Day celebration had to include a firework show and of course I had to bring my camera along to capture some of the action.
Taking pictures of fireworks would appear to be pretty simple at first glance but it doesn't always turn out that way.  Very low light conditions, sporadic bursts of bright light and a subject that the camera can only focus on for a brief moment can fool a cameras auto-setting into … (7 comments)

Listing Photo Favorites - Homes for Sale in Marietta, GA 30066

We just listed a beautiful 4 Bed/ 3.5 Bath, 2 Story Home in Cobb County.
This was a fun property to shoot.  The finished basement in this home is one of the best build-outs I've seen at this price point.  The theater room in particular ended up being one of my favorites.  Tried a few new techniques like shooting my brackets with the tungsten lights off and I found that it works quite well for rendering a base image you can go back and layer in post.  There … (6 comments)

Electrifying Night in Kennesaw, GA - How to Photograph Lightning

One of the benefits of lugging my camera gear around with me most places I go is when an photo opportunity presents itself, I'm ready to capture it.  On June 22, 2010 a pretty nasty (albeit spectacular) lightning storm rolled through Kennesaw, GA.  The storm at one point was directly over our office building and while I do not recommend going outside and taking pictures under these circumstances, I couldn't resist.  Capturing pictures of lightning like this has a lot to do with luck.  Typically the show lasts for a fraction of … (4 comments)

photography: Sandestin Resort Miramar Beach, FL - 06/19/10 08:34 PM
Sandestin Resort is one of our favorite places to vacation.  We just got back a couple weeks ago and I'm happy to report the beaches were just as white and beautiful as ever.  The crowds of people we normally see, however, were not present and I'm afraid news of the oil spill may be to blame.  Sandestin has a lot to offer in addition to the beach thankfully and I brought my camera along to get a few shots of my favorite spots.
We need to continue to support these businesses through these tough times.

photography: Tips to Improve Your Listing Photos, Part 1 - 06/17/10 06:48 PM
It has been awhile since I've blogged here so I thought I would ease back into it.  Over the next few months I will be posting a 10 part series (that's right, 10!) on how to improve your listing photos.  My goal as an Atlanta Real Estate Photographer is to give amateur photographers some practical ideas that will not only make taking listing photos less of a chore but improve the final result as well.
As a Marietta, GA Real Estate Agent that does his own real estate photography, I had to learn quite a few lessons on my way to competence.  Even though I was … (29 comments)

photography: "Painting" with Light, Exterior Shots with Impact - 12/31/07 04:35 PM
This shot was inspired by Carson Coots blog http://activerain.com/blogsview/105809/My-Real-Estate-Photo and Propertysnaps82's dusk shots over at the Flickr PFRE group.  This was my first shot at "painting with light" and I have to say, it was a blast! The idea is basically to use a long exposure (6-10 secs) and then use 500w Halogen work-lights to "paint" the light onto the subject.  In this photo I used two 500w work-lights to light the tree, the front of the home and the foreground as the shutter was open.  The lights inside the home all came from the existing fixtures with the exception of the two rooms, second … (34 comments)

photography: What do You Spend to Market a Listing? - 11/25/07 03:16 PM
A past client of mine and I were having a conversation the other day on discount brokers and why he thinks that RE agents, in general, are "grossly overpaid".  He, like many others I suspect, placed a stigma on agents that they were basically glorified door openers or even worse, used car salesmen.  He seemed to like the idea of the discount brokers in that you essentially only pay for what he felt, initially, was the most important servicea Realtor provides; access to the MLS.  Now having sold 2 homes for him (and making 2% on the listing side and consequently much more … (14 comments)

photography: Photo-Stitched Panoramas - The Poor Man's Wide-Angle - 11/02/07 02:26 AM
As an Atlanta Real Estate Photographer, one of my favorite (and useful) techniques in real estate photography is photo-stitching.  The great thing about it is almost anyone can utilize this as it does not require any special features on a camera to use.  Using the free software sold with most modern digital cameras, taking multiple pictures and stitching them into one panoramic image is simple, if not automatic.
Here are the six separate shots I took out of our hotel room in Fortaleza, Brazil on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago.  These shots are hand-held as I didn't bring the tripod.  I … (10 comments)
