asheville green learning tours: What's On YOUR Lucky Green Roof? Part 2. An Irish Lad in Boston's Southie. - 03/17/10 08:01 AM
In Part 1 of this series, we admitted that after visiting Asheville NC's LEED Certified Blue Ridge Parkway Center and the Green Roof we became Roof Nuts, intrigued with the concept and possibilities today's roofs offer . Features such as roof color, stormwater runoff systems, skylights improve sustainability and quality of life. But the most fascinating of all for us is The "Lucky" Green Roof. According to Wikipedia, "A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as (7 comments)
asheville green learning tours: HOME SWEET GREEN HOME HOLIDAYS - 12/24/09 07:53 AM
HOME SWEET GREEN HOME HOLIDAYS There's no place like home, especially during the holidays. And best of all you can save time, energy, and money by "traveling" your own neighborhood. Think of it this way... everything you need is right at home. And you and your family can pretend you're a tourist visiting your own town. Here in Asheville the Biltmore Estate is one place we plan on visiting. Did you know that .if each family reduced holiday gasoline consumption by one gallon (about twenty miles), we'd reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons? Here's a list of neighborly going (1 comments)

asheville green learning tours: GREEN Living Tip Asheville: Low Maintenance Landscape - 12/06/09 03:18 PM
the green real estate Asheville: GOING GREEN By shifting to a sustainable and low-maintenance approach in landscape design, trading out plants that demand a lot of attention and substituting plants that seem to do well on their own, many of us around Asheville, NC have found more time to be "neighborly" . Many of us are way less exhausted on the weekend when we get together. The lawns are smaller, but the landscaping is mighty attractive with ground covers and shrubs, and mulch praising our efforts for sustainable landscape design, and some of this even is edible. asheville green learning tours: Neighborhood Infusions -One Sunday in Asheville - 11/22/09 08:31 AM
Neighborhood Infusions These are my favorite neighborhoods, the out-of-the way bitsguarded by ancient oaks, and here and there, distinguished witha friendly fence someone recently painted-not white, but with an infusion of color: lavenderto grace the red-to-orange geraniumsin terra-cotta potsthat hang out on the other side. I like the histories: The foot trail wideand so well-wornthat runs along a streamand leads back, in human-time, to seventeen and ninety-fourto a Cherokeewho walked this way, like me,but then it was a narrow trading path. And if I turn my head just-so as I meander,a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak or a Scarlet Tanager, or aYellow-billed Cuckoo, or aRuby-throated (6 comments)

Not long ago, Tom Rioux came to talk with us about PAINT. No ordinary paint, mind you. This is elegant paint and no wonder. Tom is an elegant person. I am not saying this because he dresses in Armani , which he does not. I am saying this because he is a class act. And I am saying he is a class act because Tom shows impressive and stylish excellence as he walks his talk. I have the impression other people are a lot healthier because he has invested his time and energy for that purpose. Yes! You can have great paint (5 comments)
