Exciting news for Northwest Indiana!

New economic development district has been formed to give direction to the regions goals and assist in helping apply for federal funds with new comprehensive strategy. The newly-renamed Northwest Indiana Economic Development District approved a draft of those goals and objectives and made them part of the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

The District is a nonprofit economic development district formed late last year by the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission and the private Northwest Indiana Forum to help channel stimulus money to Northwest Indiana. After all, nationwide there was $779.9 million disbursed last year, of which Indiana as a whole received $5 million.

There are eight goals and several objectives which they have outlined for the region:

1. Maximize technology, productivity and efficiency of existing core industries

2. Create diverse, emerging and sustainable industries

3. Strengthen public/private partnerships resulting in increased regional investment

4. Redevelop urban core areas

5. Utilization of transportation and other infrastructure advantages

6. Promote growth that protects and enhances the environmental assets of Northwest Indiana

7. Develop a work force that is motivated and flexible, earning sustainable or higher wages and actively engaged in skill advancement and lifelong learning

8. Recreate a region desirable for business to locate and people to live and work.

Of course this shows the high quality of life available in Northwest Indiana and the drive for further development to accommodate the level of people relocating to the area.
