social media: ALERT: Google and Facebook are NOT Locked in Epic Battle to the Death! - 01/12/11 12:56 PM
Sorry for the dramatic headline, but I figured it might not hurt to use the same tactic that I’ve seen others employ with regard to my email inbox. I guess I’m just getting a bit tired of hearing self-proclaimed gurus and experts say things like, “SEO is dead” or “Facebook KO’s Google” or anything similar. The fact that YouTube receives more searches than Google, or Facebook has more traffic than Google, doesn’t mean that Google is harmed by this or going away anytime soon. Google actually owns YouTube, in case you didn’t already know that part. Yes, I agree that

social media: Making it Count – Using Online Tools More Effectively - 01/10/11 10:42 AM
Earlier today, my friend Sally Cheeseman shared a photo of her father that looked like it was probably taken in the 1940′s. I showed my wife, and we talked about what a cool picture it was. It made him look like a bomber pilot, maybe one from an old war movie. Then, I reflected on the fact that although Sally lives in Hawaii, and I’m in Austin, Texas, it was almost as if I were sitting next to her looking at a family scrapbook. Social media is amazing. Technology has come so far so fast that sometimes I think it’s easy to forget

social media: Are you the Barney Fife of Social Media? - 12/22/10 11:28 PM
When I was a kid, my grandfather would pick me up from school most days, and we would hang out all afternoon until my mom came to pick me up from his house. He would usually make me some macaroni and cheese, or some (rather amazing) home-style fries. While we were together, we’d watch TV, typically old shows that were in syndication, like “Gilligan’s Island”, or “Father Knows Best”. One of my favorites was “The Andy Griffith Show”, and I can still whistle the theme song pretty well, truth be told. In case you’re not already familiar with the characters, Barney Fife was

social media: "I Hate Social Media" - 11/06/10 10:17 AM
I heard the quote in the title above recently from a friend of mine over dinner, and it surprised me. As someone who loves this stuff, I was intrigued by this statement, and I asked my friend, “Why is that?” His answer was simple. He said that he didn’t care about keeping up with people from high school on Facebook, or about what’s going on in their lives. He mentioned that it seemed false to him. This response made it abundantly clear that he didn’t understand what social media really encompasses. Sadly, this is a not uncommon reaction to this still-somewhat-fledgling

social media: Using Social Media To Enhance Face-to-Face Meetings (I Promise It Works!) - 09/24/10 11:52 AM
For the past couple of years, I’ve been helping others to market effectively online, having done this for my own businesses since 1996. One of the interesting trends I’ve noted is the fact that some people (and companies) spend a lot of time and effort working on their online presence, at the expense of “real world” interaction. Social media (or “new media”, if you prefer) tools and platforms aren’t intended to supplant face-to-face interaction and networking, but to ENHANCE them. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. Perhaps you really don’t want to meet and engage in a personal

social media: Eavesdropping on Your Clients (and Potential Clients) - A Couple of Tools to Help - 05/20/10 12:17 AM
It seems that just about every decent restaurant these days has a “receipt survey” in place. You know the kind I’m talking about, right? When I’m trying to pay for my meal, I get a long receipt with a code highlighted near the bottom. It’s always a little awkward when the server says, “Visit our site and use this code and you will be entered into a drawing to win something useless to you.” Okay. I know they don’t really say that, but that’s what I hear. What are the exceptions for me, if any? What would cause me to actually

social media: I Interviewed One of My Very Favorite Guests Today on Social Media Edge - Shane Gibson - 01/19/10 10:40 PM
I wanted to spread the word a little bit about today's Social Media Edge episode, since our guest brought some of the very best social media information that I have heard in 14 months of hosting the show. If you only hear one interview from us, I would suggest this one if you have some time. Shane Gibson is the co-author of "Sociable", a brand-new book for salespeople who want to convert social media time into real-world dollars. His philosophies and the actionable strategies he shared made me buy a copy of his book today. You can see more about the book

social media: I Launched My New Blog Tonight! Come Check it Out! - 01/11/10 11:36 PM
After several months of planning, I am very pleased to announce that I have launched a new blog. Not too long ago, I asked for help from my friends here to see what domain I should try to acquire for this. After much deliberation, I settled on JBCMedia.com. There were tons of good suggestions, but I thought this one left room for several different types of future projects. As I had indicated in the previous post about the new blog, this new platform will be a place for me to share thoughts about business, new/social media, marketing and more. In case

social media: Adventures in the Creek: Making the most of your social media efforts - 11/12/09 09:49 PM
When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents' house. They lived nearby, and I later realized what a blessing this was for me, since I really got to know them. When I was over there, I had a different set of friends from my own house. They were a little rougher around the edges than the kids in my own neighborhood, frankly. Rather than delving into stories about them (and believe me, there are stories), I wanted to talk a bit about one of our favorite activities when I was 10-12 years old:

social media: I have over 10,000 Twitter followers now - What does this really mean? - 10/24/09 09:36 PM
I remember getting invited to check out Twitter about 2 years ago. Next, I remember thinking that it seemed useless. Months passed....I got emails that said things like, "@delicioushair is now following you on Twitter". WHAT?!? Why? The notion of someone following me used to strike me as both odd and off-putting. I guess it sounds catchier than saying that someone is "paying attention to you on Twitter", but that's basically exactly what this means. I prefer to think of my subscribers, friends, contacts, and followers as part of my online audience. The better you are at building an audience, the

social media: Do you have a screenwriter? Why not hire a director as well? Avoiding unwanted social media advice - 06/24/09 11:08 PM
I don't profess to be a technology or social media guru, but I will say that I have been immersed in this stuff for a couple of years, so I certainly have developed my own set of opinions on what works and what doesn't. That being said, one of the worst pieces of advice that I have witnessed is something along these lines: "Don't blog about your personal life." or "Don't tweet about your boring day. No one cares!" And so on. I utterly disagree with those statements above. If people care about YOU, then they will likely care about what is

social media: "I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now!" - How ActiveRain helped get me published in Texas Realtor Magazine - 05/27/09 10:50 PM
The line above comes from Steve Martin's character Navin Johnson in the 1979 classic comedy "The Jerk", which is one of my all-time favorite movies, and it pretty well sums up my own feelings when the latest issue of Texas Realtor magazine arrived at my office. If you're not familiar with this scene, Navin gets really excited when the new phone books arrive as the gas station where he works: Navin R. Johnson : The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! Harry Hartounian : Boy, I wish I could get that excited about nothing. Navin R. Johnson :

social media: Learn & Laugh Every Week on Social Media Edge Radio! - 05/23/09 01:13 PM
In case you don't normally read my blog, Ken Cook and I have been hosting a one-hour online radio show every Tuesday for the past six months. We recently decided to change the name of the show from "Twitter Tuesday" to "Social Media Edge", since many of our friends thought we were talking exclusively about Twitter. We broadcast live at 11am Central (noon Eastern, 10am Mountain, 9am Pacific) here: http://budurl.com/jckc We generally have a guest or two each time, and we talk about various social media topics and using them to grow your business. Sometimes, we just riff on each other and use

social media: Lessons from the trenches - Strong Week of Sales Makes Me Reflective - 05/11/09 08:59 AM
This was one of my strongest sales weeks in quite awhile, since I managed to get three new contracts in place with three separate buyer clients. I remember when I was starting out in real estate back in 1997, and one of the owners of the company I worked for mentioned that he had spoken with a top producer who said: "Keep working at this business. Over time, the clients will begin to fall in your lap from various places - friends, past clients, your current marketing. It all pays off at some point." These were (and remain) wise words. Obviously,

social media: I am writing TWO offers today! (Pssst! One of them even came from Localism) - 03/25/09 03:27 PM
Thankfully, this month has been a whirlwind activity with my buyer clients, and I also managed to get my last listing sold in the meantime (guess I need to get some more!). Today, for the first time in (mumble mumble) months/years, I will be writing two offers, and I just had a closing two days ago as well. Things have picked up mightily in March for us, and I am hopeful that it will carry into the summer and fall months ahead. Rather than focusing strictly on the good stuff that has happened for me this month, I wanted this

social media: How I Managed to Recruit Agents from ActiveRain, Twitter, AND Facebook! - 02/13/09 01:42 PM
Last week, I realized that I have managed to attract agents to our company from each of my personal top three social networking sites (AR, Twitter, and Facebook). I have found that agents who are already embracing social media have some of the best potential around. SO, HOW DID I FIND THEM? I guess the quickest answer is to say that most of them found me. Two of my current agents, Christi Baylor and Marisa Ladd, came from my blog right here on ActiveRain. They were already AR members before we met, which made our "in person" connection that

social media: I will be teaching a class on "Social Media 101" in February - 01/31/09 10:49 PM
As part of my ongoing effort to push myself outside of my comfort zone, I will be teaching a class on "Social Media 101" at Gracy Title's Spicewood Springs office on February 18th from 2-3pm. I arranged for an SEO class to be taught just before mine by Ben Finklea, CEO of Volacci Search Marketing. (I stole the header above from my friend's email invite for the event.) The cost to attend will be $25 for one class, or $35 for both. If things go well, I may work toward getting a class approved for MCE credit (perhaps "Online Real Estate

social media: How My ActiveRain Efforts Have Brought Additional Exposure! - 01/23/09 05:37 AM
I could easily write several posts on this topic, but since I've had so many different opportunities this past month that have arisen from my blogging lately, I decided to write a post about all of them at once. And yes, that is a picture of my actual thumb! REALTOR MAGAZINE I received a call from a reporter with Realtor Magazine late last month. She had seen this post of mine: How to Properly Leave a Brokerage - Am I wrong to expect a call?. She wanted to talk about my experience in two areas: agents who leave, and letting agents

social media: So, you wanna be a social media and online marketing guru? Here's one way to learn how! - 12/02/08 08:06 PM
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post that garnered quite a bit of attention: Are YOU a part of the revolution? If not, be prepared to be left behind by those who are. In a way, this was meant to be a manifesto of sorts, in order to encourage two distinct groups of people: Brand-new members here on ActiveRain Anyone who happened to read it who had not already grasped the importance of social media/marketing yet With that in mind, starting this Friday, you have an opportunity to be part of a very thorough 12-week webinar series via Domus

social media: My first webinar (as a teacher) was a cool experience! Social Networking & Blogging 101 - 11/22/08 05:00 PM
My SEO company invited me to conduct a webinar yesterday for their clients about blogging and social media/social networking. Overall, it went really well! I wasn't nervous at all until about two minutes before we went "live", but it passed quickly. This was a Social Networking and Blogging 101 class, basically to get newbies to understand the value of using both of these as business tools, and where and how to take the first steps. Since it was my first attempt at conducting a "live" webinar, I didn't promote it at all, and none of their customers for this one were
