energy efficiency: An Energy Wise True or False Test - 09/16/08 02:23 PM
An  Energy Wise True or False Test  was delivered with a smile to our client who purchased  a wee rustic cabin in the mountains near Asheville with an energy-efficient mortgage.
Certainly, the place was  in need of updating. The appliances were about as old as the structure itself, which is to say at least as old as your Great-Grandma,  and so our buyer intended to replace them, immediately.
She wanted to know  1) what she could do to find out more about the various appliances on the market, and
2) for what she might be looking . . .

When it comes to being an Eco-Star every home can shine...even an old "castle"...
Simple  changes at home can add up to real benefits for your family, neighborhood and the world.  Here's an ever-expanding list of  things you can do to retrofit or GreenUP an older home  that Sharon Simms  over at the ECO-All-Stars Group  started . Steve Dalton added to it, and that's how the "seed" that Sharon planted began to "sprout".  Soon, John Cilladi, REALTOR, EcoBroker, e-PRO  told us about a  fluorescent light bulb he has had since 1994 that is still going strong after 13 years.  WOW! Is that amazing, or … (78 comments)

energy efficiency: Energy “D-”efficient. What's Your Score? - 02/11/07 04:34 PM

Exactly what makes a home energy efficient? Today I'm biting into that issue.
Check around and you will see that there are change just one bulb in your home campaigns and at least one of your neighbors can tell you about the possibility of preventing global warming from showing up as a mega-disaster for humankind. Our own Andy Wand wrote about The effect of global warming on homeownership. He asks, "If anyone out there is hearing these concerns from prospective buyers (or sellers who have to move because it's gotten too expensive to live where they are), I'd love to hear about it."
 It does … (6 comments)

energy efficiency: 10 Cost and Earth Saving Tips You Can Use in Your Home Today #6-10 - 11/30/06 11:22 PM

Ms. Susie to the right here has style. .  .  .well "style" in the 50s' sense when hula hoops,  poodle skirts, sock hops, and 45s were "groovy".... There was a strong consumer market and people had money to spend. Bought homes. Bought  the  latest  "pink" appliances ...but they weren't  energy efficient. As I said in ECO-Friendly Cost (and Earth) Saving Tips   #1-5       things were different in the 1950s   than they are today. Home buyers weren't concerned about emissions of greenhouse gases  from fossil fuel combustion and the resulting global warming    or the serious  implications for all of us.      But not to fear! You and … (5 comments)

energy efficiency: “How many miles per gallon does this home get?” The Home Energy Rating (HERS) Test. - 10/23/06 08:10 PM
One of my clients was in the market for older homes last year, but she was concerned about how these homes would stack up in terms of their home energy rating. As part of her investigation, she made it a point to discover if a home she might be interested in had a home energy rating. (HERS) Knowing that the home energy rating evaluates and measures the home’s energy characteristics, she could then easily compare the energy costs for the three or four homes she was considering.
A local Asheville company, Home Energy Partners had told my client, “The HERS rating is … (16 comments)

energy efficiency: Remodeling with Light- Then and Now- Oh! The Solar-powered Delight. - 09/24/06 11:28 PM
Remodeling is nothing new. Back in  the mid-1700s Queen Maria of Portugal was into it...on a grand scale.
This portrait, courtesy of Wikipedia , seems to reveal a woman ready to make changes in her home... And indeed, Queen Maria began making sweeping changes in one of her castles  built in the 1600s.  This was to be the royal family's "Country House" and a summer residence.  The palace would be her escape from the burdens of her work and a place where she could relax and enjoy life. It didn't happen overnight, but after many years, her place in the country, AKA "Second/Vacation Home" underwent a … (2 comments)
