eco design and development: Teachers Across the USA Pass a GREEN Resolution - 01/14/09 12:17 PM
A Big eco-friendly "Thumbs Up" to teachers across the USA who helped pass a "GREEN" resolution: "WHEREAS, green and sustainable schools are new or renovated schools that create a healthy environment that is conducive to learning while saving energy resources and money. " Sustainable living encompasses a lifestyle change... "green-built" schools * focus on improvements in site selection, daylighting, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, acoustics and classroom design - all of which have an important impact on a child's ability to learn and a teacher's ability to teach ..." Teachers are SMART! So that is why I am wondering is how many teachers (3 comments)
eco design and development: " ...the next big thing in small [GREEN & Eco-Friendly] living..." - 12/30/08 12:33 PM
Early this week, Charlie Arthur, CCIM out in Port Townsend, WA, a member at the Eco-All-Stars Group clued us all in to " ...the next big thing in small [GREEN & Eco-Friendly] living..." He revealed that this "next big thing" comes from IdeaBox, a company out of Salem, Oregon. It seems that IdeaBox offers "a lifestyle prefab housing solution." As a land specialist, I can see some good potential for my conservation real estate buyers who may wish to have green, incredibly energy efficient temporary quarters as they build their family compound on the land they are preserving here in the mountains outside (2 comments)
eco design and development: 2009: A "Simpler Version" ? - 12/23/08 05:13 PM
Systems theorists construct models of complex real-world systems. And I am a real estate professional in the real world. But, systems theorists are mathematical. You and I might lean toward more pedestrian analogies and metaphors to help to explain the basic structure of optimal methodsfor getting from point "A" to point "B". The object of getting to a certain spot, of course, either is to maintain stability or to drive toward a desired goal. ... such as a happy eco-friendly Closing Event... I like the that goal. But I want to know more about these "optimal methods"... Possibly a closer look into this (8 comments)
"The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] on Tuesday approved a last-minute rule change by the Bush administration that will allow coal companies to bury streams under the rocks leftover from mining." (full article here) he said. Immediately a red flag went up: " Buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals here in the Asheville area mountains, this can impact property values.

eco design and development: One of the Most Amazing Green-Built homes Asheville and We Have EVER Seen - 11/11/08 08:11 PM
It's NOT my listing. It's NOT anyone's listing. It is however one of the most amazing green-built homes Asheville and we have ever seen. (see photo) And I had the opportunity earlier this week to spend an hour with the genius who not only designed, but built it. Here's how it happened: We were lost on our way to preview a home in Asheville, NCand stopped to ask directions from a friendly neighbor... . He turned out to be The Man-He who not only discovered a totally awesome, south-facing mountain property, but recognized it as his opportunity to design a contemporary (5 comments)
On our annual Fall Leaves photo shoot we strolled into mature hard woods at Three Creeks Preserve. (This is a local eco community within about 40 minutes of Asheville and only 10 minutes from Lake Lure, NC.) Following the colors, we traversed a foot bridge then connected with a trail that winds from the eco community at Three Creeks out into almost 300 acres of diverse terrain. What a canvas! As we continued on we climbed to the panorama of red, gold and purple and the mountain overlook. (Photo of Autumn in the Greater Asheville, NC Area. It is So (2 comments)

eco design and development: Green Communities, Future Green Building Trends .Asheville and Beyond - 08/15/08 02:20 PM
Recently I bumped into such an interesting discussion on green building trends on the tube. If you are interested in trends in our industry in terms of sustainable design, here's a bit of information that seems pertinent . As I sat glued to the screen, I thought of my pals at AR, real estate professionals and our clients, especially those looking to the future. So, I took notes. The discussion took place right here in North Carolina where sustainable innovation is spurring the imagination in the real estate industry these days. In fact, WNC Healthy Built Homes® (see photo I took not too long ago)are (6 comments)

So...we have touched on Green ECO Communities, and the process of Land Planning and Design. The initial steps in land planning are so important. Equinox Environmental, is one of a few Greater Asheville Area Firms whose core services can provide land planning for our real estate clients. The path to land planning is exciting. ( I took this photo at an eco community about 25 minutes from downtown Asheville. Hiclory Nut Forest.) Oftentimes, our clients use land planning services during the due diligence period and prior to building. . Then the land-savvy professionals may have due diligence deadlines to deal with, but we have (7 comments)

eco design and development: Consumer Demand: Climbing the Stairs to Quality, Longevity & Healthy Living Spaces in Asheville - 06/16/08 09:53 PM
Here is the fourth post in a series that looks at sustainability and the undeniable trend toward consumer demand for attractive, green-built homes. This series was inspired by the questions of a number of developers who have contacted me just this past couple of months. I heard from them via Active Rain. Active Rain, thanks for the introduction!.
So this series is all about climbing the stairs to Quality, Longevity & Healthy Living Spaces (see photo to right taken in a green built home with details to follow, the green shoes are mine) It seems that this exercise of "climbing (8 comments)
eco design and development: Planned Residential Communities - 06/10/08 07:31 AM
This past week another developer contacted me through Active Rain. More and more it seems, developers are focusing on the advantages of green/sustainable design and development. These could-be-green developers want to know more than the statistics. They ask about items that are important to their home and land-buying clients - Development Impact Construction Impact Ecosystem and Context Energy and Resource Efficiency Sustainability Healthy-built Features Non-toxic materials Attractiveness and Curb Appeal LEED and/or Other Green Certification (such as the Greater Asheville Area's WNC HealthyBuilt Certification.) So today, I'm starting a series on eco design and development. I'll will take a look at LEEDS® and/or HealthyBuilt® Certified residential eco-communities from (2 comments)
eco design and development: Green-Shaping Asheville with Renewable Resources and "Human Energy" - 05/15/08 10:53 PM
Green-Dreaming? I was reading a newsletter from one of our city commissioners here in Asheville today. She seems to be "dreaming green" and her fans say she is a "light in the community" ... From what I know, she challenges Asheville's citizens to apply some creative "human energy" to look at the city's trajectory. She suggests that we work together to build positive futures. Depending on a variety of lifestyles and choices, solutions to how a city thrives may differ. (Photo of eco consultant and his dog taken at eco community, Hickory Nut Forest near Asheville. )
So, from the perspective of real estate (9 comments)
SCENARIO: Before deciding how to position an infill project for development and sale, as you may recall from Part I of this series, we decided that very savvy planners, on the leading edge of sustainable innovation and design would be called upon to review "the case"...planning professionals, eco-developers, architects, and so forth ... . As I mentioned in Part I of A REALTOR'S® Perspective: The Anatomy, Design & Development of an "Infill Project" ..."Let's do a bit of ‘due diligence' before the fact, (29 comments)
