air filter: It's Important To Treat Both Sides Of The Furnace Filter Issue - 08/20/11 06:09 AM
The furnace filter (why don't we call it the AC filter?) is a very important part of the HVAC system!  Don't minimize its importance!  And it's important to treat both sides of the furnace filter issue.
The filter does not really filter the air in the house.  Its intention is to filter the air before it gets to the furnace to keep it, and all the associated mechanisms, like the blower, clean.
In this house, just to the right of the unit, is one of the two return-air grills in the house.

air filter: Get To Know Your Air Flow - 08/20/10 04:59 PM
It is probably true that on half the home inspections I do the filter is installed backwards.  It is important that the filter be installed the right way!  Why?  Because one side is stronger and meant to handle the air flow's pressure.  There is an arrow drawn on every filter to tell you the air flow direction.  Put in backwards, and as it gets loaded with dust, the filter can literally get sucked into the system and even cause damage to the fan.

air filter: Free Furnace Fun Facts - 11/18/08 05:04 AM
This time of year the furnace becomes a very important appliance.  Checked it recently?  What kind do you have - gas, oil or electric?  Do you have an annual service contract?  Do you need one?  Replaced or cleaned the filter recently?  Can you even get to your furnace?
A gas or oil furnace or boiler needs an annual tune up, particularly if it is older than 5 years.  Newer units are more efficient than older ones.  The new code requires a more efficient system, so if you are thinking of replacing your system you should understand that.  The old code required … (4 comments)
