eco communities: WHAT Did You Say a "CSA" Is?? And WHAT is "S L O W Food" ?? - 12/31/08 09:47 AM
We are GREEN Buyers' Brokers. We expect to respond to interesting eco-friendly questions. For example, just last weeka "greenie" couple who are looking to establish a conservation development here in the Asheville area, or become a part of an already established eco community asked, "
"WHAT is a CSA??"
We explained that according to Local Harvest, a CSA  (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the those of us who do not spend our lives on the land farming to create a relationship with a farm , even if we so choose, to receive a weekly basket of produce.
"Great idea! … (3 comments)

eco communities: Asheville NC Relocation `Asheville's Eco Communities (series) : Hickory Nut Forest - 12/30/08 08:15 AM
Asheville's Eco Communities: Hickory Nut Forest. Now, I said that there are a number of very worthy eco-communities in and around Asheville. So you may wonder why I'm taking you to Hickory Nut Forestfirst...Here are 7 red-hot and GREEN  reasons:
•1.       Hickory Nut Forest Eco-developers protect the land. Covenants on the lots ensure that homes will blend naturally into the forest. The most special places are for all to enjoy: the cascading streams, tumbling waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and distant vistas.
•2.       Nature Connections. With over six miles of hiking trails, people can enjoy the adjoining 800 acres in Little Bearwallow Mountain Preserve and Florence … (1 comments)

eco communities: "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP" Sounds of Mountaintop Dumping Into Stream - 12/04/08 11:41 AM
I got an email from Project Nature Connect's   young Adam Burk this morning. He was talking about mountaintop removal and that reminded me of steep slope development in our area. (see photo)

"The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] on Tuesday approved a last-minute rule change by the Bush administration that will allow coal companies to bury streams under the rocks leftover from mining." (full article here) he said.
Immediately a red flag went up: " Buyers, sellers, and  real estate professionals here in the Asheville area mountains, this can impact property values.

A long time observer of the effects … (4 comments)

eco communities: The Power of Just One - 09/01/08 09:35 AM
I am thinking of Grandma today on what would have been her birthday.  Over a hundred years ago, having just graduated from Ypsilanti (Michigan) Teacher's College, my adventurous grandmother took an assignment in a one-room schoolhouse off the coast of Cuba. Sailing from Florida, she traveled by freighter, finally to arrive at her destination,  the Isles of Pines  .
There she joined a group of fellow Americans to lend her services to what today might be understood as an eco-community or eco-village. Ecovillages, according to Wikipedia are " intended to be socially, economically and ecologically sustainable intentional communities. Most aim for a … (13 comments)

eco communities: RA, RA- THE Original Solar-Powered Delight, Remodeled -Part I - 08/30/08 01:23 PM

It  seems to me (and how about you?) that there's a "solar-tie" between all of us-- no matter where we stand in the annals of history.
EXAMPLE: Our on-going relationship with the sun in terms of  light, warmth, and growth.
I've noticed that here, in 2008, we human beings seem to have developed a keen interest  in the advantages of becoming sun-partners in terms of energy efficiency.

Photo I took at Hickory Nut Forest Eco-Community. Experts look for SUN...
NOTE: This eco-community is aiming for a net sero energy goal!

As the sun rose this morning, I … (11 comments)

The Amazing (though small) MARS HILL Tailgate Market.

It's a mild August Saturday morning, and I'm  on my way to the Madison County Tailgate and Artisans Market in Mars Hill, NC .
You may not be able to tell from this photo, but it is right on the campus of Mars Hill College!
This college is a bit of history in and of itself! . It is a liberal arts college founded WAY back in 1856.(For more on the college and Mars Hill,  see my college and small towns around Asheville series.)
Summer's here, the mountainsides are blooming and … (13 comments)

eco communities: Picnics and Day Trips: Trip # 4 of the Asheville Series- Hickory Nut Forest - 08/11/08 01:33 PM
There are rumbles in the countryside. Becky and Bruce are praying this means rain, but it's been a dry, dry summer thus far, and rumbles or not, the sun is hot and so are we.
Luckily, we know where the enormous old shade trees and cooling waters of Hickory Nut Creek (see photo)can be found. So, today we headed out for a picnic. In our basket was the usual lettuce and tomato to combine with home-baked bread(see the series on Asheville's tailgate markets) for sure-but something was missing!

WHERE is the perfect place to construct the green-built home of your dreams? Possibly on a remarkable building site  in one of Asheville, North Carolina's  eco-communities. "GREEN" is the word here in Western North Carolina's mountains.
More and more here in Asheville we are noticing a trend toward sustainable environments, and more and  more. Asheville is becoming the "hub' of green and sustainable development.

Quality of Life. "Green" Communities. Sustainable Innovation in Homes and ECO-Friendly Living. THIS Asheville area picnic (one of a series of picnics planned with all of us in mind) includes all of the above.
It's an Appalachian wonder, all right, where  you can just hang out, toss your picnic basket on a rustic table beside the mighty French Broad River (see photo) and really get into a slower pace.
Bring along some homemade peach cobbler, and just "BE" for an afternoon...or longer.
Today I'm taking you with me to a place where the French Broad River runs boldly and small towns … (12 comments)

eco communities: Strong, Caring (and Green) Communities - 07/08/08 08:27 AM
I'm out on the Land today. I'm out on the Land in an Asheville area eco-development we represent. It has open spaces and forest land and waterfalls and climbing cliffs and streams and an heirloom apple orcahrd now producing juicy specimens you'd love to eat...(see photo) oh it is amazing!
So here I am, out on the Land, feeling very privileged indeed... and thinking.
I'm thinking about a notable quote a real state client/friend here in Asheville sent for my review this morning:
