Grateful for God's Gift

I love this time of year! I love the cooking, baking, getting together with family and friends, excitement of Christmas getting closer, looking forward to snow and so much more. This year has been a fantastic year and there is so much to be grateful for.

I thought about making a list of everything I'm thankful for but I think it would go on and on and on! So, then I thought, "If I had to name only one thing that I am grateful for, what would it be?"

The answer to that question took about 2 seconds for me to consider. I am thankful that God is in control of everything, both good and bad, that happens in my life and around me. Even when things do not seem to be going as I think they should, it is still in God's loving hands. He knows the beginning and the end and nothing is a surprise to Him.

That knowledge is what takes the worry away when I get concerned and makes the pain lessen when things hurt. I am grateful for the things He teaches through all of life's circumstances. I am grateful for the love He shows me every single day in the people and things He places around me. I am grateful that I can talk to Him at any second and turn my concerns over to Him. I am grateful that God is concerned about insignificant me.

OK, so maybe I failed at keeping my list to one thing. I guess the bottom line is I am grateful for almighty God and His grace, who loved me enough to send His son, Jesus Christ as redemption for my sin.

An Early Christmas Present

Since both my daughter Jess and I enjoy cooking and baking, one of our favorite stores is The Chef's Outlet located at the Lighthouse Place in Michigan City, Indiana.

Last Saturday was a beautiful day in Valparaiso, Indiana and we decided to take a drive to the Lighthouse Place Outlet Mall. Boy, are we ever glad we did! We found one of the best buys ever! One of our stops is always the Chef's Outlet. Every time we go in there Jess goes right over to their selection of knives. She has dreamed of owning her own set of Henckels knives forever but they are a bit out of our price range.

While I am looking around the store, I happen to overhear one of the sales persons tell another customer that they have a couple of sets of Henckels Knives on sale. Of course, my ears perked up. I cannot believe the price he just quoted! It's about 1/5 of what they normally sell for. So, of course, I grab Jess and tell her, "you've got to come over and look at these sets." They are kind of toward the back and not priced in any way.

I look around for a salesperson and check on the price. Sure enough, he explains that Henckels has just introduced a new line of knives so these were sent to them as clearance items. You have to understand that the sets were not the bottom of the line knives, but professional level knives. I could just see Jess drooling over her dream knives.

So, I glanced over at my dear husband and he knew what I was thinking and just nodded his OK. We grabbed a set and bought Jess her very early Christmas present. I can't remember the last time I saw her so excited.

Some of you may not understand the excitement over kitchen knives but if you are a cook, I'm sure you do. If you are in the market for knives, head over the the Chef's Outlet at the Lighthouse Place Outlet Mall in Michigan City and hopefully they still have a set left for you.

Our next FC Tucker/1st Team Real Estate office meeting is coming up and we're having it at one of my favorite hang-out places in Valparaiso, Indiana, Evelyn Bay Coffee Company! How good is that!

It's a bit funny that I enjoy going to Evelyn Bay Coffee Company so much since I am not a coffee drinker. I guess that just says even more about their great atmosphere, food, customer service. and wireless internet! By the way, they also have an assortment of teas. The combination of all that makes it an ideal place to sit back, get some work done, and enjoy a cup a hot tea or coffee. Did I tell you that they have a separate room that you can reserve for special occasions such as parties or office meetings?

You're probably wondering why I even tried them in the first place since I don't drink coffee. Well, my daughter Jess, is an avid coffee drinker. She loves a good, fresh cup of coffee several times a day. On most Sunday mornings, we meet up at Evelyn Bay before church to sit, talk, and catch up on things. She drinks her coffee and I enjoy a yummy scone.

Hey everyone on Active Rain, I'm trying to help out my husband. He is a pilot who does quite a lot of traveling across the United States and abroad. While out on the road, he has the fun unfortunate task of trying out new places to eat.

Don't you just feel sorry for him? I don't but don't tell him that. Uh, oh...he reads my blog. I think I'm in trouble now!

So, if he happened to be flying into your hometown, where would you recommend that he eat? What is your favorite place to go? Tell us about those mom and pop places that aren't the usual tourist traps.

I'd like to get a long list of restaurants for him to try in the US, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and wherever. Hey, you never know, I may just be able to tag along on some of his trips! So give us your ideas and recommendations. Can you make my mouth water?

It's tea season, and there's nothing quite like a cup of chamomile at bedtime. Whole flower, loose chamomile, that is. The grocery store only has tea bags, so where can I find whole, loose tea?

Duh! They've got that at Molly Bea's!

Tonight is leftover night at my house. Being that it's gotten cold, most of our leftovers are soup. I like making something fresh to go with leftovers, so I was thinking bread...no, biscuits. Yum! And, seeing as how I'm a total nut about whole grains, I want to try out a new recipe for whole-grain biscuits using old-fashioned oatmeal and whole wheat pastry flour.

Hmm...whole wheat pastry flour...

Oh yeah! They've got that at Molly Bea's!

My friend had a problem. At least, he thought it was a problem. It went something like this:

"I have to cater a banquet with a Japanese menu for this class I'm taking. I've got this recipe for these amazing gooey dough balls with a red bean paste in the center...but...where the heck around here am I going to find adzuki beans?"

To which I promptly responded:

"Oh! They've got those at Molly Bea's!"

Have you caught on to the theme yet? Molly Bea's Ingredients in Chesterton (right across from Jewel on Indian Boundary Rd) is a foodie's (meaning "my") dream come true. Bin after bin of specialty flours, whole grains, beans, loose teas, fresh-roasted coffee, spices, nuts, dried fruit, herbs, and candy...all available in bulk, by the pound, in bags that you pack for yourself. It's the place to go if you're looking for that hard-to-find ingredient, or if, like my dad, you like to create your own trail mix to keep in a jar on your desk. They even have a station where you can grind your very own peanut butter. And, if you're looking for that perfect gift, they've got kitchen gadgets, cookbooks, fun chocolate bars, gourmet sauces, honeys, syrups, and on and on and on. I pretty much go crazy every time I'm in there. As they put it, "Whether you are a cooker, a baker, or eater...there's something here for you."

Just be warned: Don't go to Molly Bea's when you're hungry*!

*Not that there's ever an excuse to go to Molly Bea's hungry when Third Coast Spice Cafe is just a few doors down...But that's for another blog. (*suspenseful music here*)

LAF it UP! What does that mean? LAF stands for "Ladies at Faith" and it is part of our Women's Ministry at Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Four years ago we moved to Valparaiso, Indiana and had to wait 3 days for the truck with our furniture and all our belongings to arrive. Since we lived in a hotel during that period, that meant going out to eat for meals. One of the places we tried was The Dish Restaurant in Valparaiso, Indiana and it's been one of our favorites ever since.

The entrees at The Dish Restaurantare excellent. Among the choices are: Smoked Chili-Citrus Marinated Duck Breast, Grilled Lamb Loin Chops, Grilled Kobe Flat Iron Steaak, and so much more. There are also a variety of salads and desserts. Everything I have tried there has been mouth-watering good!

One of the best deals offered at The Dish is their box lunches which are available either to go or to eat in. The box lunches include an entree, soup, salad, and dessert! A complete meal for only $8.50.

The Dish Restaurant is located at 3907 Calumet Ave in Valparaiso, Indiana. They are closed on Sundays but that leaves you 6 days out of the week to give them a try. For a better look at the amazing menu, just go to their website at www.dishrestaurant.net.

Meals on Wheels in Porter County supplies meals to elderly, ill, and disabled people throughout Porter County. For many, this is one way of helping maintain independent living. The program succeeds partly due to the people who volunteer to deliver the meals. Almost Time for Christmas Decorations

It's November and that means time to start thinking about the holidays. First, there's Thanksgiving .... turkey, dressing, green bean casserole, and so many desserts. Then of course comes Christmas with the lovely lights on the houses, Christmas trees to decorate, presents to buy. Do you believe it? It's almost time for Christmas decorations!

I, for one, have always wanted to put lots and lots of lights decorating the outside of my home. Some years, I have managed some but never as many as I would like. One of these years, I will and then I'll post my wonderful pictures. Until then, I may go with the idea of the picture below:

My Clients' First Home

Recently my family and I were invited to dinner at my clients' new home. It was such a rewarding experience with lots of good food and great company.

After months of looking at many, many homes, we finally got to closing on their first home. The long hours of showings were delightful. With their son to entertain us and my daughter, Jess, who is a kid magnet, there was never a dull moment.

We had wonderful, authentic Greek food for dinner and fun family stories throughout the evening. They have settled into their new home and are enjoying the pride of ownership. The hours flew by at the dining room table, laughing and having a wonderful time. I look forward to developing many more relationships like this.

Time Change This Sunday, 11-1-09!

Just a reminder to everyone that it's that time of the year again, time change this Sunday, November 1, 2009. Put those clocks back an hour and get your extra hour of sleepy time.

So why am I reminding everyone? Because I'm the one that usually forgets. In fact, I had not even thought about it until about 2 minutes ago when my husband (Mark) reminded me. He is a pilot and is meticulous about setting his watch to the precise second and knowing what the weather may bring the next day. Those traits are part of the reason that he is such an amazing pilot. You definitely would not want to fly in an airplane with me in the cockpit. I'd probably get you to your destination late after flying right through the center of a thunderstorm!

Nope, piloting is not for me. I'd rather sit back and be flown to my destination. Real estate, on other hand, I enjoy and Mark would probably be very bored by it. Funny, how unique people are with different gifts.

Oh, this post is supposed to be about the time change. OK, you've been reminded - Time change this Sunday, November 11, 2009, fall back! Yes, even in Indiana, where part of the state is in Central Time and the other part is in Eastern Time.

Really, I'm not usually this scatter-brained!

Living Green Expo 2009

The Porter County Builders Association sponsored the 1st Living Green Expo last year in Valparaiso, Indiana. It was such a great success that they are doing it again at an even larger location with more booths, seminars, and 2 national speakers! The 2009 Living Green Expo will be held at the Valparaiso Ivy Tech campus on November 7 and 8.

This is for anyone interested in learning more about "Living Green": homeowners, realtors, future homeowners, kids....anyone! Last year there was lots of information on the latest "green" products including siding, wood flooring, roofing, energy efficient homes, cabinets, counters, and so much more. Women's Center of Northwest Indiana

The Women's Center of Northwest Indiana could use the help of women interested in making a difference in the life of a mother and her unborn baby. Volunteers are needed for the offices in Crown Point, Highland, Valparaiso, and DeMotte.

Nurses are needed at the Crown Point office to do pregnancy tests
Certified ultrasound technician or a RN willing to be trained is needed for the ultrasound ministry
Counselors and help-line workders needed at all locations to listen to clients, explain the risks of abortion, and present Biblical answers.

Now if you just want a snack to go with your coffee, then a chocolate chip scone is highly recommended by me, of course. Their bagels are very tasty, too, especially the multi-grain bagel!

Obviously, I enjoy this place. The atmosphere at Evelyn Bay Coffee Company in Valparaiso, Indiana is warm and inviting. They also offer a conference room that can be rented for meetings. Evelyn Bay is conveniently located at 3800 Calumet at the entrance to the North Hampstead Community built by Coolman Homes on Valparaiso's northside.

Don't miss the Annual Valparaiso Pie Baking Contest!

How does a slice of fresh pie made from local ingredients sound to you? What if I told you that the proceeds from that delicious slice of pie goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Porter County Indiana? Would you have a slice or maybe two?

Well, tomorrow, Friday, October 23, 2009, is your chance to do just that! Old World Market located at 76 S Washington in Valparaiso, Indiana is hosting The Annual Valparaiso Pie Baking Contest. The challenge is open to both amateur and professional bakers from around the area and will feature seasonal pies made from local ingredients. Judging begins at 4:00.

After the judging takes place, all the pies will be sold by the slice at Blackbird Cafe, 114 E Lincolnway, Valparaiso, Indiana. How about stopping by on your way home from work and picking up a slice to have before dinner? I think dessert before dinner is the best way to go!

Don't forget that by satisfying that sweet tooth at the Annual Valparaiso Pie Baking Contest you are also helping the Boys and Girls Club of Porter County.

Wonderful Wednesday - Hump-Day!

One of my favorites groups on Active Rain is Wordless Wednesday. I look forward to those wonderful pictures each week. But for me, Wednesday is also my favorite day of the week, the day I look forward to. Wonderful Wednesday is how I tend to think of my hump day each week and here's why.

On Wednesday mornings, my day starts with a Precept Upon Precept Bible study on the book of Hebrews. It has been such an exciting study. After a week of homework, I look forward to getting together with the other women in the group and find out what God taught them that week. Lively discussions are inevitable at each class. The Precepts Bible Study is held at Liberty Bible Church in Chesterton, Indiana

As if that wasn't enough for a great day already, the day ends with a study on 2nd Timothy at our mid-week church bible study. Dave Tipton, who leads this study, gets so excited that his enthusiasm is just contagious. We have already had to move to a larger classroom once and we are overflowing again. That is a good problem to have. Awanas goes on during the same time, so bring your kids along for a fun-filled program. All this takes place at Faith Evangelical Bible Church, 305 E 400 N, in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Both bible studies are open to all. The morning one is a women's bible study but the evening study is for both men and women. Please come, we'd love to have you. I'd enjoy sharing my Wonderful Wednesday with you!

Sweet Adelines International

Do you enjoy listening to the old style barbershop harmonies of days long gone? If you do or if you've never even had the chance to know whether or not you'd enjoy it, have I got something for you! The answer is Sweet Adelines International.

Sweet Adelines International has choruses in cities all around the world dedicated to keeping barbershop harmony alive. In fact, their annual convention and International Competition is taking place this week in Nashville, Tennessee, October 20-24, 2009.

The entire competition is available online and you can watch all the excitement through their webcast. If you watch the competition, I have to ask you to cheer extra loud for one chorus in particular, the Gem City Chorus from Dayton, Ohio because my mother-in-law has been a part of that chorus for over 25 years! If you see her, please tell her that I said that Gem City is the best!

If you live in Northwest Indiana and are interested in barbershop, there are 3 choruses just in the Michigan Lake area of Indiana. First, in Valparaiso, Indiana we have the Great Lake Sound Chapter that meets at Faith Memorial Lutheran Church, 753 N. Calumet Ave. There are also two additional choruses in South Bend and Hammond, Indiana.
