kids: Why I Love Being a Dad (VIDEO proof) - 10/23/09 10:34 PM
If you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you probably already know that I truly love my kids. Here's a quick and unedited video that I took tonight of our 3-year-old (Abby) and our 6-month old (Jenny). Abby would probably kiss and hug Jenny all day if we allowed it. In fact, my wife calls it "aggressive cuddling". I really like that term. I hope you enjoy this one. I play the part of the camera man/soon-to-be-jungle gym.

kids: A Glimpse Into My Household - Kid Updates - 09/20/09 05:29 PM
I have written many, many posts about my kids here on this blog, but I realized that it had been awhile since my last one, so I thought today was as good a day as any to share some interesting vignettes. At age 10, my son remains exceptionally profound and perceptive. We went for a bike ride a couple of evenings ago. As we crested a hill and stopped for a brief break, we had the following brief conversation about the weather: ME: Wow - you can really see a lot from up here. Check it out! Look at the clouds. BRANDON:

kids: Cute Stuff from our 3-Year Old - 06/27/09 09:27 PM
Abby, our three-year-old daughter, is ridiculously cute. If she had her way, she would spend most of the day cuddling our newborn baby girl, petting and kissing her head. I have had a bunch of people ask me, "Is your toddler jealous?" and I have to laugh, because that has never crossed her mind. Instead, she likes to come up with new nicknames for Jenny (Genevieve), including: Jen Jen or Jenner - kinda obvious Gingerbread - I like this one! Sugar Baby Strawberry - This is my personal favorite Then, she forayed into "just plain odd" nickname territory, with these gems:

kids: My Silly Kids - More Funny Stuff from the Crouch Household - 03/12/09 01:00 AM
It's been awhile since I wrote a post about my kiddos, and I thought it was probably long overdue. This is not a reflection on their antics in any way, as they continue to provide some very funny moments on a regular basis. Instead, I've just been plain busy, and I've had other stuff to talk about, it seems. But I digress... Earlier this evening, I told my wife (again) that I think my son, Brandon, is one of the most naturally funny kids I have met. In other words, he doesn't have to TRY to make us laugh. A prime

kids: My kids continue to astound me and make me laugh - 02/15/09 03:33 PM
I have certainly written a bunch of posts about my children and the funny stuff that they say and do, but I realized it had been awhile since my last "kid" post. Time to change that. We are about eight weeks away from having our fourth child now (!). I don't know if it's related or not, but Abby (our almost-three-year-old) seems to be getting more and more naughty, and finding new and inventive ways to misbehave. Actually, I do know - she's just a two year old kid who is testing her limits. I mentioned to Pam earlier when I

kids: Funniest Christmas-time Quotes from my Kids - 12/25/08 07:35 PM
As I have shared repeatedly here, my kids have a knack for making me laugh. The Christmas season is no different, of course. I just wanted to share a few of the humorous things that they said this year. Abby is two and a half years old now, and she is a natural performer. Several times lately, she has appeared on top of the ottoman in our living room, or perhaps behind the puppet stage upstairs, proclaiming, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WELCOME TO DA SHOW!" When I then ask her to perform, she seems to be out of ideas, but she will sing if prompted

kids: How Many Hours of Re-Runs Must I Have Watched as a Child? - 12/04/08 02:05 PM
Recently, I wrote a post about my kids' bedtime routine, and how I have begun to incorporate stories from my own life into this time with them: Sharing the "Stories of My Life" With my Kids A few nights ago, I was telling them about my own grandfather, who passed away when my son was very little. I told them that Grandpa used to pick me up from school, and feed me dinner while we watched TV together and just sort of hung out. We watched "Gilligan's Island", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Leave it to Beaver", "Father Knows Best", and countless

kids: Sharing the "Stories of My Life" With my Kids - 11/07/08 02:13 PM
Our kids' bedtime routine has long been my domain, as it were. My wife homeschools our three kids, so she doesn't get many breaks. When it's time for bed, I am in charge of getting the two older kids ready, including the tooth brushing, stories, prayers, and tucking them in. Sometimes, it involves keeping them in their rooms, or getting a snack or drink for my daughter, who seems to require less sleep than the rest of us. We had gone through a period when they didn't want me to read to them, but then they suddenly showed renewed interest in having "story time"

kids: My Kids Still Rock! - 10/11/08 07:26 PM
This was a fun week around our house, although I guess most weeks here are pretty fun, come to think of it. My kids continue to amaze me. They make me laugh, they make me cry, and sometimes, they just make me think. Brandon remains one of the most naturally funny kids that I have ever met. Sometimes, it's a little like having a young Bill Murray around the house. In other words, he doesn't have to try very hard to make you crack up. We were riding our bikes the other day as part of our regimen, and Brandon delivered

kids: A Couple of Reasons I Enjoy Being a Dad - 09/08/08 10:37 AM
I have written a good number of posts about my kids and their sense of humor and unique wisdom. Over the past couple of weeks, each of them has had a memorable quote or two that I wanted to share with you. We were watching the 1982 musical "Annie" with the kids the other night. We have this new device that Netflix sells that allows us to select movies online and stream them directly to the TV in our media room. I was browsing for something that we could all watch, and my wife spotted it and thought the kids

kids: Must...get...help. Child...too...cute. - 08/11/08 05:55 PM
The title above refers to an old Dana Carvey routine when his son asks him, "Dad - does God have feet?" We use the phrase "must...get...help" pretty often around our house these days. In fact, we have said it with all three of our kids ever since my son was a baby. Abby continues to be ridiculously cute, with her blond curls and funny vocabulary. She continues to mispronounce "f" as "s": "Daa - here's you cossee". Translation: Dada - here's your coffee. Of course, this is usually accompanied by me frantically leaping from my chair in an effort to keep

kids: Do you ever take your kids to showings? Well, I did it today. - 07/09/08 11:26 PM
My wife was super tired and just generally not feeling well this afternoon. In fact, without getting into details, I will say that the previous statement was a major understatement. She was teetering on the brink of exhaustion. She really needed to rest somehow, yet I had an appointment at 5:30, so I did the only thing I could think to do at that point. I rounded up all three kids and took them with me to my showing. My kids are 9, 7, and 2, so this is no small feat. The older two kids are very easy, but taking a toddler is at

kids: Kid Thoughts - 06/24/08 10:52 PM
I have written a number of times about our two-year old daughter Abby, who is ridiculously cute now. To make matters cuter, she pronounces the letter "f" as an "s" sound, so we get to hear this type of banter each day: "Mama, kitty cat too sussy cute." In the preceding sentence, "sussy" is "fluffy". "Dada, I was you." I have actually shared this phrase here on my blog before - it's Abby's way of saying "I love you." "Dada, make a sunny sace." You can probably decode this one by now. She likes to see "sours" (flowers), "goggies" (doggies), and "sroggies"

kids: My son is a profound thinker - 06/13/08 02:00 PM
On the eve of Father's Day weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to share some experiences that I've had with my son lately. I have been cycling with my nine year old son Brandon pretty much every evening lately. We go for a ride that is slightly over 5 miles, which still amazes me considering that he just learned to ride about a month and a half ago. We both have more energy, and we often follow this with some swimming at our community pool. During our time together, sometimes he gets quiet and I'll ask him what

kids: Another episode of "Those Wacky Crouches"! - 03/18/08 08:53 PM
This past Sunday, after church, I was talking with a friend of mine for awhile, and my wife and kids were at the church playground. My wife later related a brief story to me that I thought was hysterical and I wanted to share it here. My son, who is barely nine, is a very big kid (just over 5 feet tall, wearing a men's size 9 shoe), but he is still really just a little boy inside. His little sisters were playing on the playground, and he was pestering me a little bit because he was bored and hungry. Since I wasn't ready

kids: Someday, I will look back on all of this and laugh. On second thought, why not just laugh now? - 02/17/08 03:35 PM
My children continue to amaze me every day with their intelligence and humor. I wanted to share a few recent things that occurred in my house that made me realize that my kids are both witty and smart. We had lunch today after church at Serrano's, which is a Mexican restaurant which has always had consistently good food and service, at a reasonable price. My son ordered the grilled cheese with fries, but when our waiter brought this dish out, there was a pile of lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes on the plate next to the sandwich itself. You must understand that vegetables

kids: My Two Daughters - 02/10/08 10:44 PM
I love the fact that I am able to spend so much time with my kids. Since I work from home most days, I get to see them far more often than most of my friends do. Our toddler is changing quickly from a baby to a little girl, and my six-year old will soon be seven. Recently, our toddler Abby has discovered a method to get what she wants that is very effective. She will ask to be picked up, usually by saying, "Pick up my Abby." When you pick her up, she will cradle your face in her little hands and

kids: My funny and intriguing son - 01/27/08 11:50 PM
My nine-year old son, Brandon, is one of the most interesting and witty kids that I have encountered. Sometimes, he says things while joking around with us that make my wife Pam and I double over in laughter. Other times, he is able to do this unintentionally. Over the past few weeks since his birthday (mid-December), he has had a few moments that I thought were worth documenting here. The other day, Pam asked Brandon to help get some cereal for his little sister. He prepared the bowl, and Pam remarked, "That's great, Br.." when she was interrupted sharply by Brandon: "Well,

kids: More Kid Fun at Our House - My Toddler is a "Monk" Fan Now - 01/22/08 06:45 PM
My children continue to provide a source of entertainment and joy in my life. I feel blessed beyond measure to be their dad. Recently, our toddler, Abby, who will 22 months old soon, has coined a few new phrases that I find funny. "I want pick up my Abby". This is self-explanatory, I suppose, and she is really just mimicking what we say ("I'm gonna pick up my Abby.") "We wow." = "Right now", as in "I want carry Abby we wow." or "I want to see Dora we wow." Lately, I have noticed an interesting new trend. I am a fan of

kids: More Quotes from My Children - 01/12/08 10:59 AM
My children continue to amaze and humor me each day. I wanted to share a few choice sayings here. I will work my way from my oldest to youngest this time. My son, who is nine, is a musical genius (not really exaggerating). He has absolute pitch (a.k.a. "perfect pitch") and he can pick out tunes on the piano by ear. Although I can carry a tune, I have NO musical talent, so I am always a bit astonished by his abilities in this arena. The other day, we had some beautiful weather (mid-70's, a little breezy, sunny), and he was happy
