music: Transported by Song - My Freshman Year of College - 09/02/08 11:54 AM
I realized a few days ago how long it had been since I wrote a post strictly for fun, much like this one that I was challenged to write by Paul Slaybaugh back in November: He Just Smiled and Gave Me a Vegemite Sandwich This one is along the lines of the post I wrote about meeting my wife: Songs from the Night I Met My Wife - A Tribute And this one about the summer of that same year: 1988 - Memories and Music I realize this post is long, but these are memories, people! I attended Southwestern

music: Why do I have so much trouble with song lyrics? More about my "lazy ear syndrome" - 02/20/08 09:51 AM
I was 9 years old when I started listening to the Beatles. My mom bought me some of their albums, and others I purchased with lawn-mowing money. I would study the lyrics as I played the records over and over again, since precision was important to me for some reason. Even difficult and intricate lyrics like this one from "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" remain a part of my memory vault: Picture yourself on a train in a station,With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,The girl with kaleidoscope eyes... As a side note, yes, this song is

music: Transported by Song - A Look Back on My Collection of Records from 1977-1978 - 12/21/07 09:16 PM
In honor of our recently formed group Inspired by Song!, I wanted to talk about a few songs that will literally transport me in time whenever I hear them. A couple of these could also be considered guilty pleasures, but they really are a part of my personal history. When I was a kid, I used to spend hours in my room listening to music. I had stacks of 45's that I enjoyed. Has it been 30 years already? I was an only child, so I had a lot of "alone time" and my mom would usually indulge me when it came

music: My Guilty Music Pleasures - 12/01/07 04:02 PM
As of this writing, there are 59,865 members here at Active Rain. To give you a sense of how many people that represents, the Indianapolis Colts' RCA Dome stadium holds 60,272 ticket holders. With that in mind, this post is sort of like stepping out to the middle of the field to proclaim my love for certain music that can definitely be considered...questionable. I don't know how many AR members actively read, post and comment here, but the potential exists for roughly 60,000 people to shun me after they read this one. If you haven't already seen it in my blog or

music: Do You Believe in Love? Summer of 1984 - 11/07/07 02:36 PM
All of the names in this story have been changed to protect those who don't know about this blog, and who will probably never read it anyway. It was the summer of 1984, and I was almost 14 years old. We had gathered at my good friend David's house for a pool party. The attendees had all graduated from the same private elementary school in Dallas in 1982, so this was a reunion of sorts. My friend's house had a terrific pool, and I remember helping him there a couple of years prior as he was testing for various Cub Scout

music: 1988 - Memories and Music - 10/31/07 09:46 PM
I am approaching my 15-year college reunion, which means I have been out of high school nearly 20 years now. I graduated in 1988, which sometimes seems like a long time ago, and other times seems very near in my memory. My final semester of high school, we went on a ski trip and one of my fondest memories was of re-enacting "Hanz and Franz" Pump You Up from SNL with my friends. We all had nicknames for this - Hanz, Franz, Mueller, LeManz, etc. Good, clean, goofy fun. During that trip, I played the most successful practical joke that I
