sustainable community: Sundays on the Island: Reconnecting with the Land; Meeting the People ~Asheville Area Events Series: Tailgate Markets- The MARSHALL, NC Market. - 01/06/10 11:16 PM

I am looking forward to Sundays on the Island In Madison County, North Carolina  coming soon! It's still cold, so the Farmers' Market is indoors (see flyer and note below.)
But I can hardly wait to find vocal  streams, rolling pastures, welcoming  "coves" and unending vistas that take your breath away as I head out in Spring, 2010 to the  Madison County farmers market (see photos.)
There's a spirit of community here. Camaraderie. Inclusiveness. A sense of place and a sense of belonging, all exemplified  in the weekly tailgate markets. .It is all about Reconnecting with the Land; Meeting the People. Again... Heaven-on-Earth...For those of … (12 comments)

ECO-SENSITIVE EQUITY PRESERVATION IN ASHEVILLE , NORTH CAROLINAThe value-added element of sustainable innovation must be taken into account when considering real property. This is about 2010 and beyond. Too, it is about an investment  that considers social and natural capital.

sustainable community: Locally Grown is GOOD! CSA Farms Where You Live & Here in Asheville , Too - 12/31/08 08:57 AM
We are lucky to have a number of amazing farm stewards and CSA farms here in the Greater Asheville area.
This holiday season, farmer's markets allowed us to buy sustainable, useful gifts such as honey, molasses, jams, jellies, pickles, salad dressings, and herb vinegars and oils directly from the person who made them.
My real estate clients enjoyed thesmall tokens of affection we found for them: "non-edible"  gifts such as soaps, salves, lotions, pottery, baskets, quilts, pot holders, bee's wax candles, brooms, and more local wood and fiber crafts.
There follows a list of links and connections that may be of … (2 comments)

sustainable community: Real Estate 2009- Three Bears -Will It Simply Be the Same-Old-Same-Old Thinking and Planning? - 11/18/08 02:54 PM
Today's Topic: Real Estate 2009- Three Bears -Will It Simply Be the Same-Old-Same-Old  Thinking and  Planning?
Three Bears. 3 Questions. 3 Points. And a Challenge.
Questions:
1.      Does the  same-old-same-old-plan ( possibly adequate in the 1990s)  stand up in the 2.0 real estate environment of 2009 and beyond?
2.      Where are the maps of inquiry that highlight paths to places we need to go?
3.      And can we do better if we don't acknowledge that things are very different than they have been in recent years?

Points:
1.Tough times across the board, in the economy, the environment, education and … (3 comments)

sustainable community: The Power of Just One - 09/01/08 09:35 AM
I am thinking of Grandma today on what would have been her birthday.  Over a hundred years ago, having just graduated from Ypsilanti (Michigan) Teacher's College, my adventurous grandmother took an assignment in a one-room schoolhouse off the coast of Cuba. Sailing from Florida, she traveled by freighter, finally to arrive at her destination,  the Isles of Pines  .
There she joined a group of fellow Americans to lend her services to what today might be understood as an eco-community or eco-village. Ecovillages, according to Wikipedia are " intended to be socially, economically and ecologically sustainable intentional communities. Most aim for a … (13 comments)

Some cool 1031 cats right here in the Asheville, NC real estate investment market can see what's in the picture right away.
Others need to take some time to "take stock" of the whole scene. Today I am writing about 1031-savvy "cats' . . .real estate professionals and investors who fall in both categories.
Have you ever met someone who always seems to have a reference guide in her tote bag, a "compass" if you will...?
For me, that would be "Marie". I long had suspected Marie carried her "compass" in her big black briefcase. A conversation just the other day confirmed it.  … (10 comments)

STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Picture the charm of a graceful Asheville, North Carolina neighborhood in the early nineteen hundreds. It's a Spring day in Asheville, a hundred ago, and you are relaxing on your side porch, sipping a lemonade, and listening to the laughter of children playing in the yard.
Tonight you and the family will "take your constitutional" (walk) over to the nearby Biltmore Estate built just a few years before your own home.  Maybe you'll retrieve your brand new  Model T from the carriage house  and ride there, instead. You just love the spiffy style.

sustainable community: "My REALTOR® Stands TALL in the Field!" (Part I, The Lightning Fast Delivery) - 04/14/07 01:01 AM

What makes an Asheville "green" real estate professional stand out in the crows? My clients tell me it is "authentic communication" on matters of vital interest to them. I got thinking about that, so rrecently I wrote an article about making authentic connections stressing the impact of our role as problem solvers  -e.g.- a client tells you what she needs-   to which you

sustainable community: Trendy Brownfields - 12/18/06 11:41 PM
CHICKEN HILL , 1945AN ASHEVILLE BROWNFIELD SITE,2006
Chicken Hill was a mill village near downtown Asheville, North Carolina, that dates back to the 1880's. Billie Clemmons, who grew up there  recalls, "...We were one big happy family. Poor but it didn't bother us".  For the past half century, however,  since the Historic Asheville, North Carolina  Cotton Mill  closed its doors on "Chicken Hill"  this area was  pretty much  left to its own devices, underutilized due to contamination. It was a Brownfield site.
Recently, the  Regional Brownfields Initiative (RBI) in partnership among Western North Carolina's economic developers, local officials, bankers, environmental planners, REALTORS®, the … (12 comments)
